i'm still developing my site at http://www.indieshuffle.com/ and i am curious about how effective you have found blogrolls to be on your site when it comes to pagerank, traffic, etc. (or perhaps you avoid blogrolls - why?)
my intention as i begin this blogroll is to promote the community/websites that i like, but of course there are added perks. your input is appreciated!
I didn't have one for ages because it got so unwieldy and large as to be pretty much pointless, in terms of reciprocating respect for friends and so on. Actually I rather preferred it like that, to be honest.
I've just started one again, but it is pretty half-arsed, because it's like inviting people to a bloody wedding - there's just no easy point at which to stop.
How do you go about getting people to add you to their blogroll? Do you just email them and ask? Ive just got the blogs that i like to read on mine at the moment with none linking back to me
I blogroll blogs that I read, in the beginning I would be cute/funny and hit people up. 'Hey i like what you are doing lets form an alliance.' But now I just add blogs to my blogroll that I read or whose opinion/style I respect value and if they add me too..thats awesome, if not it's no sweat off my back I'm still keeping them on mine!
i use a google reader thing, it makes a nice little widget that shows the posts you 'share' through the reader.
Could you be a little more descriptive, are you just looking to have a widget that shows updates from rss's? that wouldnt be hard to find. They have similar things for twitter.
@bryon - check out Drumming On Tabletops - http://drummingontabletops.blogspot.com/ - (great site name, btw)... They've got that little "Blogs We Read" section. Blogger has the gadget to do that, just add the blog list and it will do that. I don't like how it's just text/links. I will it looked more like Hypes or Elbows bagde I've got up on my site, more of a graphic (like some of the twitter badges I've seen).
Tsuru, what about Sandy's site? http://www.slowcoustic.com/ ---> look at his headlines section and then the badge underneath that says "Slowcoustic Recommends." Have always been jealous of that one - looks so clean on his site too
@Lee - thanks. That widget is simply google reader - you can customize it with colour and number of posts, size, etc. I like it because you can tell folks about a single post that you may like from a blog that might not be on your "official" blogroll.
used the blogroll gadget for now, just titles & links, so it moves as people update their sites.... like that. WLFY took peoples banners and made those buttons! Want to do that, but time, time, time..... it's beautiful though.
Ah, can't say I care for their's SC, kinda got lost with everything else. I totally want to rip off WLFY, as it would fit my look great, but he beat me to the punch. Will have to figure my own thing out. Oh well. I'll keep playing around.
I would love to have a flash based blogroll - just because I am a nerd. Might be a bit distracting, won't show on iPhones or most mobile versions of sites...but might be an option...
yeah we listen for you and the waiting room have nice blog rolls. only thing about em is you can't read their titles /w 1st glance. have to roll over or click.
p.s. indie shuffle. That shuffle feature, and most popular post...so key. I feel like your blog is an ipod, very user friendly.
@afflictedwolf: the ipod comparison is an awesome compliment :-D
I've put a lot of work into the site. The shuffle feature just a really simple random redirect -- thank you Wordpress plugins (I gotta say, Wordpress has been a pleasure to work with - so customizable!). It's not easy developing a website that is "different" from the hundreds of music blogs out there, but I feel as if the visual simplicity of my site is pretty darn good (shameless?).
That said, this whole running a website (that actually gets traffic) is never-ending. That's why having contributors is so key -- allows time to focus on the website design. I have so many ideas that I have lined up for integration -- I just don't have enough hours in the day (especially while the East coast is having such nice weather!)
+1 on the awesomeness of wordpress, exporting, plugins, css work, php work; its all well documented and easy to get into and get your hands dirty. Thus my complete redesign.
Also a big +1 on not having enough time to design a site let alone be the sole author. Ha.
However, I've noticed that when one of my friends put me in their blogspot blogroll, it ended up producing a good 100+ "external links" to my site, per Google Webmaster Tools. And that, if I'm not mistaken, counts toward your pagerank for searches.
Definitely yes! Ever since I've actively been swapping links my search traffic (especially google image) has exploded. I've only picked up 15 links or so from this and it is driving about 40-100 new uniques daily. You also have to make sure you are search engine friendly by tagging your photos, posts and what not.
