weirdest place you ever heard decent music
  • so today i was in t.j. maxx, a discount department store of sorts, and i heard death cab for cutie over the loudspeakers. not too long ago i was in the pathmark, a grocery store, and i heard gomez.

but the weirdest was probably at disney world when we got off the test-track ride at epcot and in the gift shop they were playing "punkrocker" by teddybears.
  • i remember hearing belle & sebastian over the speakers in the gap in like 1999 and freaking out. i think it was made weirder by the fact that it was 'string bean jean', which at that point in time was an import-only b-side (?!)
  • Speaking of Gap, I heard the Legends 'He Knows The Sun' in their Manhattan branch last year. It sounded so epic i bought a t-shirt.
  • I often hear some good tunes in Forever XXI whenever I'm waiting outside the dressing room for Emily :-p
  • In between innings at a recent Red Sox game, they played "Dreaming of Me" by Depeche Mode, and then "Happy Hour" by the Housemartins.  Totally surreal.
  • The vet! Our vet subscribes to satellite radio and leaves it on some indie/alt-rock channel. I've heard the White Stripes in his waiting room.
  • I heard Scott H. Biram at a resturant one night.
  • the radio
  • "Love Will Tear Us Apart Again," 2:30am, Shop-Rite.

    shenanigans.
  • ryan adams at some thai restaurant in tampa.  jose gonzalez at the gym.  weird.
  • A good friend of mine use to work at American Eagle and she would always tell me about hearing weird b-sides and demos of unknown indie artists.
  • American Eagle used to do compilation CDs in the early 90s that were really excellent - I think the first time I heard Sparklehorse was on one of their free CDs.
  • That would make sense, she was working there during that time.

I wonder if they still do stuff like that...?
  • i know that they post the gap's playlists on itunes, i think banana republic, too. that would be a cool job to have, to be the playlist maker for stores' music. it must be a service they subscribe to.
  • I remember hearing Spoon during a montage on Queer Eye (did I admit something there?  Yes, I used to watch that).  Also, when the Mrs and I started having wee ones, I was shocked by the quality of some children's music.  I was expecting "Barney says, Let's Dance!" but it turns out the people who make these CDs understand who buys them.  Shifty bastards.  Suckered way more cash out of me than I'd care to admit.

I have to agree--that's my dream job, for sure.

now if we were entrepreneurial hotshots, we would be scrambling to figure out how to market that idea . . . ;-)

  • My brother in law's sister works for Music choice, which provides all the music for those digital cable channels and also does the piped in music you're talking about.  Unfortunately, she's in Fort Wayne, IN, and there is little chance of me getting there.  I'd rather blog from Boston (no offense to any Hoosiers, of course).

isn't that something one could do remotely, though? through the tubes of the internets? ;-)

  • Not sure, honestly.  My wife's family was in love with the idea for a while as I occasionally make CDs for people based on what they like, but I've never really pursued it (nephew Mikey once asked if Uncle Greg still has that job where he makes CDs.  In an online, non-plastic-coated-metal way, yes.  It still doesn't pay the mortgage).  I imagine the population of wherever they are is rich with music lovers capable of curating (there's that word again) 30 stations (hair metal, tejano and "sounds of the season" included) just as well/better than I. Plus, I've built this career in something else.  I have my outlet and it's under my control.  Now I just need the time to do it justice (he says two days late on his Tuesday podcast).

On an unrelated note, I'm feeling very paranthetical today (you might have noticed).
  • I think you might be right Greg.  Mrs. Toad mentioned this to me as a possibility and while I think I would be excellent at producing slightly off-kilter indie playlists I think that's all I'd be able to produce.  Depth of knowledge yes, breadth no.
  • i guess we're what you might call "niche playlist makers." ;-)
