Call it a recurring phase
  • but I keep coming back and listening to big band swing music, but seem to know pretty much nought about it. Anyone want to give me some pointers? People? Bands? Blogs?

So far I've got Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Gene Krupa, Louis Prima, and a few others

Kid Koala often does some interesting thing with this kind of sound at the moment. Anything in that direction would be good too.
  • In terms of a contemporary "indie-rock" take on big band, Matthew Herbert's the guy.
  • you might want to go rummaging through the public domain torrent sites, I bet they are a gold mine for your interest.
  • Thanks for that Sean, he certainly looks like someone contemporary to get into.

Thanks for the tip Jesse, although that seems to be adding to my problem. The treasure trove is massive, but I really need some pointers as to who to start with. A lot of it is out of copyright which is good and free (and no artist to support with cash), but with so much available it is hard to know where to start digging.

I take it no-one is writing about this stuff then?
  • Ellington and Basie's "The Count Meets The Duke" is superb
  • Madlib has an album where he had access to the entire blue note archive for sampling. Can't remember the name but I bet it has the word blue in it
  • Shades of Blue - that thing is awesome
  • That really is.
  • oh yes. LOVE Shades of Blue.
  • I actually Duke Ellington is a personal favorite.
