Hey,

Some of you probably have already recieved an email about Joseph Arthur but for those who haven't here is the latest news + an MP3.

Joseph Arthur will be releasing his latest album Nuclear Daydream on September 19th. If you aren’t familiar with Joseph’s remarkable career here is a blurb from the press release:

“His songs have been covered by the likes of Michael Stipe and Chris Martin of Coldplay. He had a generation of fans “discover” him through The O.C. He was the first American artist signed to Peter Gabriel’s World Music Label – Real World. His first four albums were some of the most critically acclaimed releases of the last ten years. For many artists that would be a full career already, but Joseph Arthur is just getting started….”

Read more in the press release:
http://www.wiredset.com/media/jarthur/release.doc

MP3: Black Lexus
http://www.lonelyastronautrecords.com/music/JosephArthur_BlackLexus.mp3

Streams (Full Album):
http://www.lonelyastronautrecords.com/

Please take a listen to the MP3 and let me know what you think.
Okay, I know a lot of you are love/hate with this artist (more love than hate, thank God), but I was really excited about this. I thought I would stand up and say congrats to my boy for beating out the New Pornographers, Broken Social Scene, and Sarah Harmer (the news story seemed to think this was a big deal, but I have no idea who that is). $20,000?! Crazy.

But what I think is most important here is how the Canadian government and other organizations in that country are doing a good job of exporting Canadian music. Is the Canadian scene better than ever? Maybe so, but it might just be that good Canadian music (besides Rush and Triumph, of course) is travelling better than before in part because of the aggressive cultural promotion policies of the Canadian government, globalization-type stuff, etc.

Do you gals/guys think that maybe America should have a critics' prize like the Mercury/Polaris prizes? Something that someone like a Sufjan would have a chance of winning? I think it'd be a great idea, but I do like awards shows.

We have a new song from Shiny Toy Guns where the guy Chad is the main singer and not the girl Carah. What Shiny Toy Guns do is they switch up the singers between each song, so it ends up with the album being pretty equally split between the two.

Hey everyone - I wanted to pass along an awesome video and catchy tune for you.

First - It's the official video for The Rapture single "Get Myself Into It" - the one that you saw making it way on some blogs wasn't the final version. So check out the REAL one here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFACpd4ow64

In this version you see little Miss Jessica Simpson joying in the fun - PS not the real one but still funny

Second - I wanted to pass along music from the band Shiny Toy Guns. This band is full of fun dancey songs and they keep things interesting by spliting the singing duties between 2 members (1 female & 1 male). Here is the first single done by the female of the group

Listen up, I have a compelling proposal for any blogger who is interested, and if I don't have your undivided attention, I'm gonna ice this mutt.

As many of you know, we are working the upcoming 40th Anniversary reissue of Pet Sounds. Lots of folks responded to my various emails about the project, but I would like to offer up the opportunity for ANY of you to guest blog, or put up a post, on the petsounds.com website, writing about any aspect or song on the album. There will, of course, be a link back to your site as well. I also have limited swagage available...you can take a look here: http://www.toolshed.biz/projects/show/330

Of course, it would be impossible to live in the U.S. (nay, the WORLD!) and not be familiar with the Beach Boys...however, this record is heads and shoulders above anything else they ever did, particularly as an ALBUM. So in any event, if you have never heard it from beginning to end in its entirety, I am afraid you should be shunned by your fellow music geeks until you have done so.

Interestingly enough, Brian Wilson—just inches away from the lunacy that would later claim him—managed to make this beautiful and amazing record while the other Boys were off touring in Japan. Imagine their surprise upon returning and finding this collection of songs (not necessarily the typical BB happy-go-lucky fare, the lyrics were written by Tony Asher instead of Mike Love) and a concept that was so far ahead of its time, that it stunned the record-buying public! (read: it didn’t sell well enough to please the suits). Tragically, before Brian Wilson could continue on this weird and wonderful trajectory to complete “Smile” he famously cracked up, and the rudderless Beach Boys reverted to the "fun in the sun" formula we are all so familiar with.

Of course, Pet Sounds is now universally recognized as a sonic masterpiece, which is why we are working with EMI on this project (even though there is not an MP3). There will, however, be a series of podcasts about each song as well as the record as a whole. I will post the schedule of when they are to go up on this thread, or you can link to them once the whole series is up. I listened the other night and they are really great. I’m also attempting to get a stream, but I’m not sure one will be available.

My goal here—despite the Clell Tickle introductory tactics—is about celebrating this record, particularly sharing a sense of community and back and forth between a classic like Pet Sounds and the indie-rock-fueled blogosphere. I am VERY interested to see what a new generation of music nerds has to say about the record (though I know many of you already consider it high up in your “best ever” lists).

Thoughts? Insults?

No offense to anyone who likes this but... I was really anticipating the new Silversun Pickups release due to a lot of hype and one track I think I heard somewhere. But after listening to it, all I can say is it sounds like Smashing Pumpkins lite. Yeah, the fuzzy guitars are nice but that dudes whiney voice sounds like a feable attempt at trying to be Billy Corgan.. What is so great about this band?

I saw a show at Sin-E this past spring with 3 great bands.... 2 of these three I and now huge fans of...

1 is Happy Hour from Michigan. www.happyhourmusic.com
2. is the Waylons. www.waylons.com

I was very impressed with both of their tunes, and I actually found Happy Hour on I-tunes as well. Good stuff, and worth a listen.
