vinyl: seven records and counting. cd: lost track, but i estimate it at about 600 cds (i buy a lot at shows, record shops and online) itunes: 2841 songs: eight days and twelve and a half gigs. (i have a 30gig 5G ipod.)
ij'm getting there. keep in mind i moved a lot and had to give up a lot of stuff and now that i'm set where i'm at, i'm building up my collection again!
Vinyl: Upwards of 3000 LPs, singles and 12"s that are taking over my flat. My record collection owns me right now. Most played record (for my shame) is Kind of Blue.
CDs: 400-500 I would imagine, quite a lot at work. Most Played CD is probably a Billie Holiday greatest one that never offends anyone else in the office!
MP3s: You could fit them all on one DVD-R at the moment (3 or 4 GB)... I delete regularly. The songs from the new Calexico album and 'Rabbit Fur Coat' are getting the most play right now.
Vinyl: I just started re-collecting vinyl last year after selling and giving away my entire collection when I moved west about eight years ago. About 100 discs, mostly 7" singles.
CDs: a lot, but the number is staying pretty constant, as I've been weeding out the discs I rarely listen to and giving them away (along with 95% of the discs sent my way).
Wow, some impressive collections here. Most of my songs are on CD, so:
CDs: Last count was around 1000; probably a little more by now
Tapes: Lots of crappy concert recordings
Vinyl: Mostly just oddities...Maybe 20?
MP3: Currently 3932 songs
I've told myself that my mp3s will never be more than I can hold on my iPod, so that's pretty much the max until I get a bigger mp3 player (currently 20GB). This keeps me deleting stuff I don't enjoy listening to anymore.
yeah, crossover is a good point.. the large iTunes collection is all my vinyl and CD's converted digitally. I don't really go around the blogosphere to download mp3's. I buy all my music and like to share some of the high points with the blogosphere..... Probably only 50-100 tracks on the iTunes are ones I downloaded from other bloggers.. I buy so much music every week, sometimes I don't listen to it for a month or more later....
I have been collecting music primarily in MP3 format since 1997, and I've lost a considerable portion of my formerly glorious MP3 collection, along with about 20 vinyl albums (including Led Zeppelin IV, with the original and fantastic artwork, sigh).
A few years ago I undertook the task of digizing all of my cds. I am not an organized person. I've always had lots of cds, and always had stacks of cases, books of cds, stacks of cds, all sorts of chaos.
I ripped about 1200 discs and haven't touched one since. Occasionally I will burn something for the car or whatever, but the cases/discs were in such bad condition that there was no reason to sell them. My old bedroom at my folks house still has floor to ceiling stacks of naked discs -- long forgotten.
I had been working on pairing down my mp3 collection. At it's peak I was around 40k tracks and near 100gb take or leave. Since then I've started trying to assess what "new" music I have any interest in keeping and what "old" music I want hanging around for the same reason. Then I suffered a major hd crash and lost everything from the last 3 years -- only because I had an old version of my collection on another drive.
Currently I'm at around 18,000 tracks, I believe. Much of that is self ripped and it's all full albums. I also have around 100 lps but my record player can no longer play at a steady speed, so those are worthless to me.
Now my DVD collection -- whole different story. I'm actually at the point where I have to give away/sell movies just to make room for new stuff.
My best estimate for cds is around 800. I have approiximately 40 G in digital music. There's some overlap there since I almost exclusively listen to digital copies these days. If I buy a cd or receive one, they immeidately get converted to digital. I only listen to cds in the car. My cds are terribly unorganized. If I need to find a cd to rip it'll take me a good 10 to 15 minutes.
Around 1500 CDs, 1-100GB of music (I tend to download a bunch and then delete stuff as I buy it if I like it), and about 300 LPs... in various locations.
