well ill be damned! i totally missed this email, but of course it came when i was on vacation. damn canadians the deep dark woods have a new record coming out on 8.2 entitled the place i left behind - six shooter records is releasing it, btw. their 09 release, the winter hours , was one of my favorites from said year and this one seems to be continuing in that same vein of awesomeness. the place i left behind is not a summery record, by any means, and with a band name [...]

I have not spent a lot of time in Saskatchewan; a Saskatchewan band with the name The Deep Dark Woods does not create the sort of imagery that will likely change this. However, the music said band has created has piqued my interest in the land of rough riders and 80s haircuts; the 80s haircut joke is actually a lead in to my favorite quality of The Deep Dark Woods. All the songs on the band's 3rd full-length release "Winter Hours", especially All the Money I Had is gone , feel like they've come right out of [...]
The Autumn equinox has come and gone with a mere whisper, and we've been enjoying jacket weather by nightfall for some time now here in New York City. The pleasant shift in season mirrors a shift in my musical tastes, as I tend to crack out more dreamy, reflective tunes to celebrate the falling of the leaves. I've already made mention of one of my all-time seasonal favorites, but there are dozens more to choose from. Naturally, this calls for a video playlist, complete with a few extra hidden gems for your clicking pleasure. Let's begin, shall [...]

Tombs Winter Hours Relapse Records Release Date: 02.17.09 Brooklyn is experiencing quite the revival when it comes to heavy music. Or maybe it's just that people outside of NYC are taking notice again. Hardcore and metal have always thrived in The Rotten Apple in the face of trends, with bands like Batillus and So Hideous My Love receiving a lot of attention of late. On all the up and comers, Tombs are definitely one of the biggest Brooklyn success stories. Since their inception in 2007, their EP on singer/guitarist Mike Hill's Black Box [...]

its hard not to listen to the deep dark woods' winter hours and not feel something, anything. the album's tones of despair, regret, and pure shit luck make for a pretty heavy record, but like will oldham, you will actually find hints of the opposite if you give it a chance to sink in. the lack a defining time frame as to when it was recorded was one of the first things that struck me most about winter hours . there is nothing about this record to suggest that it was recorded in 2008 and not 1958 [...]

New Wax In a year with its share of notable album releases, Feb. 17 marks yet another particularly momentous day, so I'm going to do my best to delve into a few of them. First on the docket is The Deep Dark Woods' new album Winter Hours . The Saskatchewan alt. country group's third full-length trades in some of their dark grit for a more nostalgic sound. Winter Hours revolves around reminiscence and regret. Take, for instance, the album's gem "All The Money I Had [...]
So my last two post have been Stripmall Ballads and The Sumner Brothers and to finish off this Canadian trilogy I present to you The Deep Dark Woods . Since they sent me their new album Winter Hours last week I can honestly say I must have heard it at least fifty times in that period and I can't see myself stopping any time soon as it is an album that, for me at least, takes a few listens to really appreciate the craftsmanship at work. Stunning, spine tingling harmonmies, beautiful arrangements and [...]

Winter Hours, The Deep Dark Woods' [Myspace] sophomore release on Black Hen Music, is an album full of raw emotion, sadness, beautiful vocals and harmonies, new sounds, and well thought out...

I used to DJ for a college radio station through the 80's and 90's, which means there are a lot of cataloged songs from that period that live in deep recesses of my mind. Some have been a bit elusive to find. But with a little tenacity and time, I've managed to unearth many of them over the years. Here are six gems that not only transport you back in time, but still hold up as just good music. Trio - Broken Hearts for You and Me [...]
Felt like a really good show. New and old music from Marah, in anticipation of their tour which kicks off in Providence next week. Also a set of songs inspired by and including Jack Kerouac. Have a listen. (Had some technical difficulties with the podcast. It's in two parts, which is a good thing. But two songs got cut off in the process, not to mention some of my scintillating banter. Not good. I've made those songs [...]

M ore eighties American roots music, the Winter Hours recorded what is probably one of my favorite EPs of all time. Released in 1986, the Wait Til The Morning EP probably stands as the Winter Hours’ most recognized recording. In fact, I'd have to state that it stands as the pinnacle of the group’s recordings that, while all quite good, don't quite match what they did here. It’s one of those EPs that I rank up there with the Chameleons’ Tony Fletcher Walked On Water . According to Michael [...]
