For the past two years I've spent the majority of my summer in summer school and each year, Lollapalooza has fallen right after the end of my summer classes, serving as a huge beam of light at the end of the tunnel. As you may have noticed, things have been a little bit slower around here as of recent, in light of my three-month long internship with the LEO Weekly. The internship was a hugely satisfying experience, but my summer has been hectic and Lollapalooza just could not have come at a better time for me. The big difference between [...]

Oi! Oioioi! Magistrates - Make This Work [...]

Video: Truth ® - Magical Amount Ning nagu viimasel ajal kombeks, tuleb juutuubihitid ka tantsusaalisõbralikuks voolida: Truth ® - Magical Amount (Mad Decent Remix by DJ Sega) Ja muidugi on viisakas ka kaasa laulda: Too much nicotine might make you sick not enough you might quit and walk away Looks like they`ve got the right amount to keep those smokers smoking all the live long [...]

"Midnight Madness" is the latest single from the Chemical Brothers' new compilation album, Brotherhood , and also the tenth installment in the Electronic Battle Weapon Series. Brotherhood will be released as a two disc set on Sept. 2 in the US and of course Sept. 1 in the UK. The first disc on the compilation will include variety of some of the Chemical Brothers best singles, such as "Block Rockin Beats", "Galvanize", "Setting Sun" and "Star Guitar", alongside the new track "Keep My Composure" featuring Spank Rock. One of the tracks that I've provided [...]

On Nas’ ninth album, he takes on the hefty task of discussing race relations in America in 2008. The title of the album was changed from the actual N word to Untitled at the last minute, out of Def Jam and Universal’s fear that some retailers might not carry the album. And while the album holds an important presence in pop culture and carries a generally positive message, Untitled is a novel concept that unfortunately ended up being poorly executed. Fate Dr. Dog Park The Van If you try and tune out what you’ve heard from Dr. Dog’s previous albums, it’s hard not to come to the conclusion that their latest effort Fate makes them sound almost like an entirely new band. And I mean that in a good way; the band has improved in nearly every aspect of their music. On Fate , the radical improvements in songwriting, production, and overall creativity are all there, but so is the Dr. Dog that most of us know and love from [...]

I've got more to come from my weekend trip to Rock The Bells and Pitchfork, but let's take a break for some much needed summer dance music. The last time I wrote about the French House wunderkind Surkin was when I basically raved about his debut EP, Next of Kin, and in particular the song "White Knight Two" . Well now Surkin has managed to top himself by offering up a bonus remix of the song, which features a blend of some vocals from Chromeo. I'm pretty familiar with what little material Chromeo has released, so I think these [...]

A couple weeks ago I reviewed Beck's latest album, Modern Guilt, and as the seven inch for the lead single "Chemtrails" recently hit stores, Covert Curiosity was lucky enough to pick up a copy and spread the added euphoria that is "Vampire Voltage." I say that because I thought Modern Guilt was quite an amazing album, and as I listen to it for about the fourth time this week, it's obvious that "Vampire Voltage" would fit in right alongside most of the songs on Modern Guilt, a 30 minute trip through the heavily nuanced production of Danger Mouse and the [...]

Artwork by Siggeir M. Hafsteinsson New Sta is always something to celebrate. One of the more innovative electro artists of our time came through with an Usher & Young Jeezy remix that I really like. Suitable for any size club you can think of- one of the characteristics of Sta's style that I can think of immediately. The work that originally won my heart was the "Cherry-Cola Funk" remix that I first heard on Neon Coyote 's mixtape a little while back. I love that song. And on [...]

At a first listen, the Black Kids’ major label debut, Partie Traumatic, sounds like a bunch of rerecorded demo songs with some flashy production and a few new tracks thrown in for good measure, and that’s partly it is. Beneath the surface, however, Partie Traumatic is a well-woven collection of fun dance-rock songs, released right in time to be the soundtrack for your summer dance party. Partie Traumatic opens with “Hit The Heartbrakes,” a song rerecorded from 2007’s Wizard of Ahhhs EP, and by far one of the best Black Kids songs to date. Though the track [...]
In case you're not gonna make it to Chicago for the Pitchfork Music Festival or you're going to preoccupied with another festival taking place on the same weekend, KEXP and Pitchfork have teamed up to stream audio from this weekend's Pitchfork Music Festival. Pitchfork.TV is also streaming video for from the festival, though only certain bands were chose to be featured on the video. With regards to KEXP's stream, there is no schedule for which bands will be streaming as of yet, but I've posted a link to the Pitchfork set times, so you can probably connect [...]

Just as I was sitting down to write the third installment in this five part preview of the 2008 Rock The Bells tour, I recalled that the first time I'd ever heard Mos Def was when I was about 16. My friends and I had all just gotten their licenses and I remember riding down the freeway with a close friend in his new Rodeo on a Friday evening right when the sun was about go down. We were listening to a copy of Mos Def's Black On Both Sides that my friend's brother Matt (who just got [...]

Just a few weeks ago I found out from the Mad Decent blog that Diplo was making a new mixtape with Santogold, featuring all kinds of Santogold remixes and mashups from Diplo, XXXchange, Mumdance, Switch, Radioclit. But yesterday they announced that the mxitape, Top Ranking, was finally available on CD through Turntable Lab. Luckily, they've given us a taste of the Top Ranking through a couple of tracks that didn't quite make it to the mix. Honestly, I wasn't a huge fan of Santogold's album, but I'm definitely going to give Top Ranking a shot, just because [...]

If you've been reading this blog for a while, you'll know that I'm a big fan of the rapper/sanger known as Kid Cudi. Well, tomorrow we will finally we get the first official mixtape from Cudi titled A Kid Named Cudi . The mixtape will be available for free download on his website starting tomorrow, and if you're up in NY then you should head out to the 10 Deep x Fools Gold sponsored release party at the Red Bull Space, which will also feature appearances from 88 Keys, Nick Catchdubs and Plain Pat. Tomorrow's gonna be a big [...]

Apparently Clifford wasn't joking when he said he was already hard at work on his new album while serving time on house arrest for that weapons charge. Tracks from the new album, entitled Paper Trail , are already leaking and the cover art (pictured above) wasn't recently released as well. "Swing Your Rag" features some nice club-ready production and a chorus from Swizz Beatz, while T.I. raps about luxury accessories and spending ridiculous amounts of money on stuff that probably isn't that necessary. "What Up" is T.I.'s laid back ode to the haters, featuring some brilliant production from Drumma [...]

Now, besides (What's The Story) Morning Glory? , I've never been much of a fan of Oasis, though I know quite a few people who are longtime, dedicated fans that swear by them. But Oasis, who just make me think of an early Beatles ripoff and that time they were paradied as Smoosh on Mr. Show, are actually about to put out a new album this year, tentatively titled Dig Out Your Soul , which is eerily similar to the Chemical Brothers' 1997 techno classic Dig Your Own Hole . Anyways, I've posted this Chemical Brothers remix [...]

. On the Hold Steady’s fourth album, they exceed the expectations of critics and fans alike with a new brand of introspective and operatic indie-rock. The band is already known for their dark brand of indie-punk, taking on topics such as drug abuse and broken relationships with their previous albums. However, there has always been a brighter side to the Hold Steady, which typically unveils itself through the sarcastic, mocking humor of lead singer Craig Finn’s lyrics. On Stay Positive , they do their best to highlight their lighter side, while at the same time maintaining their [...]

So this is the second part in the continuing six part preview of Rock the Bells 2008 which I will be attending on the first date in Chicago this Saturday. The excitement is building among my group of friends, so I decided to go ahead and dedicate this second post to Method Man and Redman. These two are one of my all time favorite hip hop tag teams. Method Man and Redman set the world on fire there at the beginning of the decade, with one of the best collaborative hip hop albums ever released (Blackout), the now classic stoner [...]

Though it's been over five years since they've released their last original LP, Massive Attack looks to be in the final stages of preparation for their new album Weather Underground. Last week, I posted the BBC recording of a portion of Massive Attack's set from Glastonbury. However, the BBC only recorded about a half an hour of the set and thanks to Deaf Indie Elephants, we have nearly an hour of extra audio from the performance and yes, it contains eight new Massive Attack tracks, possibly from the forthcoming album. As with many similar groups, some bands [...]
