Taiwan-based Wintek will be the panel supplier of Apple's new iPod video, according to sources at upstream suppliers. Apple is set to launch a next-generation iPod video in August with the new products featuring a touch screen panel similar to the iPhone, the sources noted.

note there aren't that many maker making capacitive touch screen.
also: obviously an iPod with touch screen wouldn't just for "flipping songs" since a cheapo button will do just fine. So hopefully there is some interesting feature in iPod that will be beneficial to mp3 blogging. (aka, holding super large database + extra text information, new UI to control it all)

The patent Apple dont want you to see cause it's skim off the fact it'll have el-cheapo edition of iPhone.

that would be mp3 playing phone number..what? 12 in the market?

And Apple's third?  Or do they not count the ROKR since they basically killed it, leaving Motorola to swing in the breeze?
  1.
    The ROKR sucked so much.

Rokr was about apple stealing/dicking moto for propiretary code (wireless driver). Apple can't make their own phone without those drivers.

old news. Microsoft did that to to smaller company and transfer the code to HTC. Dog eats dog world.

motorola is going the way of nokia/erickson.  has been. Their low end hardware is too expensive compared to cheapie taiwanese/chinese brand, but they can't compete in high end phone, cause they don't know how to write Operating system. They probably get snuffed soon enough in consumer phone market and will mostly do wireless networking gear and military stuff.

moto already say they won't make profit in '07.

In the meantime the biggest market in the planet is moving to create their own standard away from moto/qualcom/broadcom stuff. (greater china, Korea, jpn) So, unless we have sudden 6+% GDP growth and everybody and their dog is buying moto's phone, moto is effed big time. Cause their phone is kinda not edgy anymore.

I love my Zen.  16 GB doesn't quite do it for me, but it's a step in the right direction.  I've had the M Vision for about a year and four months.  By the time I'm ready for a new player I'm hoping flash players are up to about 60 GB.  No reason not to believe as far as I can tell.

If the new iPod can be hacked and has big processor, it would be the ultimate PDA. Otherwise, Samsung new player is much more elegant.

    http://www.digitimes.com/systems/a20070903PD203.html

The new iPod video will also come with a wide-screen panel, high storage capacity and Wi-Fi connectivity, the sources indicated. In addition, the new iPod video is expected to be powered by NAND flash, instead of a hard disk drive (HDD).

oh wi-fi --- nice. plus browser.
  2.
This is going to piss off a lot of iPhone users, I think.  It's basically an iPhone without the phone part or the email.
  3.
What about the 160GB model?  That thing is priced to sell!
  4.
Just announced, it'll be 8gb and 16gb for the Touch.

I'm not going to get it then.  No way I can pick only 16 GB of music to put on there.  Once they hit AT LEAST 60 gb, I'll get one.

i don't know paul. i bought mine for the phone/email, the ipod was an added bonus. i don't think people are buying the iphone for the ipod feature? good thing they did it now rather than later to give people more choice --- i thought they'd wait at least another three months before announcing this.

    160 gb ipod --- omigoodness. that's why i have a laptop.

yeah, def doesn't replace the ipod "classic" but if i was in the market for a nano i'd think twice and probably spend the extra cash on a touch.

but i'm not buying any of it. haha.

no SD slot?  what is wrong with Apple anyway?

btw, is iPhone totally hackable yet? There is no app out there except few crummy ware.  And the chinese already start selling PMP at $100-200 with 2 inch screen. I bet they can clone that iPhone within 2 months and make it better and cheaper too. (ie. hackable)

squashed the iphone has been hacked for weeks now. lots of software coming out for it and goodies. of course... apple is likely to release firmware to break all that so its all a little sketchy.

Hey, don't dis those cheapo chinese PMP player. (afterall, they assemble those iphone (foxxcon))

Those cheapo chinese PMP are the future, they have increasingly more powerfull processor than even iPhone. that means somebody then will soon hack it and install linux... then it's all over.

    BARF.

That's actually a cool idea, but too limited in scope. Fuck Starbucks, they should partner up with radio stations. They would make an INCREDIBLE amount of money if people could buy songs immediately that they hear on the radio.

"So we're going to do something about that today. We're on track to ship our 1mth iPhone this month -- to get ready for the holidays here's what we're going to do. It's clear clear customers want the 8GB model -- it's not going to sell for 599 anymore. "Starting today effective immediately, we're pricing it at just $399."

paul, that's gonna make a bunch of iphone owners mad. $200 price break??? jesus.

anybody notice Apple is now knee deep in PDA market? hah, I predicted this one 5 years ago after their second generation iPod. iTouch is a little crippled tho. They should have added GPS

Somewhere in microsoft campus, a management team is in panic mode.  Cause Google and Apple are about to eat microsoft alive.

gps --- that will have to wait for generation 2. if they put that in the ipod touch it would eat iphone sales and they're not about to add a hardware update to the iphone so soon...

i'm surprised they're keeping the ipod "classic" alive. i guess they're not ready to let go...

annnnd the new nano is puketastic. though the commercial with feist is better than the dancing shadows.
  6.
I like the new Nano.  It's so tiny.
  7.
I think I'll be getting a 160GB iPod classic within the next two weeks.  I've been looking to get one finally, and with that much space at that price, I don't think it can be beat.  I'd love to have the iPod Touch just to have a tiny internet browser that we can put on the coffee table.  Emily wants one bad, so she might pick one up very soon, I think I'll wait till either they get bigger or maybe after christmas.  I think they just pissed off a bunch of iPhone users in lots of different ways.  To be able to surf the internet for small shit like TV times or to look up something on wikipedia from something so small is a HUGE draw for me.  Toss in ITMS on the fly and 16GB of storage, and it's a really tough thing to pass up.  If I didn't need way more storage, like Paul, I'd be all over it.  But the draw of being able to carry around all of my music and then some in my pocket is a BIG motivator.
  8.
I like the wifi a lot.

Although it'd be pretty good at my university where there's wifi absolutely everywhere.

I've been able to just get my itunes library to <16 GB. But i'm not spending that much just to have wikipedia in my pocket.

    But me still wanty.

What would be really cool is if you could strip the iPod OS off of the 160 GB model and run some PlaysForSure on it, sign up for Rhapsody and Have a new 40,000 songs every month.   Not bad.  Think we could get these guys on it?

Stevie hates the blog. haa haa...  (what did I tell ya. Everybody in the end wants control.) I love this. I can't wait until the major label figure out what Steve plans is and they are not invited.

(I am still surprise how any apple fans can't see/refuse to see this yet. You don't own your device. Steve lets you use your device to do certain thing. that's it. )

    http://blog.wired.com/music/2007/09/apples-ipod-tou.html

Apple confirmed with Listening Post that the iPod Touch will not allow users to download MP3s from web pages over its WiFi connection, so devotees of MP3 blogs will need to stick to the old plan: download to computer, import into iTunes, and sync to iPod.

However, streaming radio is still a strong possibility for the iPod Touch, and could become a bigger part of the iPhone too.  When asked whether the iPod Touch would handle streaming radio from either Apple or third party sites such as Pandora and Seeqpod, my Apple contact told me there are "no announced plans."

    Apple to Reduce iPod Production

The subprime mortgage crisis is taking its toll on http://www.pmptoday.com/industry-news/apple-quarterly-finacial-report-a-bazillion-iphones-a-quadzillion-ipods-sold/">the ever-popular iPod. Apple is anticipating slower sales this year and has asked its suppliers to slow down iPod production. The information comes from the Banc of America. Production cuts are expected to be between 10% and 20% compared to early January and 30% compared to December. “Current production expectations for March imply a 5–10% year-over-year unit decline, versus our expectation for 5% year-over-year unit sales growth during the March quarter, likely implying a continuing inventory rightsizing and sales sluggishness,” says analyst Scott Craig.

(yeah right, blame is all on subprime. The damned thing is overpriced!)

well 2% of their latest number is still pretty big numbers. It's just that they are not growing as fast anymore.
