Microsoft announced today via its blog that it will be selling its Mediaroom properties to Ericsson. Mediaroom operated as a quasi-separate entity from Microsoft, who is going all-in with an IPTV strategy based on the Xbox . At Ericsson, Mediaroom will continue to operate essentially as per usual, with that company investing in growing the business, while at Microsoft, the sale allows Microsoft to dedicate “all TV resources to Xbox in a continued mission to make it the premium entertainment service that delivers all the games and entertainment consumers want,” Microsoft said in [...]

According to several reports, Microsoft will announce their newest Xbox gaming console on May 21st of this year, with the console's launch coming in "early November" according to eurogamer.net . The reports also claim that the machine will simply be named just "Xbox" and will cost around $500 with a subscription or $300 with a lower level model. As for the news we brought you earlier in the year that speculated Microsoft's latest offering would be always-online and require an Internet connection to function, that appears to still be accurate. No word on whether [...]

In many ways the foundation of the potential success of Xbox Music is built on the fact that music has long permeated the Xbox experience. Even as Microsoft has developed Xbox Music, they've been extending the Xbox brand to not only connect Microsoft entertainment offerings but to tie together hardware via Xbox Live. As Tyler Hayes notes, "Who would have thought a few years ago that the Xbox would be a trojan horse for music, or that it could actually pull it off?" Tyler Hayes asked " Why Is No One Talking About [...]

When Forza Horizon is released on Xbox 360 Microsoft Sweden thought that the soundtrack was lacking tracks from Swedish artists. They decided to put together it's own soundtrack inspired by the game. The result is tracks from John Dahlbäck, Marcus Price & Carli and Style of Eye with tracks that are made to be played on high volume on your cars stereo, no matter if it's a sports car or a scrap car. The EP will be released on Itunes tomorrow but we got it one day early for you to listen to.
One way to read this Bloomberg story is at face value : that cable companies are making console video games irrelevant because they are "gearing up" to offer video games directly to customers. The other way to read the article is to laugh and suggest that Bloomberg got duped by the three major cable providers in a clever PR move. The Xbox and Playstation are the ones making cable companies obsolete as they continue to offer more apps and streaming television services. The Xbox is basically a few steps away from being all anything anyone needs [...]

FWD's Matt Buchanan argues that if you're going to be buying any sort of tech gadget, make sure you are buying one that is great to use today and not something that has the promise of greatness once it receives an update. The even grosser, hairier underbelly of update culture is beta culture : Companies releasing products that aren't finished because they can "finish them" after you've paid money for them. Because you expect updates, and well, simply because they can, releasing not-quite-finished products is all part of the plan. Whether it's finally optimizing [...]
Microsoft is finally putting the pieces in place for its "three screens and a cloud" approach to computing. It's the same one Apple is successfully taking, obviously, and one that Google is currently struggling how to crack. We won't know how Microsoft fairs until all of its Windows 8 products are released, as well as the next-generation Xbox.

Farhad Manjoo makes the interesting observation that Microsoft's Xbox is already ahead of the curve when it comes to bringing television into the Internet-era. Over the last few months, Microsoft has turned its video-game console into your TV’s best friend. Late last year, the company revamped the Xbox’s interface, adding a wonderful voice-search feature through the Kinect motion-gaming add-on. Microsoft also added dozens of entertainment services to its Xbox Live online plan, including Netflix, Hulu, ESPN, and on-demand video from cable and satellite services around the world. This week, the [...]
