YAYBLOG!
  • The only thing I would dispute from this post is the Tom Waits comment. I'd much rather listen to any of the early Asylum year records in their entirety (and I do mean records) than anything post Swordfishtrombones in its entirety. And I don't think I'm alone in that.
  • I was just referring to the specific album, released retrospectively as far as I'm aware, called The Early Years Vol. Something.  The one with Late Night Evening Prostitute and Looks Like I'm Up Shit Creek Again.  I don't think the songs are bad, but I'd say they weren't really stellar.  Any of the actual albums from that period are absolutely brilliant though, no disagreement on that (although I love an awful lot of his weird, late stuff too).

I don't know if that's the best or the worst comment thread I've ever had.  Probably a little of both.  And don't worry squashed, with my reader numbers I think I am quite safe from Buzznet at the moment.
  • Kudos to Taylor (Music for Kids Who Can't Read Good) for his wedding mixtape...and congratulations!

Also LHB put up a really intelligent and interesting feature today, kicking off with Alina Simone. I have def hooked him up for upcoming folks who will write something up for this...it's space for substantive essays from artists as to why they are supporting Obama. Love it.

  • Shameless self promotion: The Clash is the New Black - A Brief History of Sampling and The Clash. Using recent tracks by Santogold and MIA as a starting point, I retraced the artists who've sampled the Clash over the years including Will Smith, Garbage, Big Audio Dynamite, and many, many more. Also included, is a bunch of live videos of the original Clash songs. It's really cool, if I don't say so myself
  • I've been talking about starting a 'blog label' and changing my blog's name. Today it actually happened...

Chasing Lions has teamed up with The Soft Drugs (TW Walsh from Pedro the Lion). We're giving away 'side a' of their upcoming album, Get Back. Take a listen and let me know what you think. Feel free to post songs on your blogs. We'll be releasing their full length in October.

  • puddle - I got your email about this but was troubled by your first sentence where you write that you're the first blog label. What about all the other great blog labels that are out there?
  • Songs - I agree that there is a growing number of blogs heading in the blog label direction. Many have released free compilations, and I think 'blog labels' will become a sensation. As far as we know, there hasn't been a blog that has been marketed as a 'blog label,' and the primary goal of signing artists yet promoting music from other labels. (We almost left it out of the press release.)
  • Puddlegum - I'm not sure if you mean something different when you say "blog labels", but DoneWaiting's Sunken Treasure label has been around for a long time.
  • Does Catbirdseat not count?
  • Is it all semantics? Blogs that have a label... or a blog label? Are they the same? Or does it make a difference to run both under the same roof?
  • Well I have a separate site for my label and a modified version of the same graphic.  Does it count as a blog label?  It's not that professional and pretty new, but I am liking the concept, anyway.
  • Either way, I think the concept is sound, albeit with the proviso that any blog or small label starts with - never assume it'll make money - but then I know you've accepted that anyway.  So what I meant to say was congratulations and go for it.  Must have been pretty hard to give up a brand and a name you've been nurturing for so many years.

    Damn those other 'gums!
  • I don't think it's a case of semantics. You either are or are not the first blog label. Since there are so many other examples of excellent blog labels that have been up and running for several years I'd say you are not.
  • I put out my first blog/label release in March of 2004 and I wasn't the first.
  • Don't forget about Aquarium Drunkard's Autumn Tone records. They just digitally released all of  J Tillman's back catalog, (after releasing a handful of other things before that). Pretty sweet.
  • I just announced the Blackdrop Portaits. It's just a start of an on-going series. Here's a couple to give you a taste:

  • As part of being blogger of the week on breakthru radio I had to pick some songs and say stuff for a program they call Anatomy of a Blogger. Mostly music though, this is where you can listen to the show.
  • nice photos adrian! do you shoot those in SF? Let me know if I can hook you up with anyone for those. gorgeous.

they remind me of a more casual Richard Avedon style.
  • Thanks, Wendy. Yeah, I've shot them all in SF so far. And thanks for the offer; I take you up on that at some point, I'm sure.
  • I randomly stumbled upon this cool unofficial video for Kissing The Beehive after I got my brains blown out by their show at La Zona Rosa last week. The video is just the audio of the song played over this 1964 animated short called "The Hangman". It isn't dark side of the moon - wizard of oz or anything, but it provides something cool to watch while you listen to that fantastic song. Check it out here.

Let me know what you think!
  • Hi there, I'm new to el.bows and relatively new to blogging too - I'd love some feedback on my site, echoisaacashe.blogspot.com, although having looked at some of those mentioned above, I'm beginning to think mine's pretty pants. Cheers, Isaac.

  • My blog is currently a "Hot Blog" on elbo.ws - how did it get there? I.e. how do you get to be a "hot blog"?
  • I got my first freelance gig today! I doubt I'll get one as good as this again.

It involves the three words: Blogging, Touring, and Allexpensespaid.

    Win.
  • That's great Mike!  Can you give any more deets?
  • Congrats Mike!! That's super-exciting :oD

Awesome! Who knows, may lead to more..
  • @ Brandon

Yeah--I'd hope so. It'll definitely make me more confident to apply for stuff in the future, but this kind of a one-off 2 week long corporate gig.

They are paying for musicians (not big acts) to play free gigs around the country and getting me to write about it--hence why they can pay well, compared to magazines etc. It's corporate sponsored but I couldn't be much happier about what I have to write about. I don't need to drive traffic to it or anything, just write words, so don't think I'm being a corporate apologist so that you all link to it when it goes live--I think it might actually be fun!
  • sounds like the plot of  "Almost Famous II"
  • Almost famous: A film about a young guy who goes on tour with a band right? I've never seen it but would be happy to watch it afterwards and share notes on comparisons.
  • Posted by: brandon@elbo.wssounds like the plot of  "Almost Famous 2.0"

  • I'm one of the grand jury members for this year's Polaris Music Prize, which is the Canadian equivalent of the Mercury/Shortlist/what have you.  Only one there not affiliated with a traditional/major media outlet.  I look forward to a higher class of bribe.

  • Mike - Congratulations! And you should definitely watch Almost Famous. I liked it before, but seeing it again recently was a different experience. I've never toured with a band, but I did relate to the character's mixed feelings on criticizing a band he liked and his struggle to find the right words for every sentence. :)
  • Great news Frank!

You too Mike...nice to see you guys getting greater recognition for what you do.
  • @ Said The Gramophone, at the end of July (has this already been discussed?)

"The French newspaper Le Monde is actually scandalised that we have not yet written about Carla Bruni."

So Sean did. France apologised in the comments.

    (maybe = Nayblog.)
  • I got accredited for media and photo pass for Radiohead this past weekend, strictly as myself.  Usually for larger shows I try to leverage one of the bigger outlets I work with ie AOL for access but this time I just asked for me, and got it.

    Kinda felt good.

  • nice!  Just don't forget about us a little guys when you rise to stratospheric, Stereogum-like fame :-p

  • man, after six years of doing this I think it's pretty safe to say that that's not going to happen
  • holy crap chromewaves, congrats. not something we can all say we've done.
  • good job Frank. I wish I could get a press pass to some big, sell out show. Owell I suck.
  • The Morning News have recently launched a blog drawing together their music, books and video coverage.

    http://www.themorningnews.org/digest/

The 'reading' coverage is especially strong.

My piece on Burial, which I'm very pleased with, has just been published. I'll be writing a few pieces every week-writing about all sort of music unlike my blog (UK music only).

Recently we have covered Burial, Dan Deacon, Shugo Tokumaru, Girl Talk, Monkey: Journey to the West, Conor Oberst, Pony Up, Medications, Walkmen.

Oh, and I got a job interview to write about THE WEATHER.

(Note: THE WEATHER are not a band)
  • The Digest seems a bit flawed in that they seemingly won't let you link to the files themselves. Seems like they want to partake in the music blog concept but are too scared to jump in all the way.
  • We can link to the files themselves if we want. If you look at the archives you can see that.

It's not necessarily about partaking or being scared, but doing something different, something better in many respects. Now which is more scary: doing something different or jumping in with everyone else?

And I don't think it's the mp3 blog concept, but the blog format which is a reason The Morning News went from weekly mp3, book and video round-up article to the blog format. We link to other posts because that is valuable commenting on what other people say, as happens with the literary coverage, as happens with the vidoes.
  • This is a very minor Yay! - more of a (yay) really - but I thought I'd ask for a little feedback.  I just posted an interview from Pickathon with a band called Bombadil and included a bit of video from the interview and the live performance with it.  The whole thing is ten minutes long, and it's a bit rough and ready and still being figured out, but I wondered if anyone had any tips or suggestions or feedback or anything like that.  I know the article itself could really do with being cut down too, but I sort of struggled to do that.
