5 Songs is a weekly series where we point out the strange, the grand, and the unique connections between our favorite songs. Let's get weird. Words by Chris Wilco is a lot of things. Okay, bad start. Wilco is. That's better. It's kind of hard to put a finger on this band's direction from time-to-time, and that's probably good. They make interesting records, that's for sure. [...]

As you should already know Wilco just released their album, The Whole Love. A LP that finds the band squarely back in their Yenkee Hotel Foxtrot sonic realm, it features beautiful melodies and grating sounds that combine to form a delicate and complex soundscape. NPR recently recorded Wilco performing a two hour set full of both new cuts and classics from as far back as 1995's A.M. Obviously this recording is something special. Click here to stream. Setlist: Art of Almost I Might Black Moon I'm Trying [...]

Glenn Kotche is a busy man, as you might expect from the 41 st best drummer of all time, as decided by Gigwise in 2008. If he isn't jugging drumsticks and tambourines, it's a three-year-old and a one-year-old. ("Either way, my hands are always full...") When The Line of Best Fit calls him at his Chicago home, he's buzzing. Wilco , the band he's been a member of for a decade, are about to release their eighth album, and their fifth with Kotche at the helm. The Whole Love was [...]

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars After a string of moderately received albums, many wondered if The Whole Love would be the record where Wilco return to form. If you ask long time fans, you might get some skepticism, but by and large, this is probably one of the most enjoyable listens for the band since the days of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. "Art of Almost" opens with bits of sporadic noise gurgling through [...]

Well, hey there everyone. I know it's been a while since I managed to get a post up here. I have to apologize. Between traveling and moving I haven't had time to get a proper write-up done, and you deserve better than halfassery. You know you do. So please forgive me and let's move along with our lives. About a week ago Wilco streamed their entire new album for 24 hours. If you were lucky enough to catch it, you'll know why I'm excited for the release on the 27th. I know that's almost two weeks away but [...]

Tweet The Wilco documentary I Am Trying To Break Your Heart is one of the most inspirational films I've seen. Wilco lover or not, this film will hit home. Much of the film centers around the relationship between Bennett and Tweedy as bandmates, friends, and two musical genius' trying to find a place in the unit known as Wilco. The tracks below show that even Wilco's "easy rockers"can be as beautiful and honest as "Ashes of American Flags". [...]

So, our old friends Yo La Tengo decided to host a nice little holiday concert series in honor of the Festival of Lights. On the third night the series featuredJeff Tweedy- the fearless leader of Wilco. Jeff played a solid acoustic set with favorites off just about every Wilco album. Highlights include a beautiful rendition of "Kidsmoke", an off-the-cuff version of "Shot In The Arm", and "Jesus Etc." with Yo La Tengo as the backing band. While no holiday songs were played, consider a download of the concert below, my present to you. Be Not So [...]

As we have been mentioning the last couple of months, September is stocked with a ton of great releases and next Tuesday in particular comes the mother-load with a staggering number of high profile albums dropping that day. To get you ready for "Super Tuesday" the fine folks at NPR Music have handpicked 14 of their favorites to stream on their site for free as part of their First Listen series. Among those that you can get the "try it before you buy it" preview of are the new [...]

In the third installment of our 100 Albums You Might Have Missed series we look back at the year 2002. Here are 10 great albums that fell below the mainstream rock radar and are more than deserving of some more air time. The Anniversary - Your Majesty Released: January, 2002 Although they only recorded two full length albums and were together for a little under 5 years this Kansas based emo band managed to [...]
Thanks to Paste Magazine for the help on this video, posted 3 months ago on YouTube. I know we talked about Wilco covers yesterday, but this is sort of a role reversal. Jeff, ever the crowd-pleasing performer with his playful jokes, ditches yet another classic from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot in favor of Ms. Knowles' monstrous radio/club/everywhere hit. So it's Wilco covering someone, not Someone covering Wilco. See, we vary our content, geez.

Growing up in a southern town, I generally ignored anything labeled "Country" for years, even when an "Alt" preceded it. For those reasons, I turned my nose up at Wilco's first three albums, due to their association with that venomous tag. By 2002 however, I had just discovered The Velvet Underground, Ryan Adams, and The White Stripes, artists whose country undertones were not immediately identifiable to me, save for Adams. After hearing from several sources that the leaked version of Wilco's latest, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was a must-have, I begrudgingly logged into Limewire and had [...]
...This Wilco Sandwich Shop. Yes, a Wilco themed sandwich shop in Toronto called Sky Blue Sandwich Company . First Canada wins gold in Hockey and now this. 2 - 0, Canada. Seriously thought. This is amazing. I think my breakfast sandwiches are my favorite; they include A Shot In The Arm and A.M. Too perfect. After the jump are 5 Wilco Sandwiches I'd Like To See 5 Wilco Sandwiches I'd Like To See 1. A [...]
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Jorma Kaukonen - Blue Country Heart, The Dandy Warhols - Welcome to the Monkey House...
Alright, so we just finished wrapping up the 00s, and it's left some of us (namely me) feeling a bit nostalgic for a decade that went by way too quickly. It left me thinking about things I ruined or things I succeeded in, but most of all, it's left me reflecting upon the most disappointing moments in my life. Oddly, I deflect my own animosity for my life, and turn to the world of music. Below is the five most disappointing things for me, musically, in the decade that passed. Some have a chance at redemption, but others, well, you [...]

</center< This week, we bring you Top 10 Albums from 2000-2009 lists as determined by Loud Loop Press editors and contributors. Today, Associate Editor Andy Kahn starts things off with a bang with his list for the Top 10 Albums from 2000 - 2009. 1. Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot It took a long and arduous process both creatively and commercially to ultimately produce what is the [...]

Being the young age I am (under 30) this last decade was really the one where I can intensely focus on new releases, critically analyze and find real magic in modern music. As much as I wish I was cool enough to say I bought "Slanted and Enchanted" on vinyl the day it came out or smoke a joint and sit around with my friends about to listen to "The Bends follow-up album" with everyone saying "this better not suck!" But since I never saw Nirvana in a basement and didn't hear "Loveless" until Billy Corgan recommended it I'll just stick to [...]

The HT family has grown a bit over the course of the year, so we couldn't fit everyone on the deck for last week's BBQ. We had to have the rest of the gang over this week for part two of our discussion of the Best Albums Of The '00s. So, we headed back to the store to pick up a variety of our favorite grillable food stuffs and a few cases of Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPAs for another rousing edition of At The Barbecue . [...]

It's been quite some time since the HT Crew got together for an old fashioned cookout, and frankly the ol' grill was getting a bit dusty and feeling neglected. With the summer - and for that matter the decade - rapidly coming to a close we figured we'd round up the gang, throw some large hunks of meat on the fire pit and crack open a few 21st Amendment Brew Free! Or Die IPAs for another rousing edition of At The Barbecue . It's hard [...]
Still toying with if/how to restart the blog, but I needed to check in with a link to yet another fun Collective Family (CLLCT) tribute project: Our Bad: A Michael Jackson Tribute Compilation , which you can download at that page. It features the work of few of my favorite songwriting/songsharing-obsess ed Internet (and somewhat beyond) friends, James Eric, Tinyfolk, iron like nylon and more. If you hear anything you like, you might want to spend a little time (mintues, hours, days, weeks, months?) checking out the work of those featuring their [...]
