The late Adam "MCA" Yauch wasn't just  a beyond-skilled and influential rapper. The founding member of the Beastie Boys was also a gifted bassist, filmmaker, and, in the case of this post, journalist. Many of likely know that he had a close relationship with the Tibetan people, something that's highlighted here in his interview with none other than the Dalai Lama. As someone who grew up with the Beastie Boys constantly playing on MTV, the group was one of few who left an indelible mark on my listening habits over the years. Growing up in Kentucky where the genre of choice was largely country music, the Beastie Boys essentially served as my transition in to real hip-hop. When I heard this morning that Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys had succumbed to cancer, it hit me hard. I didn't expect it, and I was surprised by my reaction. At first. There were the obvious reasons-Yauch was only 47, too young to die, and yet another reminder of our own mortality. Then there was the fact that it was cancer, a horribly ugly disease that the National Cancer Institute projects will claim the lives of more than 575,000 Americans in 2012. Back in 2009, Yauch announced that he had been diagnosed with lymph node cancer. Reports would later surface that Yauch had defeated the disease and was cancer-free, but an official conflicting statement released later asserted “while I’m grateful for all the positive energy people are sending my way, reports of my being totally cancer-free are exaggerated. Beastie Boys' Adam 'MCA' Yauch has died, according to TMZ . The Brooklyn native was 47 years old. In July 2009, Yauch revealed he had a cancerous tumor in his left parotid gland and began undergoing radiation therapy. In January 2011, Yauch issued an statement disputing reports that he was cancer free, but said "I’m continuing treatment, staying optimistic and hoping to be cancer free in the near future.” However, he remained out of the public spotlight during last spring's release of the Beastie Boy's latest LP, Hot Sauce Committee, Part Two [...]
