Redesigned Walrus
  • I have been toying with this new design for a while now - but today put it up for real and would love any feedback (good or bad - I can take it).

    So...what do you think? http://www.thebluewalrus.com/
  • very clean, I'm a fan, major upgrade over your last site. Could use some more "Walrus" customization though - you know, some Tim website expertise :) (by that I mean something that makes us know it's yours and not another run of the mill design - not that this is per se - but we all obv know you're talented with that stuff)

maybe the posts on the front page can go on down to the bottom footer opposite the twitter box?
  • totally disgusting. threw up on my computer. =P

    lol.

Just kidding... it looks fantastic man!!! The only thing missing is you and I exchanging links!!! <3
  • Thanks for the feedback guys - much appreciated.

I was thinking the same about some more personalised customisation, but every time I added something it seemed to detract from the posts which is obviously the reason for the page. I will keep trying stuff their though (and blushing slightly at the ego boost - thanks Lee!).

@Tsuru - That shows how much in need my blogroll was for an update. Tsuraradio has been in my RSS reader for about a month now, but somehow never found its way onto the blogroll. Either way, consider yourself added.
  • Looks phenominal! Seriously like it a lot. Major improvement.
  • Hmm, I like it kinda, but I think it could perhaps do with a couple of tweaks, if you don't mind my being entirely candid.

Firstly, nice and clean, which I really like.

However, I think it lacks a little character.  More Walrussness, as Lee implied.  Not sure how to do this exactly, but making a little more of the Walrus sketch might help.

Also, I think that big sea of white needs breaking up a little.  Maybe some emphasis on the headline post would be a good idea, or perhaps that whole top box with the headline article and the featured posts in it.  Either way, I think pure white backgrounds work well with really well-ordered information, but I think there might be a bit much going on on the page to get away with it - I would look at adding some sort of demarcation to that top box if I were you to isolate and emphasise the really important bits.

The site still looks nice though, so please feel free to ignore my pish if you choose!
  • @tim --- and you have been added too!! <3
  • Yeah, I've seen a lot of sites utilizing this theme lately (Culture Bully in the music blog world, but others across the blogosphere). So I would say some customization would be good.
  • Culture Bully just switched themes, actually. They went rather austere as well. I'd second the idea that you might want a bit more color on there, Tim.
  • Yeah, I think Chris might've made that switch because of his semi-hiatus. But the statement wasn't so much about CB still having at much as the theme floating around the internet a good bit.
  • Sorry, didn't mean to correct you. It was more of an aside. You're right though, I've seen the basic framework on a lot of different blogs.
  • I like it, maybe a bigger tusk or something, but it is moving to be more magazine like. If this is an "old" theme, I still like it.
  • Great feedback guys. Thank you.

The Arthemia theme is quite pretty (and now free), so whilst I haven't really noticed it about I can definitely imagine that would be the case.
And as such you're absolutely right - I need to Walrusify the site a good bit more. I've been talking to an artist friend about redoing the logo and doing some doodles around the site (yes some of the inspiration for this is from the Toad but with more sea, tusks and lazing on rocks...), and blue-theming it a bit.

It's a work in progress (but I think I'll keep the structure), so I shall keep changing things.
  • Tim!! It's gorgeous!!! Wow, I am even more in love <3 <3
  • Tim-- it looks like crap. I'm sorry, I pooped out a better blog which Squash squashed during a banter session on American imperialism. You should stick with the standardized templates of Blogger. They're awesome. =) Just look at mine. So classy, and trashy all at once. But really, the walrus add would be nice--though don't mess up that sheik clean look you got going.

Can I get in on this link exchange with Tsuru and you? I want friends. I'm all alone. *sob* Listening to Aerosmith "I Don't Want To Miss a Thing," makes me feel better. *sniffle*
  • Sheik.

    Words fail me.

    And you, apparently.
  • Sheik Walrus / Walrus the Elder? - I don't think I'm that old yet. Maybe I am. Fuck.

    ...and Tart - you're so kind :)
  • No you completely misunderstood. Shiek, like hip, a reference to the highly talent Duncan Shiek. *cough*

So I wrote that post quickly.

SongsbyToad. You're writing is very shiek, your punctuation and structure is impeccable. What is this a forum of critics or something?

Tim. I don't think you're "that old" until you refuse to acknowledge that you might be "that old."
  • Chic.

    Song.

    No offence, like.
  • =)

    No.

    Offense/ce.

    Now cultural differences are factors.

Howdy, Stranger!
