Over the weekend The xx threw their first festival, Night + Day, in Lisbon. The first of three shows featured acts like John Talabot, James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem, and of course a performance from The xx. Held on the water near an old castle the festival was completely curated by members of The xx, from the location down to the acts. You'd think The xx 's quiet minimalism wouldn't exactly fit in the extravagant, blown-out universe Baz Luhrmann has created for The Great Gatsby , but the sultry Brits sound right at home on the film's star-studded soundtrack. "Together" uses the group's spare foundation to dial into the yearning romance and slight sense of doom at the center of Jay Gatsby's tale. It's all boilerplate xx (which is still really good!), but then a drum machine kicks in around the 3:00 mark followed by — whoa! — melodramatic, Lana-like strings. Apparently [...]

The first weekend of Coachella flew by, and there were lots of memorable moments. Hell, R. Kelly joined Phoenix onstage in a surprise moment of the festival. Given the nature of the festival, with its well-established live streaming and eager fans with cameras in hand, it wasn't long before a decent amount of videos hit the web. After the jump, you can check out a whole swath of these uploaded videos, including full sets from The xx, Earl Sweatshirt, Blur and Vampire Weekend along with shorter clips from so many more. Time for some more interesting Coachella happenings. Solange popped up on stage during the xx's set to perform Aaliyah's "Hot Like Fire." The music festival experience has completely transformed in the past few years. If you're one of the many music heads who aren't fortunate enough to be able to attend Coachella you can now enjoy from the comforts of your own home. 'Coachella Couch Tour' if you will. Though it may not be the most shocking unannounced addition to the Coachella bill, Solange 's appearance on stage with the XX can easily be counted among the most pleasant surprises from weekend one of the festival. Hundred Waters are a quartet from Gainesville, Florida whose soft combination of organic and electronic attracted the most unlikely of label bosses, superstar Skrillex . Members Nicole Miglis, Trayer Tryon, Paul Giese, Zach Tetreault, and Allen Scott played together in various formations as friends back in middle school, but it took until adulthood and 2011 for them to become Hundred Waters.
