The recent death of the former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher caused complicated feelings in a lot of Brits. Thatcher may have been a transformative public figure in her time, but in her arch-conservative policies, her embrace of militarism and privatization, she's been widely reviled in much of the UK for decades. But Stephen Patrick Morrissey is one Brit whose feelings are decidedly uncomplicated. In a recent statement about Thatcher, Morrissey got bitchily erudite in the way that only he can, proving that he hates Thatcher in death just as much as he hated her in life. And [...]
Car fanatics were none-too-thrilled with the lyric video for Vampire Weekend's " Diane Young " and its Saab-arson visuals. As per autoblog Jalopnik, in a post called " Vampire Weekend Are A Bunch Of Dicks ," the clip struck a nerve with the towing company that supplied the vehicles: Ready for a Saab story? These two cars will be lit on fire in a music video on Saturday. The previous owners I picked them up from were telling me all of the nice times they had in them and to make sure to take care [...]

Amidst all the news and conjecture about Lil Wayne's health, another major rap story is exploding tonight. Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka Flame - friends, frequent collaborators for years, and partners in the 1017 Brick Squad crew - are apparently embarking on what could be a bitter feud. Read More...
Brooklyn dream-poppers DIIV are among the many, many buzzed-about bands playing about 52 shows apiece in Austin this week for SXSW. And they're probably not the only ones who aren't happy about this experience. They are, however, probably the most prominent band to come out publicly this year and say how much they hate it, while it's still going on. Here's what frontman Zachary Cole Smith posted on Tumblr: Read More...
At this point, all the people Azealia Banks has Twitter-feuded with over the past few months should just band together, record a "We Are The World"-style song about the experience, and then just be done with it. Banks's latest target is an unexpected one: Reunited Madchester legends the Stone Roses, who, according to Banks, attempted to sabotage her set at Australia's Future Music Festival by loading in behind her. Every year, MTV sends a whole bunch of A-list rappers into paroxysms of rage when it reveals its Hottest MCs In The Game list . The list hasn't even been completely unveiled yet, but rappers are already getting heated about their placement - so much so that one Kanye West, #7 on the list, offered a rare, cryptic public comment on the thing. Kanye recently called Hot 972s DJ Enuff to discuss the ranking: "What happens with these type of judges and people who are viewers, when you come in, I had the pink Polo and the backpack, then [...]
James Murphy isn't losing his edge, he's losing money - a reported $93,899 - by way of his absent business partner and DFA Records co-founder Tim Goldsworthy, who was compensated for unperformed work. On Friday, Murphy filed a lawsuit with the Manhattan Civil Supreme Court for "breach of contract" and "unjust enrichment." It's also been reported that Goldsworthy was using DFA's money for non-business reasons, including improper use of credit cards and cash in their bank account. CoS has pointed to an interview with label manager Johnathan Galkin where he explains that three years [...]
Beautiful creatures died deaths for no reason , and then were served at the Staples Center last night :( After a lengthy and confusing back-and-forth between Morrissey and the Staples Center regarding whether or not Moz's L.A. show last night would be 100% vegetarian, the venue ultimately could not bring itself to stand against animal suffering entirely, even for a just a few hours. According to tweets from concert-goers, meat was sold at the Staples Center. However, there were many victories for the animals as well: Morrissey did manage to successfully shut down the Staples [...]
Be straight with me: Is Morrissey okay? Like, is there some method to his madness? Is he just having a laugh here? Is he getting back at us for repeatedly inquiring about the possibility of a Smiths reunion even though he's made it perfectly clear that's not happening ? Because I'm starting to wonder about the frequency and content of his cultural contributions these days! Claire thinks he should do a song with Kanye, and frankly, that may be the only thing that even makes sense at this point. What now, you ask? More like, what not [...]
There's an old bit of rock apocrypha - since refuted - that goes a little something like this: On the eve of the two-and-a-half-year Use Your Illusion tour in 1991, Axl Rose gathered the other members of Guns N' Roses, and threatened to quit the band if they didn't sign over to him all rights to the GNR name ... which, of course, they were forced to do, lest they lose everything altogether. Let's assume for a second that's stone-cold fact: That tour may have - arguably! - kicked off with more [...]
Seven hours ago, a status update on Morrissey's Facebook page announced the singer's return to live performance following a bout with illness , saying: Morrissey will resume his North American tour with a performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live Tuesday, February 26 followed by a 27-city tour with newly added cities. This was followed about one hour ago with another update , revising the previous one: Read More...
Oh, it's ON. Where's the beef, you ask? Not at the Staples Center , says Moz. After releasing an initial statement announcing that the L.A. venue was going vegetarian for his 3/1 gig, only to be gently corrected by Staples Center reps who announced that no such arrangement was in place (All a big misunderstanding! Veggie tacos will, however, be served!), Morrissey has drawn the goddamn line: NOT IN MY HOUSE. (Which is in this case not his house at all, which, you know, whatever.) Per Moz-focused blog True To You , the singer [...]
Stop the presses y'all, there is a mega update in regards to the Twitter drama between Justin Bieber and Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney! His initials might be "PC," but his Twitter feed sure is not today. Read More...
Azealia Banks and "Harlem Shake" producer Baauer are in a bit of a to-do over Banks's remix of the song. Yesterday she posted her own version on SoundCloud, which Baauer had swiftly removed, prompting her to ask why he was " coccblocking ." Baauer's reply - " cause its not ur song lol " - set Banks completely off the rails and she proceeded to call him a "faggot" and a "pussy," suggesting he and his dance music cronies " grab each others dicks in a circle jerk " and that they should " drown in faggotry ." [...]
Rap has reached into weird directions when entire rap feuds can flare up and die down literally overnight. Here's the history on this one: Last year, on Joey Bada$$'s breakout single " Survival Tactics ," Joey's Pro Era collaborator Capital Steez, who has since taken his own life, had one stray line about Lil B: "They say hard work pays off / Well, tell the Based God don't quit his day job." Lil B let that one go, possibly because he never heard the song. But the day before yesterday, Bada$$ tweeted the line at Lil B, and [...]

Chris Brown and Frank Ocean got into it on Sunday night at Westlake Studio in Los Angeles, allegedly over a parking space. I'm going to go ahead and assume that this has been brewing for a little while, since the two have already been at odds before. Last June, Brown tweeted that he was into Ocean's music and that it reminded him of James Fauntleroy, a songwriter for many R&B acts, including Brown's ex/possibly current girlfriend Rihanna. I don't know why that irked Ocean, it's possible it was because of a past fracas between Brown and Tyler, the Creator, or [...]
Last month, the Queens rapper Meyhem Lauren released his thundering, funny-as-hell Mandatory Brunch Meetings mixtape, and I liked it a lot. Pitchfork did not agree. Earlier this week, critic Jonah Bromwich dropped a 5.2 on it and called it mediocre and lacking in personality. Lauren, evidently tremendously frustrated, immediately recorded a song refuting the reviews different points and generally blasting the shit out of the site. As a former Pitchfork writer, a song like this would've once made me all defensive, but now it's just funny: "A pitchfork's a devilish tool! We [...]
There was no fan on the flames of the battle between Harlem spit-fire Azealia Banks and NYC-via-Virginia rapper Angel Haze over the weekend. On Friday, Banks and frequent collaborator Machinedrum dropped "No Problems," a response track to Haze's "On The Edge." While the spat has primarily been relegated to Twitter and SoundCloud — Haze followed up with a super straightforward cut called "Shut The Fuck Up" — and solely between the two of them, it was not long before others got involved. This is where it gets prickly. Celeb gossip jabberjaw Perez Hilton, a former avid fan of [...]

Well, that escalated quickly. I mean, that really got out of hand. Angel Haze and Azealia Banks, two very good rappers who seem to have a lot in common, started out today by going at each other's necks on Twitter. (Read the whole exchange here .) And already Angel Haze has fired off the first on-wax attack, delivering the double-time bloodthirsty dis track "On The Edge." If nothing else, it shows that Angel Haze is an absolutely ridiculous monster of a rapper. I do not expect Azealia to let this one slide, so look for this to continue. In [...]
Argue all you like about the quality of music produced in 2012, but no one can deny the truly outstanding beefs to which we bore witness in The Year That Was. Social media has made those dust-ups easier and more immediate, of course; 40 percent of our 10 Biggest Band Beefs Of 2012 started or built steam on Twitter and/or Facebook. (That percentage would be at an even half if either blogs or online poker-discussion forums were considered "social media.") The other half started either in traditional media or in real life - as it happens, both IRL confrontations included [...]
