It's time to renew my yearly subscription (again) - can I use/find a coupon code? Or is this how they get you?
My site, now hosted on Dreamhost, is running slowly - can I look in Dreamhost somewhere to open up some more bandwith or fix the cache or something? Sorry for the general question.
Hey Dave - best I know that once you're in, you can't use codes... maybe someone else has had a different experience with them, but I wasn't able to get any discounts after that main bump.
On the bandwidth... there's at least a dozen people here who share the same story... I left them last month for similar reasons... bandwidth/downtime/yada yada yada.
a friend introduced me to a company called Knownhost, and they've been solid thus far--very good customer service.
that being said, they weren't able to help with data transfer because of dreamhost's control panel was incompatible. There are a lot of options out there... this thread was pretty helpful:
The good men at Nialler9 & Captain's Dead were a huge help and there are plenty more people who have some great advice when it comes to this stuff... hope they find this thread
That's a no to being able to use the coupons again I'm afraid.
With regards to the site being slow, Dreamhost has been having a lot of issues lately. I only have my mp3s there so speed is not such an issue for me, but quite a few people do seem to be moving away for their blogs.
Knownhost are well respected and pretty good. I'm with HostNine for blog hosting and am very happy with them. There are lots of places to look at.
As for the transfer, although the host will probably not do it for you as Dreamhost has a proprietary control panel and setup, moving a Wordpress install is pretty straightforward and there are normally people around to help if you get into trouble - me for one.
I just opened an account at BlueHost and it seems to be very stable and fast. I haven't made my new site live yet, but will in the next week or so. Installing wordpress and importing my old blog to it was no big deal at all. It's a different interface of sorts, from Dream Host but easily learned. I really got sick of the down time and the general run around. The only drawback to BlueHost (and maybe this is true of many others?) is that they require photo/government ID for SFTP. Otherwise you're stuck with just FTPing everything which I generally avoid (paranoid of me?).
You should go to MediaTemple.net, even if it costs $20/month. But LOOK, their homepage is so slick. Media Temple dot net
Oh and I've used DreamHost, BlueHost, and tons of other hosts out there, and my quest for the best ended with MediaTemple. They solved my bandwidth, load time, customer service, and downtime issues. And their interface is so sleek. :)
Oh, I use GoDaddy for my mp3 server. Very cheap. "unlimited" bandwidth & webspace for 15/mo. Customer Service was always spot on. (Even the DMCA guy ;))
