Drop in whatever label you want, Wimps are awesome. The Seattle three-piece featuring guitarist Rachel Ratner (Butts, Partman Parthorse), bassist Matt Nyce (Meth Teeth) and drummer Dave Ram (The Intelligence) creates crazy punk songs with little infectious pop sensibilities thrown in a a huge ol' bonus. Their lyrics are wild and a bit neurotic. Take "Stop Having Fun" as a prime example: I got a long face / That's because I'm a horse and It's the time of the month / For you to shut up . [...]

Mariachi el Bronx perform at the Paramount on Tuesday / photo by Brittney Bollay With everyone descending on Austin this week for SXSW, that usually leaves things a bit bare in the cupboard. Luckily there are still some good choices for the folks staying at home. Things start with The James Hunter Six at Triple Door on Monday night. Tuesday night, there's a great show at the Paramount Theatre with Flogging Molly, Mariachi El Bronx , and Donots and then we have Star Anna, Jason Dodson & Kevin Barrans, and Erin [...]

Comin’ at you from that delicious Seattle cesspool of grunge, coffee, rain, and Microsoft: Wimps, the punk band you’ll be craving this semester. The dismally fun anthems off their debut LP Repeat will take up 24 minutes of your time, tops. And don’t come round here lookin’ for poetry, please. Wimps is best filed under P for Practical Advice... “when your life seems stuck on repeat: eat n’ sleep” or better yet “old food: don’t eat it.” Words to live by, my friends. Go here to grab free downloads, but don’t forget to [...]

The punk orders a beer. The slacker, this being Washington, lights up a spliff. Wimps order a pizza, get on the bar, do a big shoe dance and then on their way out knock over the row of Harley's outside. All is fine and nobody gets their lights punched out because even though they call themselves Wimps their kinda tough in a not so tough kind of way. They've also got some street cred having hung out with the Intelligence , Partman Parthorse and Meth Teet h to name just [...]

What a great week for shows, including a first look at the 2013 Sasquatch! lineup with a Launch Party & festival announcement on Monday night at Neptune Theatre with Built to Spill, Cody ChesnuTT and a surprise guest! If that wasn't enough excitement, Ben Folds Five and Nataly Dawn are at Showbox at the Market. On Tuesday night, Big Freedia and Don't Talk to the Cops are at Neumos, and on Wednesday, Adam Green & Binki Shapiro are at Barboza. On Thursday night, we celebrate Soundgarden 's [...]

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars As a pseudo-music critic it pains me to admit that I often have a tendency to over-analyze the music put before me. Sometimes music is just meant to be fun; it doesn't have to have this higher meaning you can only discern by thumbing through the lyrics sheet. The debut LP, Repeat , by Seattle's Wimps is just that. It's a rock n' roll record meant to be blasted loud through your speakers. If you approach it just [...]

This week had us chanting and begging to no one there; entertain us, please. Instead we were bored to tears over the hype surrounding Beyoncé lip-syncing the "Star Spangled Banner" at Obama's second inauguration, Fred Armisen's "In a Minute" bit on the Rachel Ray Show where Ray Ray name-checked mod-father Paul Weller to Fred omg-ing over Zach Hill's drumming prowess in Hella / Death Grips, to carry on luggage tips and insights. And you can add Pinnacl...
Repeat , the debut album from Seattle's Wimps just came out today, and based on the evidence, it's a refreshing piece of punk rock. There's no frills to this debut; it's an album with nothing but substance. The songs are gritty and sharp, but their juvenile and fun. This is precisely what made punk rock so endearing in the early days, with bands just blasting out their tunes in a raucous manner. You can pick up this album right now, and I encourage you to do so, as it's the first release [...]
