William Elliott Whitmore Appearing at Granada Theatre (Lawrence, KS) on Friday, February 10, 2012

So, as the New Year approaches, here are our favourite albums of 2011 for your consideration. Feel free to dispute, argue, or otherwise put us right because, if nothing else, music is as about as subjective topic as it is possible to get. Some of these may not be the "best" albums of the year as far as the critics are concerned, but that matters not, as they were the ones we enjoyed listening to most - give them a try, you might feel the same. 50 Jessica Lea Mayfield [...]

First I want to say that this was one of the hardest top lists I have ever done. Some of these don't deserve to be ranked any lower than the ones above them. While I didn't write as prolifically this year as I did others what I wrote about I really and truly loved. And then the other folks 'round these parts wrote about good stuff too. But the end of the year breeds top lists so I have been struggling for the past couple of weeks to actually rank these albums. I honestly will be doing some of these [...]

Scottish Kate is a great friend of this blog and has often offered her (sometimes pithy) opinions on the world of music - and very good taste she has too. She also runs the always excellent (sometimes pithy), and often provocative blog A Burdz Eye View for all things Scottish (of course), political and musical. Here are her aural selections for 2011. The Burd's Best Songs of 2011 Well it doesn't get any easier. Though given that all my old schticks are in here aplenty [...]

well, here it is the unofficial captains dead top 14 of the year list. i say unofficial because as there are a few more contributors lurking about, they may have their own top whatever list, and i hope they share said list with the class. not much has changed since i did my premature list back a few months ago. at least in the top 5/6 department. i went through the site and re-listened to everything i had tagged as "best of 20113 and after listening to these records, some changes definitely needed to be made. most notably the inclusion [...]

Artist : William Elliott Whitmore Venue : St Bonaventures Club, Bristol, UK Words and Photography by Amanda Penlington It's been a couple of years since William Elliott Whitmore visited Bristol but the acoustic artist from Iowa, who cut his teeth playing the DIY punk basement scene, got a rapturous reception from the packed-out audience at St Bonaventure's Club . He apologised to the "friends" assembled for not returning to the city sooner and [...]

So I am just now sitting down to talk about the James Vincent McMorrow show at the Bootleg Theater on September, 24th... First off, can I just say that the Bootleg Theater is my new favorite venue. Super intimate and chill, but also totally LA. I love it. And I am really excited that they are adding some of my favorite singer-songwriters to their event lineup. This is the same theater where I saw my dearest Alexi Murdoch . William [...]
Thought I would post on my top LAST.FM artists of the last 6 months for your perusal and judgment. While not completely accurate of my listening as there is still listen to music non-stop during my commute to work (2 hours daily) and my sad basement day job that don't get scrobbled to Last.fm for these charts. Overall I feel they reflect what I am listening to, but some artists may be up or down a spot or two. Let's get on with it! ~Slowcoustic's Last 6 months of top artists playlist~ [...]
Armed only with a banjo and a bass drum, William Elliot Whitmore makes a return to these shores for a show at the Sugar Club on Saturday November 19th in support of his new album Field Songs . William comes from the land, growing up on a farm in Lee County, Iowa, at the southeastern tip of the state, between the Des Moines and Mississippi Rivers. "It's some of the most fertile land in the world," Whitmore proudly proclaims. Still living on the same farm today, Whitmore has truly taken the time to discover where [...]
Ireland's answer to Bon Iver charmed the plaid-clad crowd of folksters.

as i laid on the couch last night, cause thats where i have been relegated to the past month or so, but thats another story - nothing bad, i was listening to a record that shall remain anonymous. even though its still 85+ degrees here in new orleans, its almost the october, and the end of the year. so i gots to thinkin, at this point what are my top ten records of the year? so i started rattling off records, in my head of course, and came to the conclusion that this year, 2011, has been the best year [...]

Bands tour all across the country (and the world!), but we don't generally give it a second thought, unless they are coming to our town. Today, we will compare two tour dates on the tour of The Low Anthem and William Elliott Whitmore and see how they measure up. One date was in Washington, DC at the famed 9:30 Club , as seen by TVD editor Kelly Kettering , and the other was a few hours away in the small West Virginia town of Marlinton at the Pocahontas [...]

A lot of great music today has a lot of pomp and circumstance (see: Lady GaGa, Kanye West, Gwar), but sometimes the best songs are sung with a quiet, cooing voice and a slowly strummed acoustic guitar. Thus, The Low Anthem . This americana/folk band rose to success with 20082s Oh My God, Charlie Darwin and released Smart Flesh last February, just a few days before they played DC's 6th & I Historic Synagogue (the last time they were here), where NPR live-streamed their performance. On [...]

William Elliott Whitmore's Iowa farmer perspective infuses darkly soulful songs with dirt under the fingernails realism put across with an extraordinary big, booming voice. Each song is a call to arms, inspiring the listener action and reaction. Reminds me of Jay Farrar - an old soul frozen in a young man's body. Field Songs evokes old time spirituals, songs of faith sung by slaves to try and ease their burdens. "Let's Do Something Impossible" implores the listener to reach for something grand, something unthinkable like escaping Alcatraz, defeating Custer or Hitler, or just betting it all on [...]

William Elliott Whitmore dignifies his seventh full-length ablum, Field Songs. This 33 year-old is an old soul. With deep vocals taking a lead role, Whitmore proves a love of folk music can be revived; along with the banjo. It is actually quite admirable to listen to Whitmore's music because you feel like you are directly playing a part in history. Field Songs has a certain "aura" to it. Maybe it's the old-fashioned tone that gets you feeling as if you have to like it just because it's part of our parent's generation. [...]
I have a confession. I always wanted to review THE folk album. A few came and went, wisps of sweet vanilla in the air. Few ever passed my tried and true test of what I call the 'foot tap'. The idea with the 'foot-tap' is, take any song on the album and without paying much heed to your body, check to see if you are tapping your foot or swaying from side to side. If by any chance you are eyeing that lighter on the table next to you, with eyes full of lust and ideas [...]
