The cosy underground club Alhambra was the perfect venue for the mind fuzzing dream-pop tunes of Wild Nothing. They took to stage amidst the crowd of young, shoegaze loving fans. This was the band's first performance in Australia and they began their tour spectacularly. A warm vibration filled the room as frontman Jack Tatum led the five-piece band into tracks from both his first album, Gemini and the 2012 release Nocturne . As a band that began from one teenager’s musical tinkering on his college computer, Wild Nothing have really come into their own. With [...]

Similar to our weekly collection of MP3s , we decided to start ranking each week's best videos. So, from here on out, our favorite weekly videos will be ordered in quality from 10-1. Who reigns champ this week? Grab some popcorn, sit back, and find out. 10. The xx – “I Miss You” (Beyonce Cover) Turns out everybody has Beyoncé on the mind. The clip is standard fair for a live in studio video, but the energy and looks exchanged between Romy Croft and Oliver Sim perfectly encapsulate what makes [...]

Here we are, on the cusp of our 100 Best Songs of 2012; a four-part series of only the best and top songs from 2012. After a busy year here ...
2012...what a year of music. We got new releases from favorites such as Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors, Grizzly Bear and heard new favorites in Father John Misty, Nude Beach, Tanlines, and more. Last year Earbuddy celebrated one year of existence with the best 50 albums of 2011 . However, we've grown since [...]
Our year end lists are wrapping up at this point, but we wouldn't be a legitimate music site without a list of the top songs from 2012. Personally, I feel like this list is a thousand times more difficult to compose than an albums list because we're dealing with close to 400-500 songs in the running. It's been a long process trying to narrow that iTunes playlist down to 100, and I know some incredible tunes from this year are missing, but we hope you enjoy. Ladies and gentlemen, follow the jump for the ATH version of top 2012 songs. [...]
Our year end coverage begins with the three chiefs over at the ATH offices reveling in what was an incredible year in Austin, musically speaking. Tons of rad bands blew us away with their live sets, and, well, there were just tons of bands. I think we did more show coverage this year than in previous years, but as always, the great thing about our site is diversity. We're also linking back to our full reviews and photos of some of these nights, so you can get more of a feel of our thoughts, not to mention, checking out Brian's [...]

Lad mig fortælle dig en personlig historie. En historie om genfunden kærlighed. For næsten fire år siden faldt jeg tilfældigt over en demo fra et lille, ukendt band fra byen Oxford i staten Mississippi i USA. Demoen indeholdte tre sange. " Catapilah ", " Liars " og " Three Deep ." Det blev starten på et forhåbentlig langt bekendtskab med Jim Barrett og Ben Yarbrough og deres band, Young Buffalo . Et band som dengang havde to erklærede mål. At lave god musik og undgå at opføre [...]

“A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men.” -Willy Wonka A Place To Bury Strangers – "And I’m Up" At last, a music video for 13-year-old boys and their love of wanton property damage. The one thing missing? Pictures of Megan Fox. Paul Banks – “Young Again” As it turns out, elementary school is just as bad the second time around. Why did you lie to us, Billy Madison?! Action Bronson – "The Symbol" [...]

“The smog was heavy, my eyes were weeping from it, the sun was hot, the air stank, a regular hell is L.A.” -Jack Kerouac, The Dharma Bums Hours later, I'm still sneezing dust. Bits of dirt remain caked on my scalp. My feet scream and ache from the loose pebbles or jagged shards of mulch that crept into my shoes all weekend. Skin's on fire, eyes feel dull, and head is weak - they don't make it easy in Los Angeles, CA. Since 2004, Sean Carlson has hosted the "best weekend [...]

"Proof that Tatum has left behind the world of basements and Virginian dorm room production for better things..." Wild Nothing | Nocturne Nocturne , the second album Jack Tatum has produced under the Wild Nothing moniker, is in itself is not much different from his debut album, Gemini. Yes, the production is a bit flashier as Tatumn upgrades to better equipment and a live drummer instead of the drum machines used on his previous record, but it maintains all of the charm. Altogether, although it takes a few listens, Nocturne [...]

St. Louis is mostly known for beer and baseball- and those few years in a row where it was ranked as the country's most dangerous city, but Detroit took that title from them recently. While some of music's most famous stars are from the St. Louis area (Miles Davis, Chuck Berry, and Ike Turner to name just a few), it has never been a well-known music town. Growing up in the area, I remember the closest St. Louis came to widespread fame was The Urge's "Jump Right In" playing on MTV, and being the closest major city to where Jeff [...]
We're getting close to September now, but that doesn't mean there isn't anything good to listen to this week. In fact, this week is the beginning of a ridiculous few months of songs before year end officially kicks in. This week is Minus The Bear , a group who I've followed for years and years. Still, it doesn't get better than "Pachuca Sunrise" for me, but MTB seems to keep kicking out quality stuff, particularly with their latest album Infinity Overhead . Also this week are some hyped-up groups such as Teen , whose album [...]
Goodnight, moon. Captured Tracks, 2012 8.9 / 10.0 The first time I ever listened to Wild Nothing's 2010 debut album, Gemini, I could tell that it was something special. To be completely honest, it was probably my first foray into the lo-fi shoegaze scene that's become my obsession. Yet no band I've heard since, not [...]

"You are the music while the music lasts." -T.S. Eliot Cat Power - "Cherokee" (Nicolas Jaar Remix) “Cherokee”, the second single from Cat Power’ s upcoming LP Sun (September 4th, via Matador) gets a spooky reworking courtesy of producer Nicolas Jaar . By replacing the piano and drums with organs and strings, Jaar shifts the mood entirely, creating spacious ambience. Chan Marshall’s pleas of, “Marry me, marry me to the sky,” are now drenched in reverb. Instead of addressing the listener directly, it [...]

Later this month Wild Nothing (Jack Tatum to his mother) releases his excellent new album Nocturne . As well as this, he's also lauched a cracking new website that's based entirely around the moon. Crazy kid. So to celebrate he's offered up new single, 'Paradise', as a free download. Download: Wild Nothing - Paradise For Jack Tatum , the lunar phases speak to the months he spent writing the album: "There was a great deal of restlessness that went [...]
Wild Nothing Nocturne out on 8.28 Stream | MP3 | CD | Vinyl The 1980s are not always heralded as a great decade for music, but they were nevertheless a foundational period for bands that were reinterpreting pop. Groups like The Smiths and Primal Scream, who deftly fused pop melodies with a DIY, indie aesthetic, made tunes that were both natural outgrowths of the past and inspired portents of the future. Indeed, this [...]
It's not often that an opening act greatly outshines the headliner in a live show, but such was the case at Newport Music Hall friday night. I must admit, though, that the opening act, Wild Nothing, was the whole reason I even took the two hour trip with my friends to Columbus in the first [...]
