Does Hype Machine and Elbows only spider through self hosted mp3's?
  • Or can we use services like zshare, mediafire etc?? I heard Hype Machine does pull from Yousendit?? I am new and a dummy. Sorry. I guess I should just pay for MP3 hosting?? I have 6 contributors and right now we just use mediafire for the most part...
  • It pulls from all those.
But my real advice is this: Do not rely on The Hype Machine to drive traffic. Blog your heart out and readers will find you and when you get aggregated onto The Hype Machine and it jumps your traffic, it will only be a nice surprise.
  • TheMusicSlut is 100% right
  • I am a student of the music/mp3 blogosphere, and I feel like theMusicSlut was the leader in the posting model of 'minimal music news bit' + 'unrelated mp3 from some time in the artist's career.' I had always assumed that the 'unrelated mp3' from a was sort of a strategic way to 'get more traffic' from aggregators. I don't 'morally object' to this model, but I just feel 'surprised' by the advice from a legacy mp3 blog with your brand.
  • @hipsterrunoff
some might call that 'being a slut'
    (updated with hopefully better humor)
  • @Byron Not to be a dick, I kind of agree with Carles on this one. Meh.
  • I was being completely sarcastic and was only trying to call out hipsters excessive use of quotation marks.
Sorry for the extreme dry humor.

Sarcasm is tough to detect on the interwebz. Sorry.

  • 'sall good
  • Thanks TheMusicslut. I was told by friends that they have seemed to notice that Hypem doesn't recognize tracks posted on sites such as drop box or mediafire and that Yousendit seems to be the only sure thing besides having trax actuallu hosted on your site... I guess I will find out for myself.

And believe me, we didn't get into this to get on the top 10 of Hype Machine... but to voice our own opinions about the music we have been playing out for the last 10 odd years. As actual working DJ's/producers/promoters out in the real world we have found that it is pretty easy to get the word out to our fans about the blog. Still, who doesn't want thousands of hits on their page as well? Anyone who discounts the importance of being on these aggregators by calling the hits a 'nice surprise' is either being a bit naive or pointedly misleading. Afterall TheMusicslut, I found you through Hypem and have been a consistent reader for over 2 years now!
  • @hipsterrunoff Thanks for the kind words. You do assume wrong with why we post mp3s. Posts include a song as a soundtrack to them. They are always related in some obscure way. It's something we've nearly always done in our four year existence and is now tradition. We started at a small uni in Scotland, illegally hosting mp3s on the university's server (our first one was a remix of 9-5 by Dolly Parton) without the knowledge that it would one day be so beneficial.

@djwinner. Thanks for reading the site dude. In all honesty, what I said above it what I truly believe about blogging. That the day you start relying on mp3 aggregators to drive traffic is the day the dream has died. It really was a nice surprise the day we started getting all those hits from the Hype Machine. I'm not discounting their importance, I am just warning against falling into the trap of relying on them.

Okay, I'll bite:  It's awful hard to listen to Stephen Malkmus talk in that YouTube video while I also play "Baltimore" over it.  And there doesn't seem to be any other content in that post.  So you're soundtracking the words "enjoy this snippet."

  • TheMusicSlut... Word is Born to that! Diversifying your marketing and readership is very key since many who use the aggregators are just looking for free music and often don't bother reading!!!! I wish there was a way to make them verify they read the article before they could get the music!!!

Or make them click through an extra page for the mp3 and reap the page view benefits.
  • Hey,
I can't actually comment on whether it gets indexed by The Hype Machine or Elbows as my blog's pretty new and content-lacking (One day...), but I currently use Groovebat ( http://www.groovebat.com/ ) for hosting my mp3s. They're specifically catering to music bloggers wanting to host mp3s, so you can hotlink (none of those ugly ad-laden landing pages), and embed your tracks in your audio player. Totally free, and IMHO, the best free mp3 host out there - they even host 100+ mb mixes ( http://djsilkworm.com/bass ).
Just my two cents, hope this'll be of use to somebody.
  • This thread is fantastic to re-read. It's like a fucking time capsule of awesomeness. HRO calling out the Slut for his hypocrisy, other banter back and forth, the ever enduring totally fucked up belief that one needs HM to be a successful music blogger and the always ever enduring most popular question on this forum - "Will the Hype Machine pick up my mp3's"? This is classic stuff.
I use to despise HRO and even called him out publicly due to my negative feelings. But I have known now for some time that I was totally wrong. The dude is a genius, Seriously. And his one comment on this thread is part proof of that.
