People rarely talk of the Welsh music scene, but a lot of notable acts have come out of Wales, and not just Tom Jones. The Alarm, Hybrid, Attack! Attack!, and Manic Street Preachers are just a few of the amazing bands to emerge from Wales over the years. Bullet for My Valentine is also from Wales, but try not to hold that against the whole country. I'm sure if they would have known then they would have done something to stop them. Back in the 70s, when punk and new wave was exploding all over the [...]

January 1942: 500 Wehrmacht soldiers found themselves surrounded by the Red Army on the Eastern Front. Suffering in temperatures of –22 Fahrenheit, marching through snowdrifts that at times reached waist high, soldiers began to lie down in the snow to die. Six hours into their escape they claimed they could go no further. Commanders made [...]

"Propped carelessly on the mantlepiece was a postcard of Millais' 'Autumn Leaves': the pale light fading, the leaves burning, the trees receding, the girls' faces touched by the light." STAL - We Are Two STAL is a Parisian electrogaze project from former M83 guitar player Pierre-Marie Maulini. This is the kind of serene song with which you can float around an art gallery or museum and pretend everyone else doesn't exist; that it's just you, the works and the walls. WE ARE TWO by STAL [...]
Who needs drums! Aided by their fabulously toy-like drum machine, Young Marble Giants fashioned the basic rock essentials and tied it together with the taut wire of understatement. There's so much fury just waiting to escape those muted 8th notes and library vocals, and the band smartly it kept below the surface. This way, we listeners have to supply the mental catharsis and aftermath our damn selves. Young Marble Giants - Music For Evenings

I've been thinking a lot lately about technology. And the endtimes. Haven't we all? I've especially been thinking about how in all the old Sci Fi movies and tv shows, everyone had some kind of personal communication device. These sleek little gadgets are not unlike the actual gadgets we have today. In fact, it seems like the modern smartphone is practically modeled on something imagined as "the future" and thrown onto the props table. As if to confirm this, a rerun of Star Trek: The Next Generation came on last night. Anika and I [...]
Neutral Milk Hotel frontman Jeff Magnum is curating December's All Tomorrow's Parties festival at Butlin's, Minehead.
Welsh bands aren't typically at the top of the British music heap, but that's not because the country hasn't produced its fair share of amazing music. Young Marble Giants were one of the earliest truly post-punk bands to approach minimalism as a style. Their debut full length, 19802s Colossal Youth, is a testimony to the [...]
Typical. You wait 30 years for some Young Marble Giants copyists, then two come along at once. The first was, of course, The XX (tipped for the Mercury back in December by yours truly) though, apparently, they're just XX now. The second is LA's Warpaint; their new single Undertow is below. Download it for free. No, I'm not on their payroll. [...]
Young Marble Giants, "Final Day"

Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive , Television On top of his acclaimed acting career, ' Bored to Death ' star Jason Schwartzman is also a respected musician, first from his days with Phantom Planet and now with his own Coconut Records project, which provided the show's noir-ish theme song. As both the star and a musician, it would seem natural that Schwartzman would have a lot of input into the program's just-released [...]

A great set and interview from the uniquely mesmerising and desperately progressive Young Marble Giants , here's Red Bull Music Academy 's introduction: ' Formed in 1978, the music of [...]
Like most of you I don't remember the first time I heard the Young Marble Giants' only record Colossal Youth. When it was released in February of 1980 I was just being conceived, and I don't recall my parents ever owning this record (though I wouldn't put it passed my Dad). There's a possibility Kurt... Nicci sang a song in her friend's one-man show tonight. I couldn't make it in time to see her, but I did make it to Aroma Coffee & Tea for a delicious crispy chicken wrap! Then we went to her friend's house for some beers and snacks and conversation. Then we came home and watch what is now officially the worst movie I've ever seen in my entire life. It's called Hanger . It's about a foetus that gets aborted via coat hanger (yes, they show the coat hanger inserted into the vagina and the baby being pulled out) [...]

A nice collection of the cream of Stuart Moxham's post-Young Marble Giants work. Music - Arts - United States - Australia - Musical ensemble
Personal Best is a new compilation of the solo work of Stuart Moxham, formerly a member of 1970s post-punk band Young Marble Giants. My generation knew Young Marble Giants best through the cover of their song "Credit in the Straight World" on Hole's Live Through This album. Personal Best is a collection of new songs, B-sides, and previously unreleased material by Stuart Moxham spanning 1981-2009, and will be released on June 22nd. The music on Personal Best is an [...]
