By Dale W. Eisinger Everyone gives the guitarists all the credit. And even when the light gets shined on the skin bashers, the focus is generally put on the past. But drummers are an integral part of bands, and in some cases, the crux. The primal draw is obvious, the thud of the heart, the trudge of the multitude. But there’s something more to drumming these days, something more cerebral and cultured. Whether it’s just plain chops, structuring a grove, getting the band to move forward, or being the centerpiece of the [...]

We're giving away a precious pair of tickets to weekend one to a lucky Big Shot reader courtesy of our friends at UMF. The jaw-dropping bill includes a lineup of stellar international DJ talent: Swedish House Mafia, Armin van Buuren, Paul van Dyk, Yeasayer, Eric [...]
Laneway is always one of scenewave's favourite festivals of the Aussie summer. It prides itself on delivering a lineup which, at the time of release, has a couple of massive headline bands, but more importantly, acts as an incredible showcase of bands tipped to hit it big in the coming year. Laneway did that incredibly this year, and I for one, had no idea who many of the acts were that were announced on the Laneway bill, but it was a joy getting into them. Some of them have now become my favourite acts. Rumours circulated throughout Brissy [...]
St Jerome’s Laneway Festival in Brisbane is fast approaching. The day’s timetable was just released. As always, the downside of a one-day festival with so many exciting acts is making the difficult decision of who to see, and who not to see. I’ve had a think about the logistics and have listed some of the acts that should be seriously considered before choosing your own personal timetable. Alt-J ∆ – 5:20-6:05 Car Park Stage Their debut An Awesome Wave was my favourite album of 2012 and they are getting their [...]
2012...what a year of music. We got new releases from favorites such as Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors, Grizzly Bear and heard new favorites in Father John Misty, Nude Beach, Tanlines, and more. Last year Earbuddy celebrated one year of existence with the best 50 albums of 2011 . However, we've grown since [...]

As we bring you our second slew of our Best Songs of 2012, keep in mind that as the numbers get closer to 1, our decisions were just that ...

I must admit my Muffin friends, I had a harder time than usual coming up with a year-end list this time. There was a LOT of good music that was put out in the '12 (does anyone even say that? Like, "Man, I haven't been back there since 'twelve." I don't think they do. Oh well, f*ck the police.) and my obsessive listening habits took me to all ends of the musical spectrum. I'll keep it short and sweet for you as I know you want to get to the jams on the ASAP, so without further ado, my favorite [...]
As our twelve days of Christmas continue, we have more on the way with another MUF writer, Michele, whose top songs of 2012 represent another great year in music. ...

"Which one of us looks tired? The one in his pyjamas? He always looks like that. But yeah, we are tired. It's a perpetual tiredness." It may not be Zachary Cole Smith that we're here referring to, though he doesn't look quite as he may in his every unblemished and faintly ethereal press shot: sprawled out, his skin soaked in bluish biro faded over whiled away afternoons. No, in the flesh, his is a far more boyish charm; a striking, childish guile. He resembles Link of The Legend of Zelda splattered in NYC thrift store garb, [...]

I tend to romanticize the fall season. Sweater enthusiast aside, I find great solace in the season's shifting energies, the blotches of oranges and reds and yellows on neighboring streets, the way everyone's so adamant in "getting together," and how there's this overall appreciation for the macabre and supernatural. I usually attend at least one 24-hour horror movie marathon, I go through at least two bags of candy corn, and everything I eat or drink has something to do with a pumpkin. I've tried to explain why I feel this way, or give credence as to what the hell this obsession [...]
The 2013 Laneway Festival lineup has landed and it is a beaaaauty. The Laneway organiser preceded their announcement by claiming that it is one of their greatest lineups to date. What do you think? Anyway, we think it's bitchin, with a lot of artists we barely know yet. From what we can tell though, these guys are good at picking emerging artists that will have well and truly be big names by the time Laneway comes around in late January. Obviously, straight off the bat, we are frothing over Yeasayer's inclusion in the lineup. Their third [...]

“The music is made first, and the interviews or photos to keep it alive come later as a necessary evil, I suppose.” -Jack White Event: MGMT at Osheaga 2012 Photographer: Stewart Wiseman What Stewart Says: "The Connecticut outfit performed a selection of their psychedelic-fueled rock to the biggest crowd of the day, and treated their many faithful to a mix of songs off of their first two albums." [...]

“The smog was heavy, my eyes were weeping from it, the sun was hot, the air stank, a regular hell is L.A.” -Jack Kerouac, The Dharma Bums Hours later, I'm still sneezing dust. Bits of dirt remain caked on my scalp. My feet scream and ache from the loose pebbles or jagged shards of mulch that crept into my shoes all weekend. Skin's on fire, eyes feel dull, and head is weak - they don't make it easy in Los Angeles, CA. Since 2004, Sean Carlson has hosted the "best weekend [...]
Yeasayer Fragrant World out now MP3 | CD | Vinyl Yeasayer have risen to prominence largely on the back of their creative, catchy songwriting; however, their embrace of risk may have been just as important of a factor. Their approach to music has been “big” in almost every sense of the word. Every album seems to be an attempt to even further expand the Yeasayer world, grabbing at moods and sounds that were never there [...]
Weekly Playlist 82 features Yeasayer, The Owls, The Good China, ∆ (alt-J), The Orwells, Howler & Ball Park Music. The Good China - We Knew That We Had To Leave Their new single "We Knew That We Had To Leave" from their forthcoming second EP. MZ Howler - Wailing (Making Out) Shows off lead singer Jordan Gatesmith's range amazingly. Ridiculously voice for a young lad, and at 1:39 he screams and it might as well be Casablancas himself, raw and powerful. Great end to a cracking tune. RG [...]

“A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men.” -Willy Wonka Bill Fay feat. Jeff Tweedy – “This World” It's been 40 years since Bill Fay's last album. You'd think after all that time he'd have a little bigger budget for this music video. Nevertheless, some Super 8 footage and a projection screen gets the job done just fine. Converge – “Aimless Arrow” Massachusetts hardcore outfit Converge may have uncovered a whole new genre of horror in their latest music video. [...]
As our new releases begin to turn towards the Fall season here in the Northeast, some pretty darn good music rears its head. But there's lots in the coming weeks, so check out our 12 Must-Have Albums This Fall to see what we're really excited about. This week, we've got a lot to look forward to. Excitement and curiosity might tell this week's tale the best. Bloc Party had a tumultuous time setting out on their own with solo projects as an emotionally spent group took time off from each other; some thought indefinitely. [...]

Brooklyn indie band Yeasayer 's new album Fragrant World is in stores today, and to celebrate the drop, we got on the horn with one of their three core members, Anand Wilder (above middle), for a game of Word Association. It was a good time, and hipped us to a bit of Yeasayer hip-hop history, like the time Jay-Z gave them a shout out on stage at Coachella, and also Anand's stance on drugs and gun control. Oh, and we found out what Anand's favorite fragrance is, though he had trouble pinpointing where to get the best [...]
Should I mention it is bangin'? Secretly Canadian, 2012 8.4 / 10.0 Representing Brooklyn as well as any other band of the moment, Yeasayer have built their following the new old fashioned way: blog buzz and weirdo noise that the kids can dance to. If it sounds like I [...]
