Toronto - Memory Tapes have been classified by some as chillwave, but what the hell does that even mean? It's not like I'm being wilfully ignorant here - I've listened to a few of the bands that have been categorized as such and I'm certainly able to look up the Wikipedia entry on chillwave if in need of further clarification. It's just that it really seems like a somewhat meaningless and arbitrary genre classification. It's a problem with a lot of more recently created genres. Another example is witch house. What kind of crappy name for a music genre is that? [...]
![SBTRKT ft. Drake – Wildfire (Live in Toronto) [Video]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3572028_lg.jpg)
SBTRKT and Drake bring his "Wildfire" remix to life at Wrongbar in Toronto last night. Now, I didn't post this video for the fact of Drake being in Toronto and showing hometown love, I posted it to the fact that at the 4:51 mark, Drizzy does the most swag thing I've ever seen him do... he makes this face about a fan being up on stage, a fan he just wrapped his arm around for a photo op, and gives her the one arm shove! Now go ahead and enjoy that comedic footage.

So what were you doing on a Friday night in Toronto? If you buried yourself in your apartment that's a shame because the Denmark's house phenom Julio Bashmore was in town and tending to the lovesick was in his interest. Playing a long passionate set of deep house into the after hours, it was clear that Julio was our aphrodisiac. As expected he played his best card Battle for Middle You which has become an anthem for house heads in the past couple of months. [Audio clip: view full post to listen] Download: [...]

1279 Queen Street West Toronto, ON M6K 1L4 (416) 516-8677 http://wrongbar.com/ http://twitter.com/wrongbar Toronto - Deep in the heart of Parkdale, amidst all the dollar stores and roti restaurants, lies the Wrongbar. A little bar that opened up a few years ago, the Wrongbar has slowly but surely been building up its reputation as a viable concert option and has found a niche as the go to venue for a lot of up and coming electronic/dance acts. I almost instantly liked the Wrongbar, primarily because it is [...]

This past Wednesday the PnT family hit up good old Wrongbar to check out Toddla T and Untold . While both producers spun wicked sets, I was rreeeeeaaaaalllly feeling the set of UK producer, DJ and Hemlock Recordings ' boss Untold . This guy came at the crowd with some next level catch-you-by-surprise shit. Real gnarly, wobble-laden, IN-YO-FACE bass music that peaked people's energy in the club - - the whole place went bonkers. What a show. Listen to Untold's track Stereo Freeze [...]

Esben and the Witch: photo by Michael Ligon <!-- I guess a Polaris Music Prize win doesn't guarantee a lineup down the block for a band's Canadian Musicfest set that's in a relatively intimate venue, well at least if your Montreal Francophone act Karkwa. I generally didn't line up all that long arriving about half an hour before their scheduled set time and when I got in I found the venue to be have ample elbow room amongst those already inside. Members of the band had actually sauntered past us in line as they arrove [...]

Austra @ Wrongbar: photo by Michael Ligon It's no wonder that I only saw two bands for my second night(on March 12) of Canadian Musicfest as my first night consisted of 6 bands in total, the first three which I reviewed a few days ago . Let's waste no time and continue onward. Next up for the midnight-and-onward festivities was Brian Borcherdt at The Garrison. Borcherdt is better known in most circles as the frontman of sound/beat manipulators Holy Fuck , but his work as a singer-songwriter [...]

Saturday July 24th will always be remembered as a hot, sticky day. The outlook throughout the day was rather glum. The wall of rain that soaked Toronto during the afternoon was definitely a worry with many people thinking of reconsidering their plans for the night. For others, the showers was not going to pose a problem. By 10:30 the line wasn't huge at all, but the business inside was slowly starting to pick up. Tapedeck Bros were up. [...]

Finally here is part 3 of my adventures at NXNE . The events that took place on June 19, 2010. Not alot happened during the afternoon. I decided to take a small break and do some shopping. It was also the same day as the Toronto Island show with Pavement and Broken Social Scene. I did check out the Young Dundas Square show. Heard abit of Surfer Blood and abit of Wavves. Met the lead singer of Surfer Blood and apparently thought my name was Nick. I wasn't getting into Wavves [...]

Best Coast: photo by Michael Ligon This year's NXNE was arguably the best Toronto's had since it's exception in 1994, at the very least the best I've experienced since I started regularly attending the festival in 2004. Although the festival officially kicked off on Wednesday June 16, it was the next day[Thursday June 17] that the festival kicked into high gear with most people, like myself, beginning their venue hopping. Having booked off June 17 and 18 from work, I devoted some of my free time on the 17th to finally give [...]
Here is part 2 of my times at NXNE in Toronto. These are the events that happened on Friday June 18, 2010. Its was a full day of excitement. BBQs, live music at a park and various venue hopping. This is one long post. The first stop was going to Bellwoods Trinty Park. Took me about an hour finding out where the spot is considering Bellwoods is a big park. It was a great afternoon listening to bands play their songs acoustic. The best were of [...]

Toronto - When we walked into the Wrongbar at 11pm there was already a large, and somewhat weird (in composition) crowd. I thought it was because we had missed Bobby Birdman 's set (who was interesting on the strength of myspace samples - alas I was delayed by the awesome power of Mass Effect 2). But there was an even weirder girl standing alone on the stage, complete with fuzzy hair and a pair of huge white-rimmed plastic glasses. Being the ignorant snob that I am, my autonomic reflex said: "she's a stage [...]
