Well?

Well? No text

Six Words. Six stories.

I read once that Hemingway, as a creative exercise, would limit himself to writing stories containing only six words. I want you to try as well. Reply with your six-word stories. Channel your frustration at __insert world/society/community/indivi dual__ into something creative. Don't put too much thought into them, just write and see what comes out. Think of it as a haiku of sorts. More open-ended. It doesn't have to make sense to anyone but you. [...]

Lazing On A Sunny Afternoon

Sunny Afternoon - The Kinks Well, it was actually cloudy. Bad start. It was Sunday though, yesterday in fact. And I was lazing. Full on. Pants off. Couch on. Watching The Masters on TV. Adam Scott and Angel Cabrera battling it out for the green jacket. It's about half three in the afternoon. Tired enough [...]

Movie of the Week: Lester Bangs interview (audio only, 1980)

Movie of the Week: Lester Bangs interview (audio only, 1980) Today I'm trying something a little different. I have this audio-only interview of Lester Bangs as done by Sue Matthews for ABC Radio in Australia. May 13, 1980 is the date apparently. Its lengthy but worth a listen... We could use more people with an opinion like Lester's these days, never mind writers (although we could use some writers even half as good as he could be). The audio skips & hiccups around the four minute mark until about 8:30. Don't worry, there's plenty else here to chew on.

Miami Vice. Very Nice.

Boogie Shoes - KC & The Sunshine Band Winning Streak. Back in the day this was the main TV game show in Ireland. Might still be. Contestants would go on and spin a wheel or guess something and win money. The easy part was winning. The hard part was getting on. I think you had [...]

Punk Is in the Air, or Thanks For The Mention, James Wolcott

Punk Is in the Air, or Thanks For The Mention, James Wolcott Who says print media is dead? I don't get the chance to toot my own horn often, but James Wolcott mentions Stupefaction in the May 2013 issue of Vanity Fair! Thank you James! About us, along with Dangerous Minds, Wolcott writes "Web sites such as Stupefaction and Dangerous Minds routinely showcase rare and revelatory archaeological finds from the punk netherworld: rehearsal and concert videos that resemble the recovered dreams of long-defunct tape decks. Watching footage of the original Television—Richard Hell, Tom Verlaine, Richard Lloyd, [...]

Hold Me Closer, Private Dancer

Dancing In The Moonlight - Thin Lizzy Thirty minutes in. I think I might be drunk. A tad tipsy. High as a kite. On my way to skunks who are drunks town. In the non-literal sense. Obviously. Literally, I'm 45,000 feet in the air on the way to Miami. High flying. Fly in the sky. [...]

Rap Game Georges Simenon

Canibus - Adversarial Theatre Of Justice (ft. Grayskul)
Just once, I want to name a novel after a rap lyric. — Owen Laukkanen (@owenlaukkanen) March 7, 2013 Laukkanen, whose debut novel The Professionals was blurbed by no less than former Simon & Simon writer and author of the comic (as in comedy, not the other kind) crime classic Metzger's Dog Thomas Perry , might be on to something. I dunno. What I do know, though, is that I like crime novels named after pop songs. And I'm using pop in [...]

This one's for free

Everything is free
People have been writing for no money for as long as there's been no money to write for. Here are a few reasons I will sometimes write for free. I like and/or believe in the outlet I'm writing for free for There are fringe benefits to writing the story, eg: motorcycle pants, cruise tickets, lunch Writing the piece will open a door previously closed to me, eg: Poland I owe someone a favour I want someone to like me It's fun [...]

[opinion] The Value of Good Writing

If you’re in tune with the ceaseless chatter that makes up Twitter, you may have run across the most recent item to get everyone worked into a lather: the fact that The Atlantic asked a writer to repurpose a story of his for their website, and do it for free. That writer subsequently took to his own blog to regale his readership (and now the masses) with the unfortunate story, and The Atlantic has since pushed back in their own way , issuing semi-apologies and justification for the fact [...]

R-E-S-P-E-C-T: find out etc.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T: find out etc. People who write crime fiction: stop telling us that cop work or P.I. work or coffee-serving work isn't as glamorous and action-packed as it is in the movies. "Oh, it's not as exciting as James Garner makes it look on TV," said the character in the book that is on the verge of getting slammed shut and never opened again. "All I need is a pair of sunglasses, and I'd be a real David Caruso." The worst, though, is when some jackass writer makes this big deal in the first or second chapter about how his cop character isn't some [...]
