As long as broadband and wireless are too expensive, true multimedia internet will always be stunted. The big labels, movie cartels and telcos monopolies are the biggest barrier, not technology.

We've repeatedly hammered Time Warner Cable (and its big-cable cronies) for crying to the North Carolina legislature about municipal broadband.
TWC claims it can't compete with taxpayer-backed ISPs such as Wilson,
NC's Greenlight -- and that it shouldn't have to. In fact, Greenlight
and four other municipal providers came about specifically because
corporate players refused to provide inexpensive, fast broadband. And
now that local governments have proven they can provide it, the
cable companies have cried foul, pouring hundreds of thousands of
dollars into select political pockets all the while. That's the drama so
far, and now a bill restricting municipal broadband -- mandating that
providers pay taxes similar to private companies, for example -- has
landed on the desk of Governor Bev Perdue. She won't veto the bill,
meaning it will soon become a law; for whatever it's worth (read: not
much), she also refuses to sign it. The reason? Here it is from the
horse's mouth:

I will neither sign nor veto this bill. Instead, I call on the General
Assembly to revisit this issue and adopt rules that not only promote
fairness but also allow for the greatest number of high quality and
affordable broadband options for consumers.

The legislation strikes a blow against public ISPs in a country that ranks ninth in the world for broadband adoption and download speeds. And that, apparently, is what "fair competition" looks like in the US.

http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/22/nc-governor-will-let-cable-backed-bill-restricting-municipal-bro/

The European Commission is planning to reform regulation around
collecting societies — the groups that mediate between rights-holders
and service providers — aiming to simplify cross-border music licensing.
In a press release,
the Commission notes that "new digital technologies are opening up
great opportunities for creators, consumers and businesses alike," but
acknowledges that existing laws are inadequate to deal with licensing
demands of international music stores such as Apple's iTunes.

iTunes is available in every one of the European Union's 27 member states, more than any other legal music service. But, as the New York Times points out,
it accounts for just 19 percent of recording industry revenue across
the EU. By contrast, iTunes generates almost half of equivalent revenue
in the US, according to figures from the IFPI industry body.

The proposed changes would force collecting societies to comply with
strict new standards, including a requirement to publish an annual
transparency report. The ultimate aim is to prevent situations where
societies are too disorganised or ill-equipped to engage in
international revenue collection, choosing to simply restrict
distribution instead of offering suitable licenses.

http://www.theverge.com/2012/7/11/3151286/eu-international-music-licensing-reforms

"Licensing Society" should be abolished period. They are de facto monopoly arm for 4 labels cartel, it has nothing to do with "licensing" or "Society" nevermind music. Most of these society is nothing but slush fund for political corruption, accounting manipulation or international money laundering. They are cheating on everybody. They are ruining music and major source of political corruption. Pure fraud.

Transaction should be directly between Label and digital distributor/store. Or even better artist directly to digital consumer. Things should work like computer app/video games, etc. A unit of digital file. developer, user, with one or two middle ware.

Having been running my music blog Indie Current for a year now, I have made many steps in the way of my writing skills, as well as learned many new tricks to increasing my site traffic. I have had a joy writing and finding new music everyday, and enjoyed sharing all my finds. I have received a relatively good amount of positive feedback from viewers of both my website, and YouTube page (where I have videos for songs I find exceptionally good). Despite this though, I have only seen a gradual rise in my page views. I am a constant visitor to websites like Elbo.ws and The Hype Machine, and have found that many blogs that have been accepted into these awesome services have seen major 'spikes' in the way of traffic. Having submitted my website to both, I was hoping that I would be a good candidate to be brought into their services. However, despite my long time of waiting I have not received any feedback regarding the addition to either website, (both sites of which I greatly respect).

Now, I am looking for some help. So my question goes out. For those of you that have experienced the joys of either web service, I am now wondering how to get added to these sites and how long does it take? As well I would love to hear some feedback as to what you think of my blog, and some tips to improve on what I currently have.

All your feedback is greatly appreciated,

Thanks again, Matt

http://indiecurrent.com/

Are we going to ignore the fact that the #1
song in America right now is by fun., a band who writes extremely
creative music and whose lead singer has a killer voice?
So I'm in the habit of sending out coverage links to my PR reps because they always ask for when we review artists they represent. I send one to a lady with a name beginning with the letter 'L' at Nasty Little Man. And she responded with this:

"why did you even send this to me? did you read it?

i agree w that commenter. thanks for playing"

The commenter that she was referring to disagreed with my writer's review of White Rabbits' latest album Milk Famous, and said, "I think I know why it doesn't stick in your brain..."

So now I'm wondering why do I even bother sending these people coverage links at all. They never use quotes from our site anyway, so I just assumed they were checking us off some kind of list, indicating that they got their artists coverage. Anyone else ever have an experience like this? What are your thoughts?

Ok, my curiosity won over my paranoia conspiracy and I decided to check out google.play new store. I want to see what company the size of google would do if they want to sell something. boy was I disappointed. Whatta P.O.S store. Here I thought they only need my profile + 2 songs to create a credible song list offer and snatch my soul. hah... The graphic design is not enticing. content arrangements are all wrong. no thematic guide through the store. It's endless listing of bunch of stuff. This is K-mart/we just don't care/ do something-anything type of look. I don't expect Italian or British conceptual design here, just a site pleasant to browse items. This is walmart warehouse level of 'not caring'.

Do they actually sell anything?

- front page looks like gas station apartment rent booklet meets grocery stores sunday coupons page., in black .. garg.

- The music section is completely unapproachable in term of visual design. It's repulsive. No intelligence whatsoever. It's redundant oversize text over irrelevant images... What are they? who are they? It's avalanche of random data all trying to scream.. My brain shut down immediately... nevermind all the screaming text of "new hip-hop" "Play the hits" "$3.99 top albums".. etc. ugh...

- The book store front page comes with jingle like "now available as ebooks, starting at $5.99 "... talking about sniffing glue level of stupidity. It's an e-store! I presume they only sell e-stuff. (wouldn't a sweet short quote makes a better punch? oh that's right,..you really have to read and knows a)what your audience thinks is a nice sales hook. b)you actually have to read the book and c) able to connect the two.)

- the movies all ends up looking cheap...kinda like about to close shaddy blockbuster store. dim, shouting bold texts, dusty, give you germ or something.....you know they are all crappy stuff. Why waste 2 hrs of your life watching?

did your mom help you design this the night before deadline or did you come up with this marvel of below par barf yourself?

(picture of market, but same design as google.play)
----------------------------

Google. Please jump off the bridge and end the miserable experiment already. stop making the internet uglier as it is...
You just don't care and it shows.

Spend some money on inspiring / memorable design .. (why would anybody shop in store done by people who doesn't care?)

PS. and fix that barf ugly music player. It's completely uninspiring. The design doesn't work very well for tablet. So many computing power and design experience to learn from and that's the best player design you come up with ...
