Everyone who has been to LA recently knows that spaces for independent music and art is scarce these days. So with summer rolling around, amazing creative forces in this city start looking elsewhere to find appropriate venues for creating things that push past our cities limits. Restavrant - Nadia First off, this weekend is Escape to Ojai; an all ages night of coziness at the Deer Lodge. For those of you that have never been to the Deer Lodge or Ojai, you deserve this trip. W-H-I-T-E - Fountain With FMLY FEST just around the corner, I thought we could all get a little more familiar with who we will be jamming out with this December. Corey Hansen, a LA transplant in New York, plays under the moniker W-H-I-T-E . Haunting and swirling drenched with heavy cathedral organs and perfectly layered vocals, chugging beats will keep you dancing while the rest keeps you floating. It's albums like "Twin Tigers" completely blow me away with what one person can do. Check out the interview with him on Sean Carnage 's [...]

This show is a dream come true. Nude Sunrise, the sexiest kraut-sludge band from Chicago is touring with the eternally touring DIY pot head homies, White Fang. They asked me to book them a show so obviously I had to oblige. So whats going down? Five of the gnarliest rock n roll bands in the country are going head to head round robin style at The Cat Nap on October 14th. If you're in LA prepare yourself for a battle royale of truly epic proportions. If not, check these bands out and buy or [...]

We want to bring together everyone who is doing positive work in LA to one place, so if you want to be involved, please email fmlyfest@thefmly.com . This festival is for EVERYONE, but it's not possible without your support. We are fundraising for the fest [...]

Recently, Shannon and I moved into our new residence at the Broom Factory in South Los Angeles. I love it here for so many reasons but the biggest is that people actually talk to you on the streets. How unusual for this city! On top of that, there is always something awesome happening in Liemert Park where it be Bananas at Kaos Network , the artwalk, a cultural festival, or just the drum circle. As a sort of celebration of our new settling, we had a dinner and a show with Candy Claws , Steffaloo [...]

It's coming up again; That magical day in LA where they shut down streets in LA for people to take over. Biking, walking, snorking and much more. This time the route has expanded to include Chinatown and part of South LA,but that's not all! CicLAvia is offering $500 mini-grants to people who want to help make CicLAvia super awesome. These grants can be for a site specific installation, a march, a hula hoop troop, or whatever else you can think of. The submission proposal only has to be a page so it shouldn't take to long to [...]

The war isn't just overseas... The Interrupters is a movie that follows the violence of gangs for one year in Chicago and explores the question, how can we co-exist without violence. It's won all sorts of festivals and it doesn't surprise me at all since Shannon and I were both in tears before the end of the trailer. I can't wait to see this movie.

I know that LA has a long and storied DIY history, but I have a hard time imagining it without Sean Carnage . He was already well established as a promoter when I played my first Sean Carnage Monday at Il Corral, and that was 4 1/2 years ago. Since then, Sean has become a hero for the weird and experimental in Los Angeles. Many of the bands he's championed at his shows, which are now hosted at Pehrspace, have gone on to bigger and brighter things. More importantly, a community has coalesced around Mondays [...]

Fun Fun Fun Fest just did their second round of leaks. The leaks are within the video but require a certain amount of nautical flag knowledge. This is a follow up to the first round of leaks which included Okkervil River, M83, Odd Future and X. Truthfully, I'm really not a fan of festivals but something about the amount of FUN that goes into this just seems right. The second wave of tickets go on sale tonight so work quick on figuring out those new leaked bands! Hit the jump for a recap from last years [...]

[ Hausu - Makiadi ] Hausu is a band from the Pacific Northwest that is currently on tour throughout the West Coast. Their song "Makiadi" features a cool blend of sinister, swallowed baritone and shimmery, early-REM style arpeggiated guitars. They remind me a bit of Orange Juice. You can download a couple of other songs by them over at their website , which also features their tour itinerary. I asked the band to share a few things that inspired them, as I do, and got some pretty interesting responses. Click the link to see. [...]

So Many Wizards - Inner City If you've lived and driven in LA for any considerable time, you're familiar with the carpool lane interchange between the Southbound 110 and the Westbound 105. If you're not terrified of heights or earthquakes, it's one of the best drives in LA - for about a minute, it separates from the rest of the freeway and points drivers straight towards the sky. It was here that I first heard So Many Wizards. Their song "Fly a Kite" came on KXLU right as I made my ascent, and the [...]
