Organizing Your RSS Feeds + Favorite Feedreaders
  • Here's a question that is puzzling me.  I love the convenience of RSS Feeds, but for some reason, I run into problems with using them.

I have had nothing but problems with RSS readers crashing and clogging up my computers for the last several years.  I want to know if you have any favorite feedreaders, how you like to organize your feeds, and if you know of a way to convert a blogroll to a list of the RSS feeds associated with those links?

    Thanks.
  • I use Google Reader.  I used to use sage but machine-based readers are a pain in the ass when going from work to home.  web-based is much easier.

I just organize them into two sections - news feeds (google news searches) and site feeds.  When it gets too large, I may have to reorganize but until then, that works for me.

And no idea about the blogroll conversion, though that'd be handy.
  • I use Netvibes for mine - only started using one at all a couple of months ago and now really rely on it. I've got me gmail and uni email accounts through it, all the blogs (music and others that I read), forum updates, ebay and podcasts set up through it. I'm very happy - and it being web based means I can access it from anywhere as well - which is useful.

As for adding your blogroll...I don't know about doing it en masse, but in Netvibes if you just add the url of a site, then it will give you the feed options of that site to choose from automatically.
  • i use google reader, also -- for the most part, all the blogs on my blogroll are on there. it's not exactly automatic, but google reader does detect the feed for you.

     indeed.

  • google reader & EJ - nice job on that last woxy bit...somehow I knew you couldn't pass up including DJ Day
  • i use bloglines.  i've never tried anything else.  my feeds are organized alphabetically.
  • Google reader has been great for me.
  • I second the Bloglines recommendation. Bloglines loads faster and doesn't crash as much as other readers I've tried (including Google).

  • bloglines, bloglines, bloglines.

     so good.
  • i fourth bloglines. it's really good at handling a LOT of feeds!

any of you using the beta version? for some reason i keep forgetting to switch out my bookmark and have just used the older version.
  • i used to use bloglines, but then i decided that google wasn't already capturing enough of my personal information...clearly my move to google reader was inevitable.
  • I use NetNewsWire on my MacBook. It's now free and I've used it for years with very few complaints.

I am planning to migrate my feeds in the future, though, to Google Reader for the reason Frank mentioned (portability)
  • One upon a time..... I started with Bloglines... then Google Reader, then NetNewsWire (cracked)..... then Google Reader... then Bloglines Beta was released and that's what I'm using now...

BUT... recently NetNewsWire changed to freeware, so you'll know how this story ends.... :)
  • On a related note, how many times has the new Tapes N Tapes come across your feed reader today?  I'm at 5.

     LOL!!!!

Man, I think nothing is worst than ANOTHER Vampire Weekend post in my feed reader.

well, I'm going to watch Valentines' episode of Morning Becomes Eclectic..................................................

  • Bloglines will be shut down on October 1st. I'm probably the only person who still uses an online feed reader, but any new recommendations? Google Reader annoys me, so I'm looking for something similar to Bloglines.
  • Word. I used (and liked) Bloglines as well. Switched to Google Reader but haven't really gotten into yet. I love Twitter but it doesn't entirely replace a feed reader...
  • Looks like Bloglines will live on after all. :) According to Ask.com (who currently operates Bloglines), they are transferring the service to MerchantCircle, which is owned by the same company as Ask.com. So far MC promises that Bloglines will continue as is for existing users. I hope so, because my Google Reader and Twitter accounts haven't been updating properly for months.
  • I use Bloglovin', haven't tried anything else, but I like it?

I more often just go to the blog directly, just have a bookmark folder with my favourites in it.
  • I used to use IE's one because that was simple and convenient but now I use Chrome as my browser, I've been using Google Reader. Unlike many, I actually like it when a feed is limited to say the 200 most recent unread items in a reader, which IE allowed you to do but GR doesn't seem to do. Please correct me if I'm wrong though.

In the meantime, can anyone recommend another online feed reader that allows you to limit the number of items from an individual feed?
  • Netvibes will let you do that I think.

I have it set up in widget view (little boxes), rather than feeder view (like GR) - but I have each feed limited to the last 7 unread items (and then you can choose whether to enable page scrolling to see more, or just leave it at 7).
  • Cheers Tim! Will check it out.

UPDATE: So I checked it out and it does as you said but I'm not sure it's for me. Maybe I'll persevere and learn to love it.
  • Feedly is really nice. Has replaced Bloglines for me. A fancy theme for Google Reader essentially.

  • What's this? Bloglines is still alive? I went through so much hassle trying to find something similar when I heard they were shutting down, found nothing and then settled on RSS Owl -- which is pretty lame in comparison.

    Back to Bloglines, I guess...
  • I use My Yahoo for news related stuff - I can pick out the headlines of stuff that interests me and then open it up in a new tab.

For comics and music blogs I use Google reader (which conveniently allows me to set my comics folder as default, and allows me to read and listen to the music blogs when I have the time) - because the I need the inline display for comics and mp3s.

The combo of the two works really well for me.
  • Despite their promise to leave Bloglines as it was, MerchantCircle merged it with Newsgator. So even though you login at Bloglines, it's pretty much Newsgator now. It's still better than Google Reader, but not nearly as good as it was. :/
  • google reader is pretty awesome. Their android app is sexors.
