Review | Sparrow & The Workshop ~ Murderopolis

Review | Sparrow & The Workshop ~ Murderopolis Sparrow & The Workshop | Murderopolis Words by Lee Adcock Never assume, dear readers, that “ folk music ” always entails gentle, quiet acoustic ballads. Sparrow and the Workshop , folk deviants from Glasgow, are about to unleash their first release Murderopolis for Edinburgh-based Song, By Toad Records (their third in general), and it’s a mighty force. No subtle melodies or wide-eyed freak-outs here – this LP blazes forth with the raw, snarling guitars, brooding bass lines, and galloping [...]

Review: Made Love To The Dragon – Workshop

What I like best about the new Workshop album, is the complete absence of a laugh track. Yes, I found the comedy rock outfit’s sophomore effort funny. But, I never quite laughed when I was supposed to. For a band whose foremost aim is to win laughter, the Demonstealer -fronted quartet seem to falter whenever they try. If it weren't for the instruments, you'd hear the crickets after every punchline. And we made love to the dragon The fire did evoke [...]

Sparrow and The Workshop – Murderopolis (2013)

TOTD // 079; Sparrow & The Workshop ~ Shock Shock

TOTD // 079; Sparrow & The Workshop ~ Shock Shock There's nothing wrong with songs from the quieter side of the tracks - heck, you're reading a blog named after an Elliott Smith lyric after all - but there's still something thrilling about a band who make that change from subtle sensibilities to raucous rock gods. Glasgow-based Sparrow & The Workshop have been long-time favourites of ours and you may well recall the stunning demo submitted to our first compilation back at the start of the Summer. All that restraint has been forgotten now though, replaced instead by two-and-a-half minutes of dirty [...]

Sparrow and the Workshop – Murderopolis

Sparrow and the Workshop – Murderopolis In May Song, by Toad Records will be releasing the third album by the fantastic Sparrow and the Workshop . The album is called Murderopolis , will available on vinyl and CD, and can be pre-ordered from here as of now (although we won't be posting them out until April). As those of you who have heard the new single Shock Shock will probably know, the sound is a lot more feral these days, and Jill positively snarls at you in a lot of these songs.  Darkness is almost unhinged, [...]

Various Artists, Workshop 15

Various Artists, Workshop 15 [ Workshop ] For all the outstanding three trackers from Workshop regulars like Kassem Mosse and Move D, the best Workshop releases tend to be their various-artist compilations. Thomas Hammann debuts as 808 Mate (it's like "Joy Orbison" all over again), hitting the [...]
