Apple Vs. Google: Oh, It's On!

  • Apple mac line is going sideway yo. Apple is now about iphone and music.

    ------------------

to me iPod has served its purpose. Destroying CD/big labels. Now it's relegated in used gadget bin.

The next battle is internet service/cloud, plus cheap smartphone/ultra cheap portable computer.

    ------------

PS. bond. don't skoff HTC. They are much more competent company than Apple when it comes to smartphone. They made smartphone when Apple was still figuring out iPod.  They make their own wireless chipset when Apple was still trying to steal motorola's wireless driver. more importantly,

take a look who is in charge of HTC.

"Wang served as the chairman of the board of Formosa Plastics Corporation, one of the largest plastic manufacturers in the world, until June 2006, when he stepped down at the age of 89.[3] He remained chairman of the boards of Nan Ya Plastics Corporation, Formosa Chemistry & Fibre Corporation, and Cyma Plywood & Lumber Co. Ltd, but indicated his intention to gradually resign from these positions to retire. He was chairman of Ming-chi Institute of Technology, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, and Chang Gung University. He had been a vocal supporter of the Three Links between Taiwan and China."

    --------

Hint: these are the people who owns taiwan tech industry. (VIA, dram, etc.)  They can bend the law and financial flow. (eg. they can launch arm attack against apple office if they want to. lol.)
  • And... if it's not HTC, Google can call up any manufacturer and pay them to make their phone, motorola, nokia, hell, even some china only cell phone company I never heard of. As long as the hardware manufacturer is competent, makes the phone to google's specs, check done.

It's kinda like a retailer of pants. American Eagle, Gap, A&F, etc, don't actually make pants, they just hire competent factories to make them to the specs they send them, then they approve or reject the samples, monitor the production, and, if acceptable, put the pants in the store. Google can do the same thing with any good electronics/phone manufacturer, which it sounds like, is what they did with HTC.

It's exciting times for this! Wonder what MS is going to do? ZunePhone??
  • zunephone

    lol
  • omg. Chrome already beats safari. this is sad..

(tho' I  am sure nobody cares. lol)

    http://gizmodo.com/5426989/chrome-beats-safari
  • lol... Squashed & I had the same news! lol.
  • ok. I'll stick a youtube than.  The Sharp android phone, probably will be similar to microsoft windows based phone

    this one...

This phone is the shiniest hardware there is (watch the incredibly good looking screen, slider and very small) But the microsoft OS is a total drag.  Apple will never be able to do this in a million year. (Only japanese can do screen and motherboard like that.)

  • I'll know it will be dead in a year or two or whatever but..... I love my Pre.
  • So basically Apple is still kicking everyone's ass then?

That chart will be more useful when it includes Droid and the new Palm OS
  • Nice to see palm getting a bump. Hope they can make it! I like options & competition & the google/apple machines are starting to scare me!
  • I was thinking RIM is dumbphones, but the chart is for smartphones... what is RIM?
  • And isn't Symbian that sex toy?

    image

    Now THAT'S an operating system!
  • RIM is blackberry. Sybian is a dildo strapped to an ottoman. (see also: Microsoft)
  • RIM = Research in Motion
  • Interesting take on this at antipope http://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/2009/12/21st_century_phone.html -- there's alot at stake here not just about streaming / selling music...

As for LaLa - I love this service but its got shitty market penetration. Amazon or Google would be a better match than iTunes and as someone pointed out earlier, why hasn't iTunes offered the one-time streaming of entire songs? It's what sold me on EVERY full album I've bought from Lala (and it also clued me in NOT to buy the web album but instead bought one or two songs). I can't do that with iTunes. Additionally, iTunes is not up front about its DRM and encoding. These are things that matter to me but I think the average Joe looking for a song is going to go to iTunes or Amazon - he doesn't care about DRM or bit rate - he just wants the latest Lily Allen or whatever.
  • Didn't Apple ditch DRM some time ago?
  • @sean - can't remember. I think there was talk but I don't remember anything coming of it. I still get the occasional warning about non-syncable m4a's...
  • never understood why they put the touch & iphone together....

Regardless, oh man, the google-apple wars of the 10s is going to bananas! MS has GOT to be wanting to get in on that battle royale better, but is it too late? I guess it's never "too late", but you know what I mean, eh?

Speaking of..... how is Win 7 doing?
  • @Tsuru I read an article recently which called the touch a 'gateway drug' to the iPhone. Ha!

What's interesting to me in glancing at all these charts is how badly RIM/Blackberry is underperforming. They're on every friggin' network and the iPhone is only on AT&T. They should be doing waaay better than they are.
  • yeah, I'm surprised too. Blackberry is a office fave. Here at where I work, everyone's got one (not me, I refused to be chained to work after I leave the office!!!! plus, my job doesn't need one, lol).

Alright. Pet peeve. Blackberry emails at work. Keep it short, one line or two (think twitter/FB status style), because more likely than not you are addicted to no capital letters and really bad punctuation. I get TOO MANY work emails that attempt to write paragraphs & recaps on those things and they take forever to decipher. Really tweaks me off man! =P

We all have laptops & wireless here, so if you are going to be writing 2 page recaps, get on yer fucking computer man!!!

    lol.

    *phew*

    I feel better.

Could never say that here without getting a call to HR shortly there after.

    lol.

Back to the thread-ish..... anyone know how them netbooks are doing as a competitor to the smart phone?
  • The netbooks seem a bit pointless given how cheap regular old laptops are now.
  • I know, but at $150 and $200, I think they were pretty hawt for some of the office & electronic stores. I wouldn't buy one, but that's never stopped people before!
  • Am I the only one thinking a laptop with screen larger than 14" is just ridic, let alone 15"+. They are too big to lug around. 11"-12" laptop + cheap plug in 20"  screen seems more sensible to me.  I bet it's cheaper too.

the ion 2 from nVidia seems like a promising combination for low cost yet powerful mini laptop.
  • Probably not the only one Squashed, but there are a significant number of people on the other side. The difference in size between a netbook and a laptop and the difference in processing power doesn't work out to an equal tradeoff, IMO.
  • Not to say that I think squashed is or isn't right in a general sense, but I am definitely that way inclined myself.  A laptop is for portability, as I use it anyway, and anything above about 15" becomes a bit of a pain in the arse.
  • I dunno, the difference in size between a 12 inch and a 17 inch doesn't make much difference to me.
  • all netbook has VGA out, and next generation netbooks will have HDMI plug. So hijacking nearby big screen for that rare occasion  wouldn't be a problem. I don't think anybody expect $300 machines to drive shoot them up game on 6 screens.

I hope nvidia kicks intel ass with Ion 2 tho. $300 machine that can 720p video with HDMI plug?  move over portable DVD player. (tho, I got the feeling Intel will litigate nvidia ass to high heaven first.)

    http://www.liliputing.com/2009/12/intel-calls-nvidia-ion-overkill-for-netbooks.html

But it’s pretty clear that Intel wants you to buy a more expensive computer with a pricier chipset to perform those tasks. That’s probably why there’s no support for H.264 video acceleration in the recently announced Intel Atom Pine Trail platform, which means that HD and high quality Flash video is going to be a no-go on computers with next-generation Atom chips unless they have a dedicated graphics chip. Like the ones that Broadcom and NVIDIA are offering.

You might wonder why anyone would need to watch HD video on a device with a 1024 x 600 pixel display, but more and more video content is being delivered in high definition. The ability to watch it without transcoding it to a lower resolution first is key. And while much Flash video is available online in both HD and standard definition formats, that might not always be the case.

What do you think? Is the NVIDIA ION platform overkill? Is it a must-have feature for you? Or is it a nice option to have, and one that you hope Intel doesn’t squash with its recent move to combine the CPU and graphics processor onto a single chip?

Update: Bezinga’s NJ Beachum puts it best, when he says  “It is almost as if Intel is saying, ‘How dare people use a netbook like it’s an actual computer, for multimedia, music, word processing, video games, and other purposes? We will not have it!’”
  • yeah, I got a big lap top, I love the larger screen & more desktop like power. I move it around the house depending on where we are hanging out, couch, desk, design studio, etc. And, when I travel, it slips in the backpack no big deal.
  • hey now...... what are you trying to say?

I'm more of a spaz & geek than a nerd!
  • well.. this surprised me:

    image
  • Why is it surprising? Doesn't that pretty much line up with everything we've been talking about? Or am I not looking at the data in the right way?
  • I also wonder if any of these charts can factor in jailbroken/unlocked smartphones? I have an iPhone on T-Mobile, but I'm pretty sure T-Mobile doesn't know that. I guess it depends on where the data is coming from.
  • Sorry, I wasn't clear. The RAZR stats surprise me! thought that thing was long dead!
  • The Razr is a great cell phone for people who just want to make phone calls or occasionally send a text message (easy to use, reasonably large keypad). My sister & bro-in-law - who are very non-techie people - both have one, and my dad just bought one. It's like a jitterbug phone, but without the huge 'I AM OLD!' target painted all over it.
  • lol...

Honestly, I can't think of anyone with one. See a lot of LG Rumours out there, I think the Dare is the same thing (not sure)... good little phone. Finally dumped it for a smartphone.
  • Plus, you have to remember that I think the Razr is one of Verizon's free phones. Not everyone wants to browse the web or needs an app.

Think of it this way - 270 million people have cellular service in the United States. Given the chart above where there are roughly 10 million iPhone users and say 15 million Blackberry users, you have to figure the majority of the other 245 million are likely sticking with basic models.
  • Jitterbug rocks.
  • New Apple tablet rumors say that the device will actually be an e-reader

Apple LogoThere are some new rumors that Apple's new device will actually be marketed primarily as an e-reader. It makes sense that Apple will want to enter the e-reader market now, when it's starting to take off.

It'll be interesting to see what kind of display will be chosen for such a device. Almost all e-readers use e-paper displays which are very efficient and great on the eye. But they are monochrome (although color ones are expected in 2010) and have slow refresh rate. If Apple wants this device to be used as an internet tablet too, they'll have to choose another display type. Obviously we're hoping for the first Apple OLED product...

A fucking ebook?   you GOT to be kidding me. Android will kill everybody. (Motorola already launched android multimedia platform/android tablet)

  • Leaked next Moto Android phone....

    4 inch screen!

    shadow

Oh, Android – how good you have been for Motorola. It was only months ago that they were teetering on the edge of obscurity; one 350-person Android task force later, they’ve got the most popular Android handset in the lands and are being name dropped on a nearly daily basis around the rumor mill.

A Chinese leakster managed to get his mitts on this (confusingly obscured) shot of an unreleased Motorola handset, and was nice enough to share it with the world. According to the original source, the handset you see up there is called the Motorola Shadow (or “Mirage”, depending on who’s translation you believe.) What the tipster lacks in well-framed pictures, they make up for with knowledge of the specs: coming in at a ridiculously thin 9mm, this baby supposedly packs a monstrous 4.3 inch screen running at a resolution of 850×484, an HDMI port (shown in the pic), and an 8 megapixel camera ready to shoot video in 1080p. They don’t mention an operating system, and the pic doesn’t help much in that department – but unless Motorola’s doing something crazy, it’s a pretty safe bet that we’re looking at a UI mod of Android.

    http://www.mobilecrunch.com/2009/12/31/motorola-mirage-shadow-android/
  • an ebook? it isn't using that electronic ink, right? haven't we already determined that people don't read books on lcd-type screens?
  • Doesn't matter much how great your device is if you don't market it properly, and right now it seems like Android/Motorola have hired Microsoft's marketing department. I haven't seen such an obfuscated marketing campaign since that MS commercial with Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld.
  • I got a marketing campaign for them. Insert cute indie girl, lip-synching cute indie song, playing on (granted not-so cute) android for 15 to 30 seconds. Have amusing & cute things happen to/around her during that time. End commercial.

Motorola, I'll take my commission now! ;)

  • Android Taking Wind Out Of iPhone's Sails

Just in time for Google to unveil its own Nexus One smartphone, ChangeWave Research reports the public is more excited than ever to buy an Android based handset — at the expense of Apple, Microsoft, and Palm.

ChangeWave surveyed 4,068 consumers in the first weeks of December and found that 21% of people looking to buy a smartphone in the next 90 days want to buy one running on Android. That's up from 6% when ChangeWave asked people in September.

  • Among respondents who currently own a smart phone, 4% say they're currently using Google's Android operating system – a 3-pt jump since our survey in September.

But more importantly, 21% of those planning to buy a smart phone in the next 90 days say they'd prefer to have the Android OS on their new phone – a monstrous 15-pt jump in just three months.

To put this in context, three months ago Android OS was tied for last place in consumer preference among the major mobile operating systems. But since then it has surged into second place ahead of all competitors except the iPhone OS X (28%) – which remains the number one choice for operating systems, although down 4-pts from previously.
