Tips for dealing with ALL THIS MUSIC?
  • I am wondering how some of you guys sort through/deal with/process all of the potentially great music that you download every day from other mp3 blogs. I know we all try to keep current on what everyone else is posting, and potentially there are a thousand great new songs out there on any given day.

But once I download it, I have SO MUCH stuff that I get overwhelmed. How do you process incoming new stuff for your consideration? A playlist? A certain time each day when you slog through it all? Do you listen as you go along and delete immediately if you don't like it? What about all the emails from bands asking you to love them? :)

I know this may be a weird question, but surely a common concern. I find that I often have a "backlog" of stuff I have downloaded and meant to listen to, but forgotten to and then I forget where I got it, why I should like it, etc etc.

    Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions? Let's chat.

  • Hi Heather!

Well my blog-partner and I have some carefully selected blogs under eye but we do keep downloading from various sites and unsigned bands' myspace accounts.

Personally,I do hear tracks while dwl and so I have a "rough" opinion on whether they worth being suggested. And I should not forget my commute time with my iPod shuffling all the new tunes I got last night!

But,that's more of a retorical question you make, right?Coz,we gonna keep dwling as freaks no matter what...

Just visited your blog & saw your other retorical q's...I also saw that Violent Femmes are coming to Greece! Now that's nice!

  • I use a pretty random process - I download loads and don't delete anything - When I'm looking for bands to blog about I look through recently added files on itunes and if I see a file I liked when I first heard it, I listen to it again.

It'll fill up my hardrive pretty quickly but I haven't found another method although - downloading stuff to separate folder then deleting the stuff I don't listen to occasionally is a pretty good idea but I'm hesitant as I often hear a band again a few months after I download a track of theirs so it's good to have it to hear immediatly.
  • I've found it important to develop focus instead of comprehensiveness. The pressure to somehow cover the entire scene or emulate extensive music blogs is real and can be a force of confusion for the content. By choosing one item/topic/theme of particular interest and developing it in a direction that is unique, I can digest the masses of music in a constructive way instead of being a series of linked mp3s.
  • I generally stream tracks, rather than download them. I don't collect a bunch. Generally, I have friends telling me to check stuff out, and that helps float good stuff to the top of my listen pile. It helps to be well connected in your niche.
  • easy, whatever i like gets linked in the blog and if it's something i downloaded a long time ago and forgot where it came from (or if my friends emailed it to me), i post it on the blog.

i download a lot because i have an ipod to fill. heh.
