Listen to a sort-of supergroup featuring members of My Morning Jacket, Son Volt, Centro-Matic, and Varnaline put unrecorded Woody Guthrie lyrics to music.
There's quite a collection of Americana big dogs at work on this track: Former Uncle Tupelo co-leader and current Son Volt frontman Ja Farrar, My Morning Jacket main man Yim Yames (or, as most of us still know him, Jim James), Centro-matic leader Will Jonson, and Gob Iron guy Anders Parker, as well as the ghost of Woody Guthrie. I'm going to have to add so many tags to this post! Here's the story: Woody Guthrie's daughter Nora invited all these musicians to pick through Guthrie's notebooks of unrecorded songs, the same way Billy Bragg and Wilco did [...]

To coincide with the 100th birthday of Woody Guthrie, My Morning Jacket's Yim Yames, Son Volt's Jay Farrar, Centro-matic's Will Johnson, and Varnaline's Anders Parker have recorded an album featuring previously unrecorded Guthrie lyrics. Entitled New Multitudes , the LP comprises interpretations on 12 Guthrie compositions, most of which were written during his time in Los Angeles. Says Guthrie's daughter Nora, who sanctioned the project: "Lyric wise, it's a part of the story that is still mostly unknown. From Woody's experiences on LA's skid row to his later years in Topanga Canyon, they are uniquely intimate, and relate two distinctly emotional [...]

Here's something rather special. Remember a few years back (well, 14 to be precise), Billy Bragg and Wilco joined forces to delve deep into the Woody Guthrie archive to create music for some of the hugely influential folk icon's back catalogue. What resulted was Mermaid Avenue (volumes 1 and 2), one of the true great collaborative efforts of recent memory. So it goes, Jeff Tweedy of Wilco's old sparring partner Jay Farrar (formerly of Uncle Tupelo, currently frontman of Son Volt) has teamed up with My Morning Jacket's Yim Yames, Will Johnson (Centro-matic) and Anders Parker (Gob Iron) [...]

As we previously reported Anders Parker, Jay Farrar, Yim Yames and Will Johnson headed into the studio to record a new batch of Woody Guthrie songs (think Billy Bragg & Wilco - Mermaid Avenue) which will be released on the album New Multitudes . Now that we received an album release date of February 28, a tour has been announced. It's unclear if this ensemble is going to get a name, if they are "New Multitudes" or they are simply going to be billed individually. Also unclear [...]

Roughly two and a half years ago we reported that Jay Farrar (Uncle Tupelo/Son Volt), Jim James (MMJ) and Will Johnson (Centro-matic) had headed into the studio to a record a new batch of songs inspired by Woody Guthrie's unrecorded lyrics, a la Billy Bragg and Wilco's amazing Mermaid Avenue records. According to Paste , the trio were personally invited by Guthrie's granddaughter, Nora, to sift through the songwriter's notebooks and scratch pads to gain insight on the artist and his unfinished work. On February 28, the trio will [...]

5 Songs is a weekly series where we point out the strange, the grand, and the unique connections between our favorite songs. Let's get weird. Words by Chris A great cover in my opinion is one that alters the meaning of the song via the covering-band's performance. A really great cover is one that takes the place of the original in your mind. There are more than 5 examples of this for sure. Below [...]
From his tribute album to George Harrison. He does a great song justice.

On November 8, singer-songwriter Laura Veirs will release her first album of children's music called Tumble Bee: Laura Veirs Sings Folk Songs For Children . Inspired by the birth of their son, Veirs and her longtime producer Martine Tucker dove head first into the history of children's folk music to select songs for the 13-track album, which range from the traditional to contemporary from the likes of Woody Guthrie, Peggy Seeger and Harry Belafonte. The album will also feature an impressive array of guest spots that include Jim James, Bela Fleck and Colin [...]
When we found out Neko Case would open up for My Morning Jacket on the current leg of the HT faves' Circuital Tour, we knew we'd be in for some outstanding duets. The chanteuse and the Kentucky boys didn't disappoint with their takes on Islands In The Stream at the first few shows they played together and this past Tuesday night they debuted a righteous cover of the Tom Petty / Stevie Nicks classic Stop Draggin' My Heart Around. We've been waiting for a video worth sharing of the Stop Draggin' My Heart [...]

Over the last few years, the legendary Booker T. Jones has experienced a bit of a career renaissance thanks in part to a couple of contemporary acts backing the influential organ player on his first studio albums in roughly two decades. In 2009, it was the Southern rockers the Drive-By Truckers, who gave the assist on the Grammy winning Potato Hole , which also featured Neil Young on guitar. For the follow up, Jones upped the ante by not only nabbing The Roots as his backing band, but by also recruiting an impressive [...]

I'm psyched to see the video for "Progress" has finally dropped, that new Booker T. jam featuring Yim Yames from his latest album, The Road From Memphis . The song got sent around to the blogs a few weeks back and the video was finally released today. Check it. I may get a chance to see him in the flesh when he rolls through San Francisco in September and he's making a few random stops across the globe ahead of that... [...]

The new effort by this veteran southern rock band has some instant classics but falls short of measuring up to its other classic albums.
