As well as our Top 100 tunes of the year posts over the past five days, each of the MM contributors have put together their own lists. It is the turn of Dr Roddy... This years music has been a many varied kaleidoscope of sounds, moods and timing. I have moved house, set up home with my girlfriend and found myself a new job. Because music is my coping method all of these things have found themselves with their own soundtrack. When I looked back over my playlists of the year all of these songs feature in them [...]
If you've seen Josh Ritter, Ireland's darling, live in concert, then you know that the guy is smiling constantly. I'm talking every show, the whole show. And it's not annoying, it's contagious. Ritter fans are the best fans to be surrounded by for a few hours of music. On his brand new single "Why", the veteran singer-songwriter rhetoricall y wonders [...]

Yoni Wolf's WHY? is the sort of band that inspires fanatic devotion from some and disgust from others. At the very least, WHY? is a completely original act, and although the band draws on dozens of musical tropes (from Bob Dylan to MC Shan to the Strokes to the Wu-Tang Clan to Radiohead) to make their statement, they never sound really like anyone except themselves. Yoni's voice is perhaps the most distinctive feature of the band in more than one sense; he's the auteur, the nasal-voiced Stanley Kubrick of folk-hop. It's not as cloying [...]

Hello reader. Once more into the abyss I write, only this Friday it’s been long hand – not quite quill and parchment but getting there. Big Mac has choked, nearly croaked and lies in a critical condition waiting for restorative palliative care from Uncle Mike. Not that he’s my uncle you understand, but we are related and he’s particularly avuncular when it comes to ‘puters. Fingers crossed. Sadly I fear there’s no such cure for my lyrical affliction, which particularly comes to the fore when doing the day job as a charity copywriter. Some people spot it and [...]

Here's one more for everyone on this Monday-ish feeling Thursday, this time from the Berkley, California alternative hip-hop act Why? Originally a solo project of frontman/lyrical-mastermind Yoni Wolf, Why? evolved into a full band prior to the release of their most recent album Eskimo Snow (released on September 22nd of this year); Even the Good Wood Gone can be found in the highly formidable position of fourth song on said album. Fans of Why? will likely recognize a distinct shift in the band's sound on Eskimo Snow. Where one would expect a strong hip-hop beat, similar [...]
