Ever since 2001 with the release of "Oh, Inverted World" , James Mercer has been making some of the catchiest, most genuine pop songs in recent memory. The compositions of Mercer have pretty much set the basic standard of what indie rock is and has been for the past decade, and have no doubt both inspired and energized the world of music. This constant stream of fantastic, well-executed pop music came to a halt after the release of "Wincing the Night Away" , which expanded and widened the sound of The Shins [...]

"A record lacking in the one thing that made previous works quite so charming: personality.." The Shins | Port of Morrow There aren’t many indie kingpins that could, having slowly wooed critics and fans alike with three glorious albums, ditch the rest of the band and its label (Sub Pop), record a ‘side project’ album with one of the most sought after knob twiddlers in the business and then, when finally they do get back to their day job employ former producer of Lily Allen and Britney Spears, all without so much as a [...]

The Shins release their new album, "Port of Morrow" , on March 19th, but just in case the week-long wait is too much to bear, you can stream the full thing right now. The Shins are back, people; and that's something to get really excited about. After an absence of more than five years since 20072s "Wincing The Night Away" , we're finally getting a new full-length effort from the band, "Port of Morrow" , which is out on March 19 via Aural Apothecary (which [...]

The last time The Shins put out an album the following was still true: Heath Ledger was alive, the Emergency Stabilization Act was an absurdity resting in the comfortably distant future, and Aaron Rodgers had not played a single game as the Packer's starting QB. The year was 2007, the album was the successful but underrated Wincing the Night Away . We haven't heard much from the band in the five years since (with the exception of Broken Bells - James Mercer's collaboration with Danger Mouse) so the upcoming Port of Morrow is something of an occasion for us [...]

After 2007’s Wincing the Night Away , the Grammy-nominated album that established The Shins as the latest indie darlings to crash the mainstream, the band seemed destined for even bigger things. But James Mercer had other plans, teaming up with Danger Mouse to release an album and an EP as Broken Bells, which seemed more than a side-project vamp at the time. And that’s why it’s such a delight to hear “Simple Song,” the band’s first single off the forthcoming LP Port of Morrow . It finds James Mercer embracing once more the bright, [...]

Words by Jacob Barron It's about 8pm as I'm writing this. If it was two weeks ago, my window would've been all urban darkness, struck with a few errant shafts of orange street light. As it stands, however, I can still discern not only the silhouettes of the buildings that occupy the crappy view from my apartment, but also their colors and windows and features. It is spring, my friends. The days are getting ever longer, and things are looking altogether brighter, from the colors of the clothes you're probably planning on [...]
The Shins right now are no longer the Shins they used to be—founder James Mercer debuted a new line-up (with members of Modest Mouse and Fruit Bats) last week and will be taking the band from Sub Pop to their own label All Apothecary for their next releases. He speaks now about this and Bob Dylan, Heath Ledger and Kermit the Frog, too. This interview by Daiana Feuer.
Since I don't get around to checking Google Reader half as much as I should. it turns out I've missed at least two good videos over the past few days. The first is The Shins 'Australia', and the second is Feist's '1 2 3 42. Each possesses it's own odd charm, whether that charm be of the hot-air-balloon-stealing nature, or the crazy-gitdancing nature.Sure, there's no Peaches in '1 2 3 42, but maybe that's a good thing. Enjoy the videos and mp3s. [...]

I still stand firm in my opinion that Wincing The Night Away was unfairly panned. So to help get people forming their own opinions, I present to you these extra tracks from the Japanese version of Wincing. The first is a regular b-side, which is fine and all, but the other track is much more interesting. It's an alternate take on 'Split Needles', which turns out quite different from the album version; I won't ruin the surprise for you. The Shins - Nothing At All.mp3 [...]

All week I've been thinking about doing some type of January retrospective. But then I realized that that would be a lot of writing. So last night I fired up GIMP and threw this together. It's just a mashup-wallpaper of some of the albums that I listened to the most during January. They didn't necessarily come out in January, but they did chew up a good chunk of my time. Even though it makes me a little dizzy if I look at it too fast, I'm pretty happy with the end result. The wallpaper is optimized for my [...]

There aren't many albums that people are almost tired of hearing and hearing about only days after their proper release. But in a age of "leaked" albums and excessive downloading with no remorse or intent to actually purchase the product, it happens. And it has happened to a large degree with the new album from The Shins , "Wincing The Night Away." When the album leaked to the greedy hands of downloader's across the web months ago, Sub Pop did something right and pushed out an official single, "Phantom Limb" to divert the [...]

“Wincing the Night Away” Sub Pop; 2007 8/10 It’s been just about three years since everyone’s last heard of the Shins. Since their last record, “Chutes Too Narrow,” they got a pretty big boost in popularity thanks Natalie Portman and “Garden State,” which probably placed a huge amount of pressure on the band to not release a dud. And did they release a dud with “Wincing the Night Away”? Well, most people seem to think so. I keep hearing that it sucks, it’s too different, or some combination of the two. I, however, happen [...]
