    http://wearehunted.com/

The site has been mentioned in other threads but I thought a general discussion about it would be appropriate. I checked it out and didn't think much, then I clicked an artist link and saw how much data and interesting pages are there, I even found my sites aggregated page. It would be interesting to know what all the shades of pink indicate on the charts. So is it worth adding to the list of quality music blog aggregating sites, despite its minimalistic front page?

    List so far?
    -- elbo.ws
    -- hypem.com
    -- mog.com
    -- wearehunted.com ?

Hmm, to be honest, I really like the look and overall layout. It's not as functional as elbo, hypem, or mog, but my guess is that it's fairly new. It has potential.

I have to wonder how they come up with their song chart (http://wearehunted.com/)... their artist chart (http://wearehunted.com/artists/1/) looks a lot like Hype's or Elbo.ws' but their song chart seems to be all over the place. Nice change, I suppose.

    i thought this was interesting:

"We aggregate social networks, forums, music blogs, Torrents, P2P Networks and Twitter to develop a daily chart of the 99 most popular songs online."

they track torrents and p2p, both of which elbows and hype m intentionally leave out.

"elbows" or "elbo.ws" never elbo   :-o

I think it's neat, but "chart" seems like a stretch. Today's #2 is C.R.E.A.M and, while I agree Wu-tang should be atop every chart, I don't see the reason for it being there. At best, I think it's a list of songs to pick through which, in itself, is fun to do.

It also hotlinks the mp3s instead of linking back to the post.

ewww... not cool, it is really blatent too.

Hosting 297 tracks (99 * day, week, month) to support the front page wouldn't be too difficult either.
And not linking to the site is a slap in the face.

Some tracks are pulled from YouTube too, similar to http://songza.com/

"It also hotlinks the mp3s instead of linking back to the post. "

Sorry to burst your little bloggville bubble here but the point of the site is to track the top songs, not the blogs who posted them. There is more to music blogging than getting traffic from music aggregaters.

Other than that, the site is a bit blunt with posting material from torrents and p2p but having Twitter as a source is pretty cool. I really like the layout of the site. It's focused on content and it doesn't look bad showing it.

(at the quotation marks: I couldn't get a quote to work for the life of me)

Hmm, well you could always set up your own system to track the top songs and not necessarily steal other bloggers bandwidth. Sorry am I on some high horse? Just saying.

The layout is nice but come on, it's not hard to have a system to add the mp3s to your own server if you can aggregate the posts to begin with.
  3.
Yeah that's true, it would be nice for them to mirror it. I didn't think about that.

Does improving the site include NOT hotlinking files?
  6.
this conversation reminds me of the comments here: http://stereogum.com/archives/the-hype-machine_001449.html (almost 4 years ago!!!)

    Thanks for the welcome Brandon..

merzmars.. we definitely need to sort this out as a priority. We need to support everyone who supports us.

We didn't expect the response we got when we launched the site, so we have been caught a little of guard.
You can see that in the volatility of our chart as Brandon points out above.
There is a lot of new tech behind our site and we are working to bed it in.

    From wearehunted's "about" page.....
"If you like the music featured on We are Hunted, support the artist and buy their music on iTunes."

choice or contract? cause inquiring minds and all... and if contract it would be nice to be explicit so that us iTunes (or FUCKtunes, as it's called in my household, 'xuse me) avoiders could make our choice clear.

the minute they host the mp3's on their servers they put a target on their back for the riaa. So don't hold your breath.
  9.
The ui is badass, I love it.

They don't actually have any data on the site other than the info that comes from blogs. From what I understand, the p2p/twitter stuff is coming, though it cracks me up how they got so much attention for something that's not anywhere on the site. Sneaky :)
  10.
hey anthony ... glad you like the ui... the torrent and twitter tracking is being used in calculating the charts.. we are not surfacing it on the front end at the moment.. we probably can if people find it interesting..
  11.
    ^^ yup.
  12.
They're getting a lot of love on twitter, apparently they're not just another penny ante aggregator riding hype/elbo.ws coat tails.
  13.
I guess I always want to know why something is in some kind of charts, pages, etc. This kind of transparency is what drives the hype machine.

When someone tells me "oh we have this cool way of crawling X to get charts Y" it's hard to take seriously especially now that I know about the limitations of many of those processes.

  15.
    yeah T-swift!
  16.
Heh, I did a search for "Kingsbury Manx" to see if my site showed up, and under "Related Acts" it had Judas Priest. I think that bit of code needs a touch more work.

But, very nice site design. Rather too many photos of Conor Oberst for my liking though...
  17.
    Good catch loftandlost..

The related artists list on our news pages is probably incorrectly labelled.

It would more better described as 'Artists most frequently mentioned in the same articles as this Artist'... but we figured 'Related Artists' was simpler.

In the example you gave, 'Kingsbury Manx' appears in articles that also mention 'Judas Priest'. Not as often as it appears in articles that also mention 'Vic Chestnut' or 'Megafun' which is why they appear higher in the list.

We are working on a better approach to related artists that we aim to release in the next few weeks. This approach uses collaborative filtering based on the types of artists people are listening to rather than those that bloggers write about.

Also as an update to my previous post, he is our current twitter chart, one of the sources we use to create the main chart on We Are Hunted.

    Enjoy! Stephen

    Just got this email.

    Hi Pretty Much Amazing,

We have been playing with some code to create music charts for individual publishers like Pretty Much Amazing.

I wanted to share this with you as your publication has been one of the news sources we have been testing with.

We analyzed the news we have collected from your site in recent months, here are the results.

    Top Artists Today

A chart of the artists most mentioned in Pretty Much Amazing recently.

    http://wearehunted.com/chart/pretty_much_amazing/artists/1/

    Top Artists All Time

A chart of the artists most mentioned in Pretty Much Amazing this year.

    http://wearehunted.com/chart/pretty_much_amazing/artists/365/

    Top Singles Today

A chart of the highest ranked singles from the artists most mentioned in Pretty Much Amazing recently.

    http://wearehunted.com/chart/pretty_much_amazing/singles/1/

    Top Singles This Month

A chart of the highest ranked singles from the artists most mentioned in The Pretty Much Amazing this month.

    http://wearehunted.com/chart/pretty_much_amazing/singles/30/

Pretty Much Amazing on We Are Hunted

    A shortcut to your chart.

    http://wearehunted.com/chart/pretty_much_amazing/

The full index of articles from Pretty Much Amazing.

    http://wearehunted.com/provider/pretty_much_amazing/70/

    How it Works

    1. We collect the articles you post via RSS from your site.

    2. We analyze these articles using our tech to discover which artists you are talking about most.

    3. We do some math, combine your data with other charts we index to create your individual chart.

    How it could be improved

The artwork for your brand could be improved greatly with your assistance.

We think the artist charts are reflecting well enough what you are writing about.

The singles chart could be greatly improved if you told us each week what you are really listening to.

We are working on widgets that publishers can add to their site to include the latest charts.

We could create a simple interface that you could log into at any time to update your chart.

Let me know if you are interested in something like that.

    Problems

This isn't ready for public consumption. Please keep this to your close friends and family :)

Some of the data is a bit rough. It is an imperfect science but we are learning where the holes are.

    Thanks for your time.

    EarsoftheBeholder... my apologies ...

I was aware of the problem importing your articles.
We were working on the problem for several weeks but we couldn't crack it.
We import over 100,000 feeds each day without error so this one had us a bit stumped.
Anyhow changes were made at our end and your feed started importing ok 3 days ago.

You can see your articles here.

    http://wearehunted.com/provider/Ears_of_the_beholder/1303/

I will send through your chart (like the one above) very soon.
We still need to do the artwork, but your chart will look something like this.

Thanks for again for publishing great stuff.

  24.
The Twitter charts mostly seem to reflect artists who are in the NEWS (not necessarily with new music, and honestly I doubt in many cases being listened to). Queen, for instance, sorta "broke up" recently - hence their high placing. I am highly skeptical that people were listening to them a ton more in the past 30 days!

But it's really weird that Michael Jackson doesn't place - enough that I suspect there are omissions in the scraping software...
  25.
    Hi sean gramaphone...

    Interesting observation. Thanks for advice.

I should provide some more background on how we do twitter charts.
Our chart does not measure which artists are mentioned most on twitter.
We try to measure which artists are being played the most by people on twitter.
We do not seek to identify new artists. We don't think twitter alone can do that effectively.
We are strong on mainstream pop and rock, moderate on indie. Probably weak on most other genres. We are working on it.

To me it is not surprising that Queen is being listened to a lot if it recently had major global media coverage.
If an artist is in the news, people will listen to that artist more than if they weren't.

Yeah michael jackson is an obvious bug.. thanks for catching that.. i will investigate.

-- update -- michael jackson bug fixed.. typo in the filter for the world's most popular artist!

It's a problem any aggregator is going to suffer from, unless they start editorialising by excluding blogs they don't like.  If you index stuff, and as blogs become more mainstream, then basically you are going to end up with a giant list of shit.  Which is fine if your goal is document what music is popular and what isn't, but less fine if you have any sort of personal commitment to grass-roots or independent music scenes.

The sums are pretty basic.  Massive readership requires populism, which requires Lady Gaga and all that garbage.  If you want to remain 'indie', which I personally do, then you simply have to accept the fact that this will mean less readership.  Alternative is called alternative for a very good reason.

It's no great sacrifice, but it really is a personal strategic decision, both for us and the likes of elbo.ws and hype and hunted and so on.  If you want to be popular then the kind of distinctions between quality and populism have to be abandoned.

I am happy enough to remain niche forever, but I do not kid myself that I can ever become huge, important or profitable by doing so.

Noticed that some of the leaked/new stuff now redirects to YouTube. Interesting alternative to streaming.
  33.
Yeah we are linking out to YouTube now for mainsteam tracks.
We are talking to streaming music services to work out the best way forward.

What has been surprising is that most people don't seem to care that they cannot play the tracks.
