Photo galleries with Blogger?
  • Hey folks,

I post a lot of photos on the ol' Rawkblog and I'd like to do it in a more manageable (and pageview-generating) way than dumping a bunch of 580x400 jpgs after the jump. For instance, LAist has a pretty sweet gallery function: http://laist.com/2008/04/29/coachella_hango.php

Is there any software or ways to do something similar within Blogger, or am I stuck? I'm guessing it's the latter.

  • Good question. If Blogger had such a thing, I would definitely use it too. We also post a lot of photos. I used to spend time making thumbnails readers can click to go to a larger version, but this gallery thing that LAist has is way cooler than that.
  • A friend of mine has a pretty great thumbnail/enlarge feature, though I have no idea how he does it: http://www.mmsullivan.com/phoenix/midnight-madness-2008-redux.

    MAGIC, I guess.
  • That's also nice. His source code indicates it's a plugin called Highslide.

That page led me to a site that shows Flash galleries. I'm not knowledgeable enough to know whether either Highslide or the Flash galleries are compatible with Blogger.
  • unfortunately flash galleries and/or slideshows are not going to help me get MOAR CLIX... back to the drawing board
  • Dave is a click whore.

Is this all because you got a snazzy new camera??
  • Pleez to esplain: MOAR CLIX. Mousy-mousy?

By the way, I am eye-ballin' that camera. I love mine for the zoom, but the size has occasionally been a problem.
  • @linda- I've said it before, and I'll say it again, I recommend my camera, The Canon Digital Elph, SD800IS. It's the perfect combination of flexibility (and manual control), portability, and quality. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canonsd800is/
  • Is this all because you got a snazzy new camera??

Doesn't hurt... Linda, the A720 has a much better zoom than any of the SD series but it's bigger. I found it easier to hold steady than the tiny SD series cameras, though.

  • I'm definitely looking, Harry, but I have no bucks to spend right now, so I'm only looking. I like the photos Dave gets. I will look at your link too.

At the Colin Meloy show Monday night, the venue does not allow digital cameras. I asked why and was told it was because they do not want videos recorded for Youtube. Almost all digitals record movies. However, once inside, all the little digital cameras came out of pockets or underwear. Mine is too large to hide under summer clothing, so I had to put it back in the car. Indie Mom had her film cameras, and they allow those, so she took our photos, but I was not happy.
  • The stupid thing about that is that anyone with a cell phone can record a movie for youtube. i haven't had trouble at the fonda in the past, it was probably just for Colin.
  • True about the phones; it's puzzling. I asked a security guy about the policy. He said that while individual artists do have their own preferences about photo equipment, it's the Fonda's own policy not to allow digital cameras. Or gum. You best not be chewin' no gum at the Music Box! They got carpets!
  • i had no trouble shooting Jens there. that's weird, i know the Wiltern has a no-camera deal but i hadn't had problems at the Fonda before.
  • The old thumbnail expansion thingy can be done via litebox too (and even more pretty in my opinion), but again I have no idea if you could use it in Blogger.
  • I've had a camera at the Wiltern! And hope to again, too. But maybe I haven't been there since I got my Olympus last summer. I may have to wear a coat to Beirut on May 30, lol.

I am asking my webmaster (Indie Mom) if we can use any of these things. My own thinking says we should be able to use a Java plugin, if not Flash. Our little mp3-player-thingy is Java.
  • Linda, I've had that happen a few times--getting turned away with my DSLR.

More and more if I have doubt that the venue will let me in, I'll email the band or their management a few days ahead of time and for a photo pass. Doesn't always work, but it's better than showing up and being turned away.
  • Bringing this back up for those of us on Blogger because I accidentally found something today--

If you go to the Layout tab in Blogger, scroll down to the bottom of the screen, and click on Add Page Element, there is a new choice there called Photo Slide show.

Has any blogspot tried that yet?
  • Where does it pull the photos from, Linda? I may investigate this tonight, since I've got to post my photos from Silver Mt. Zion last night.
  • I don't know! I have asked Indie Mom to make me a fake blog so I can try it out. I don't want to put it on the real one until I know how it works.
