More than almost any other producer, Young L (formerly of The Pack) helped bring rap music into the futuristic club realm it now inhabits. The Pack might have lacked in some qualities, but L's production was always years ahead of his time. Bringing 90s ghetto house into the fold and looking up to the UK's sense of bass weight, L formulated a West Coast sound that would morph into jerk and eventually the current "ratchet" phenomenon. Shlohmo handled the track before, but now another Bay Area resident has gotten his hands on Tomas Barfod's "Broken Glass". It's Young L , who brings his affinity for bright chopped vocal samples to the table on his upbeat, bouncy remix. I've become increasingly fond of the music of Young L, aka one fourth of the Pack and the guy behind one of last year's best mixtapes . But the Bay Area rapper/producer has been somewhat  quiet lately, likely due to the fact he was prepping his latest release. It's called Enigma Theory  and it finds Young L spitting - and sometimes Auto-Tune crooning - over his own hazy, synth-drenched instrumentals that sample the likes of Wye Oak, Sea of Bees, and Mr. Hudson. Although Lil B is the most prolific member of The Pack, Young L is easily the most consistent. The producer/rapper has been developing a lane all to himself, mostly due to the singular, full-bodied sound he's able to cultivate in all his production, and it's always something to look forward. Part of the attraction is just to see what L's been listening to - this time around I was shocked to see Wye Oak billed as samples on two tracks, I haven't gotten excited about indie samples in rap since 2008 but that one caught me off guard. Kool A.D. has already released one mixtape this year, the esoteric, almost rap free The Palm Wine Drinkard , but he already has a new one on the way. Simply called 51, the tape will drop on Tuesday and features fellow Das Racist -er Heems as well as Main Attrakionz who feature on the laid back "Ticky Tocky," which you can download below. Kool comes through with his standard non sequitur flow and Main Attrakionz stay chilling, but the real standout here is the minimal, spaced-out beat [...]
