In a sense, Kid Smpl's remix of The xx's "Fiction" demarcates the logical furthest extent of the London trio's vision. It's made up almost entirely of infrequent, out of breath kicks, melancholy keys and atmospheric found sounds. I don't know what it is about The xx but they keep delivering singles and re-edits that I cannot stop listening to. The minimalist style allows for other artists to come in and fool around, but what I appreciate the most about this band is their willingness to play around with their own stuff. Jamie xx does some reworking of his own (well, mostly his own) material, changing up The xx track "Sunset". While keeping the vocals of Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim in tact, Jamie extends the song by nearly double its original length, adding in an incredibly catchy bassline, sweeping synthesized drones, and a slew of solid drum machine effects. The result is a much clubbier track than the original, but in no way is that a negative. The xx released their sophomore album, Coexist , this past year and I must admit-I was a pretty bad fan. The only time I really listened to the LP was when I was trying to fall asleep and to this day I honestly can't really tell one song for another, aside from the first track. Anyways! "Sunset" is good. So, this is essentially a metaremix , as Jamie xx already produced the original version. I think he makes it better, doesn't overdo it...but that's not really his thing.
