A couple of weeks ago, what looks very much like a fan made video for Wowser Bowser's ebullient, '80s-tinged dance jam "To the Pleasant Life!" surfaced on the Internet, and while I never would've thought to pair this song with any sort of outer space or sci-fi theme, I've got to admit I'm digging the combination of intergalactic imagery and blustery beats. Wowser Bowser 's debut, self-titled full-length is a wonderful introduction to a local outfit on the rise. The eclectic collection of songs, released back in January, is one of the better local albums to come out so far this year. Some good stuff in here for the open-minded, after all our Weekly Download doesn't drop into one specific genre. There's a bit of everything this week from gangsta-bluegrass to electronic-rock. Wowser Bowser is a band that is all about energy-explosive, courageously joyful and unadulterated energy. Of course, their vivacity could get old after a track or two, but because it feels so organic, as opposed to forced or artificially summoned, Wowser Bowsers almost juvenile vigor is nothing but endearing. " Water Story, " serves as an anthemic album opener, and "The Garden" follows in a similar vein, feeling something like the result of a marriage between Animal Collective's sonic sensibilities and Edward Sharpe's unabashed love of life. It’s a bit puzzling, then, when the first impression a band makes involves listing their genre on Myspace as “Healing & Easy Listening / Regional Mexican / Tango”. That has to be a joke, right? Right. Either that or Atlanta-based band Wowser Bowser has no idea what any of those three genres is actually about. With each track, Wowser Bowser dares you to have as much fun as they are.
