ATTN: Brandon - Using Vanilla
  • Brandon,

    (or anyone else)

I would like to host a vanilla forum on my blog, at a blogspot adresss. I do not have my own domain, nor can I use FTP.

Does anyone know if it is possible to set up a Vanilla forum at blogspot without your own domain or hosting?

p.s. this forum is going to be used for my local community.
  • you need your own hosting w/ php & mysql
  • any other suggestions on how I might host a forum via my blog?
  • there's a few free forum hosting services, but I don't recommend them
  • If you google "Free message board," there's quite a few options.  None are really as good as hosting your own though.
  • it wont be available at your blogspot address.

it'll have to be somewhere else unless you get your own hosting.
  • Why not get your own domain?

They are only $7/yr from Godaddy (so under 4 quid for us brits). ablogsoup.com isn't available, but you could get the .net or .org or whatever country tld would work (eg .co.uk for me).

Even if you decide not to get your own hosting ($5+/month), a domain is always a good plan as if you fall out of love with blogger at anytime you can quickly move to another service and take your users with you.

I would second the warning against hosted forums though

  • tim, i did actually have that domain, ablogsoup.com, but did not renew it this year. I have thought about getting the .net or .org though. thing is, i have no idea how to use ftp, and attempting to learn did no good. I just had no idea how to use ftp, i just couldnt figure it out.

    thanks for the suggestions,

    m.
