In today's post, we have a 2nd track from the forthcoming Bowerbirds album The Clearing , which I have to say is getting me more and more excited; we have a new track off a new Woodpigeon EP For Paolo that is pretty damn awesome; we have a couple tracks that I like from bands I don't know much about, some that I know a little more about ( Said the Whale , Damien Jurado ), and we have the "slow version" of Superchunk 's absolutely brilliant 2009 B-side "Blinders", the [...]
I didn't hear a lot of new albums this month, but I did keep up pretty well with hearing new tracks via PR and my favorite blogs. Here's a mix of favorite finds, old and new, that I haven't already written about this month. Special shoutout to the blogs who hepped me to some of these tracks— Aquarium Drunkard (Reparata & the Delrons), For the Sake of the Song (White Fence, Etta James, and Woodpigeon), and the Rising Storm (Dave Davies). (I came across the rest via Pitchfork and innumerable other blogs [...]

Killbeat If we were to spool up the Wayback Machine to November 2006 , you'd find a post where I confessed that sending me a lovely slab of vinyl was a pretty good way to get to the top of my "to listen to" pile... something that apparently still holds true over a half decade later. But as I pointed out even way back then, a listen is not the same as a writeup so I find it comforting to know that Camp Radio still has the goods to impress in whatever format they're [...]

Recent pickings aplenty in the For The Sake Of The Song headquarters, so let's not waste any precious time. First up: the Owsley Brothers, doing that dirty garage blues thingy very well. Rotten On The Vine is a teaser for their new album Cobalt , out in March. Can't wait, guys. On now to our Canadian pals from Woodpigeon. Love some of their tunes, while others strangely enough leave me cold somehow. This time I'm in luck, as the dreamy title track of their recent ep For Paolo definitely falls in the former [...]

Woodpigeon - For Paolo "For Woodpigeon songwriter Mark Andrew Hamilton, For Paolo was inspired by his parents, the cassette tapes they played on long, family drives across the prairies of Canada." This is such a beautiful concept to build an EP around. As common as it is for musicians to refer to their parents' old records as inspiration, there's something refreshing about building a project around the music you were forced to listen to, whether you enjoyed it or not. Most folks within my [...]

Frank Yang Though his punk credentials are beyond reproach thans to his tenure in Propagandhi , John K. Samson has always cut a bit of a curious figure in front of The Weakerthans . While his bandmates are more than willing and able to play the part of rockers in turning out muscular guitar riffs and solos, Samson by comparison has always been a bit slight of stature, reedy of voice, sheepish of grin; the thoughtful and verbose folksinger who somehow ended up fronting a rock band. I don't know if the [...]
Impressively bearded Woodpigeon frontman Mark Andrew Hamilton designed his band's new EP to emulate the cassettes that he used to listen to while riding around in his parents' car. This breezy sense of looking back at Carole King and Fleetwood Mac is definitely done more in spirit than sonically, but the lithe, smooth indie pop that Hamilton and Co. come up with on the For Paolo EP could be the soundtrack to a new generation of night cruising. Originally formed in Scotland as Woodpigeon Divided By Antelope Equals Squirrel, the now Calgary, Alberta based [...]

Todd V Wolfson I feel that I should say up front that any reservations I have about Kathleen Edwards and her work are entirely my own issues. Since her 2002 debut Failer , I've enjoyed her honest, roots-rock fare but always felt like I expected more from her creatively even though across her first three albums, she'd never shown any signs that she had ambitions beyond being a good singer-songwriter. That said, the fact that she spent her downtime following 20082s Asking For Flowers [...]

Woodpigeon - "Are You There, God? It's Me, Mark" . A song of seeking love, like so many others. But Mark Hamilton beseeches the universe in a tone that is unexpected, rough. "Are You There, God?" is gorgeous and furious. It's unsettled. These are the browns and navy blues of a painted shipwreck, a frozen shipwreck, a shipwreck at that moment where it is not yet wrecked; and the sun may rise, and the waves may settle, and the world may be kind, not cruel. Even the coda's sweetness is laced with something bitter; perhaps it is poison, perhaps it [...]

Calgary's Woodpigeon (aka Mark Andrew Hamilton) has a busy year lined-up. He's got two full length albums ready to go, but he kicks it all off on January 24th with the release of the EP For Paolo . The title track is beautiful, melodic, and mellow. That makes the bookend cut, "For Paolo (Acoustic)" even more remarkable since a tweak in the presentation makes for an entirely new vibe, this one eerie. The songs can be hard to penetrate from time-to-time however. With a song like "By Lamplight" [...]
by teepoo Woodpigeon - For Paolo from Boompa Records on Vimeo . I felt like it's been forever since Woodpigeon released something. There's finally an EP coming on January 24th, 2012 . Kicking it off will be For Paolo and here's a black and white video filmed for it. I'm liking what I hear so far.

For Paulo , the new EP from Woodpigeon , may have started as a tribute to family road trips and Mark Hamilton's mandatory musical roots, but there's more at play here. Hamilton cites touch-points like Fleetwood Mac, Boys Don't Cry and Iron Butterfly as the inspiration for his melodies, but underneath those lasting nostalgic hues is something real and unfortunately, more finite. For Paulo is a dedication of love, exposing the often banal, insecure but highly personal moments we all hope to share with someone. Opening with a tribute [...]

Facebook Nestled amidst some concert announcements in a post last week were a couple of odd one-offs for No Joy and PS I Love You which were not part of any announced tour or timely promotional cycle. It didn't occur to me to ask why, but just a little bit of thought would have made the answer obvious - Wavelength . The dates of their shows corresponded to the four-day weekend of the Toronto music series' twelfth anniversary festival, and though neither of those acts is properly local - they [...]

Here is a beautiful new number from Canadian based outfit Woodpigeon called "For Paulo". I discovered these guys a couple years ago when they sent me some music and I've fallen for them ever since. This new song appears on a new digital only EP from the group entitled For Paulo of course. A video for this song has actually been available for a little while, but this is the first I'm hearin' of it... Imagine that! Watch the Woodpigeon bandcamp site around January 24th when [...]

Amanda Leigh Smith And we're back. Gotta tell you, folks - actually taking a holiday during the holidays? I could get used to that. But if I stayed off the job, then I couldn't write about Blouse and I kind of want to write about Blouse, considering I was listening to their self-titled debut an awful lot in the weeks leading up to and throughout the holidays. The trio collects their mail in Portland, Oregon but draw their inspiration from the great English art-rock labels of the '80s; their [...]
