iTunes Pisses Me Off
  • Everytime I run iTunes on my PC, everything slows down. It's like it hogs all the resources. My web browsing even slows down. I have a laptop, running Windows XP and have 256MB of Ram (not good & maybe part of problem). I use iTunes cause of having an iPod, of course.

Does anyone know of a better program to use for ripping CD's, burning CD's and playing music? Something light that doesn't fuck with me and gets the job done. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
  • foobar2000 is my media player of choice, but i use Windows Media Player to rip cd's.
  • i will second the suggestion for foobar. great player, not a memory hog and can play just about every type of file (FLAC, mp3, aac, m4a)
  • MediaMonkey is amazingly good, if you ask me.  And Songbird is decent as well.

Anyone know of a good iTunes replacement which works on Mac OSX?  I despise iTunes with a passion, particularly the inability to watch a folder, and would love to find something else I can use.
  • songbird does watching, but is only for intel macs, I think . There are applescripts to add folder items to itunes, but it sounds like you want to change altogether?.
  • I think we have an Intel Mac and I think it is now up and running.  I miss the folder tree from MediaMonkey and the amazing things you could do with a simple right-click, but I am so glad to be shot of fucking iTunes I couldn't care less.
  • i like songbird for playing music at work and mediamonkey on my home music server because i can access the db it stores the info in via php.. *dork*

  • For ripping nothing beats EAC/LAME: http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=EAC_and_Lame
  • right - itunes is (well, last time I tried) pitiful at ripping, whereas anything using Lame sounds way better for the same bit rate/size.

@SongbyToad : if you've an intel, it should be fine; click blue apple logo - about this mac, to see the processor type.
  • EAC is great if you're doing what I'd call 'precision ripping', i.e., archiving/storing in FLAC or WAV w/cue sheets, log, etc. If you're just ripping a CD with LAME for an iPod or other portable player, Foobar is perfectly fine.
  • I use itunes to rip and burn cds and load up peoples ipods. Foobar the rest of the time with a library plugin.

You can really customize foobar pretty much however you want it if you want to spend a moment or 2 with it.
  • winamp/ipod plugin was fine for me back in the pre-MacBook Pro era

    hahahaha@!
  • Like Toad said Mediamonkey is your only man. It can rip CD's, is lightweight, has great search functions and it's free. I used to be a Musicmatch disciple but MM is easily better.
  • Can MediaMonkey do podcasts a la the iTunes store?

I have got slightly addicted to a few since having an iPhone permanently in  my pocket and spending a horrible amount of time on public transport.

I hate iTunes with a passion as it doesn't even run quickly on my brand new laptop, but the podcasts part keeps me coming back.
  • What, you mean the subscription side of it?

There is a feature in MM for managing podcast subscriptions, but I couldn't actually tell you how or how well it works.
  • Just had a look and it seemed to be okay. I was able to subscribe to my own happily enough, although the iTunes podcast directory still seems to have it beaten in terms of reach and variety and navigation.
  • Thx for the input so far fellow bloggers! Looks like it's either MediaMonkey or foobar. My other issue is funds, don't have any fucking money so it will have to be the free version of MM. Will that version be ok? They have a 'gold' version for $19.95 but can't even afford that right now. Is foobar free? Haven't checked that yet. Let me know Bros...
  • Foobar is 100% free.
  • I paid for the gold but there aint a huge amount of difference, the main one being that you have manually update the library after you've added new mp3s (with the gold version this is automatic). Don't let it put you off though, it's only 1 click.
  • I used to use mediamonkey until one day it decided to make copies of every MP3 of mine.. and it was ALOT of MP3's.. no clue what happened, some bug w/ the auto organize I think..

Been using foobar for a minute now and LOVE it. Simple, easy on the memory, and allows for plugins to do what it doesn't out of the box.
  • Has anyone used Cog? Is it good? I'm working on a mac, ugh... it seems to be one of the only media players that's fully functional.
