I woke up and I'm on the Hype Machine, is this real life?
  • I wake up today to a message from someone on Twitter saying "hey I found your blog when listening to ___ track on Hypem, digging it."

I love my blog but I hadn't come CLOSE to submitting it to the Hype Machine. I haven't been around that long and from what I understand from this forum and elsewhere, they're pretty strict in their selection process, so I figured I'd save myself the rejection and just wait a few more months until I was better established.

So naturally, when I got this tweet I'm thinking "grumble grumble, who is stealing/streaming my stuff." So I head over to Hypem to find out.
I searched the track in question and LO AND BEHOLD, Loose Lips has it's own Hypem page?! And 3 followers?!

I'm flabbergasted. I'm actually really worried that it's some glitch. But the page is there (http://hypem.com/#!/blog/loose+lips/14933) and seems legit? Seems like it got added about 2 hours ago.

Does this happen? Can blogs get listed without the owner knowing about it/being contacted? Is this real life? Or is this more than likely some glitch in the system and it will be gone tomorrow and I shouldn't get my hopes up?

I tried e-mailing Hypem via the contact form and my blog wasn't listed under the drop-down of blogs able to contact them, so that has me a bit worried.
I don't know wether to be SUPER EXCITED (my traffic just quadrupled in the past 2 hours) or prepare myself for a huge letdown when they e-mail me back saying "yeahhh, haha, sorry bout that."
  • Hey Loose Lips, Any one can recommend a blog to be added to the hype machine through the hypem.com site, it doesn't have to be the administrator of the blog. To be on hype machine is a real cool thing... so i think you should be excited :)
  • I think Hype have become a lot more selective in the last year or so, partly to protect themselves from regression to the mean, as more and more blogs pop up, and try and maintain a certain level of consciously curated quality.  So for all this is the first time I've heard of anything like this happening, I have to confess it doesn't entirely surprise me.  And congratulations, by the way!
  • The good people at Hypem answered my rambling barrage of questions, and it wasn't a glitch! woo
    Thanks guys :)
  • My monthly hits went from about 750 to 20k after the jump to Hypemspace, definitely a good day!

But remember, with great power comes great responsibility

  • As a full time college student, double-majoring (in foreign languages and political science no less) at a prestigious and competitive top-75 university, with an internship as well as a part time job, who up to this date has done EVERYTHING for her blog solely by herself (writing, editing, design, formatting, promotion, programming, etc.) as a labor of love... yeah, I like the attention.
It's nice to finally see my site's traffic reflect the amount of time, energy, sacrifice, and thought I have put into making my blog the best that it can be. And I'm sure that everyone on this board can relate to that feeling.

So while you may think snide comments regarding my excitement are funny, I think you just sound like a prick.
  • Next step...get off blogspot :-)
  • @LOOSE L!PS - Geezus, the comment was in reply to "apocketfullofseeds" NOT you. That's why I posted it below his. If it was intended for you, I would have written @LOOSE L!PS.

In fact, I've been enjoying your blog and well written comments on this forum, whatever that's worth coming from a "snide commenting prick".

  • Oh. Oh my god.
I'm SO sorry. Wow. I thought it was directed at me what with the whole dress analogy and me being a girl and just...wow. Foot in mouth. Now I feel like the prick. Actually, more like a total asshole.
    My sincere, sincere apologies.
    Eep.
  • @LOOSE L!PS - There is no need to apologize at all. When I comment directly below someone's comment (in direct response to them), I don't always use the @ and probably should. Plus, "apocketfullofseeds" has been notorious for making "ahole" comments to proper thoughts I've posted before. However, I should have just ignored the opportunity to "get back" at him which is a childish thing to do.

Also, I am very sincere in what I wrote about your blog and comments on this forum. I am 100% behind female bloggers, wish we had more of them and am glad HypeM has added that category. It's very obvious that you are an intelligent lady and also have good taste in music. I just tuned into your blog after reading your comments on the forum and love it. Plus, you've added very well written and intelligent comments on this forum which is a nice relief from some of the other stuff posted here. And please believe me, I am being truly honest and sincere in saying this!

And yes, I am a prick 50 yr. old loser. But please believe me, I wasn't being a prick to you and never will be. I admire what you do, say and your enthusiasm!

  • David, thank you so much. That means a lot to me. Being a 'new kid on the block' I feel like I still have a ways to go before I fully 'prove my worth' so to speak. It is both reaffirming and reassuring to receive a compliment from someone such as yourself, who, from what i gather, has been around for quite some time and seen your fair share blogs both good and bad.
Thank you for your kind words and support. I'm sorry about the earlier misunderstanding.
    Happy new year. :)
    Mikayla
  • Haha, I remember waking up one morning and checking Google Analytics to find 30 hits and thinking "HOLY SHIT"!, lol. Definitely inspires to blog more.

Oh, and you two are way too nice to each other to be on the internet ;) love the kindness :D
  • "Oh, and you two are way too nice to each other to be on the internet ;) love the kindness :D"

;-), I agree, that's the way it should be!

My comment was ABSOLUTELY not directed to Mikayla. I was responding to APFOS's 'Great Power' comment. Though, I thought Mikayla's first response was cool since she wrote it with justification and confidence. And she was correct in calling me a 'prick" since I am really a cynical old 'prick'. I've been called a hell of a lot worse. LOL!

I can't navigate over to the other thread right now but regarding the 'New Hype Machine' thread - female music blogger category discussion, I thought Mikayla's comments regarding female bloggers was spot on. I love the ladies for obvious reasons but what I also love is their feelings and interpretations regarding music. To me, they speak more from the heart and have a totally unique and, for the most part, a deeper connection to the music. Maybe, I was a female in a previous life? ;-)

I appreciate Mikayla's positive comment about me. But the truth is I have music blogged for years and have been a dismal failure. I have certain expectations of what a a good music blog should be and I could never achieve those expectations myself. So I sit back and analyze other's blogs and, at times, make snide comments. It's a weakness on my part since I can't be the music blogger that I want to be. But yeah, I've been around the scene for awhile and am an old guy that has seen things evolve over the years. Though, my opinions are questionable at best since they come from my feelings of being inadequate and not fitting in as a music blogger. I'm a complete mess. ;-(

As a complete aside: @Mikayla - I saw from your blog that you are in the Dallas area. I lived there for over ten years and have two children that live with my ex-wife in Allen. My oldest daughter (20 yrs. old) is coming down here to Florida to visit me for awhile. I'm hoping she will stay long term and find a job here!

Good to see you promoting the local scene there. Denton is a hotbed of Indie music activity. I do miss the Dallas area somewhat since there is a lot of cultural things to do there but most importantly I miss my daughters. Melbourne, Florida, where I'm at, is sometimes referred to as Melboring, Florida. Anyways since I'm 50 and time is running out rapidly, the 'retirement' aspect of Florida is probably best for me. ;-)

  • :) :) :)

    David,
yes! while i originally went down there for school, i now more or less consider it home. i'm trying to promote the scene, at least. i do think dallas is a bit far behind many other major cities in terms of music. i'm originally from chicago so when i went down there initially it was pretty depressing. but i think the city is starting to catch on and make leaps and bounds towards embracing a more 'alternative' music scene, which is really great.

i can imagine you'd miss your daughters. i miss my dad every day! i wouldn't mind if he moved to florida though so i could stop coming up to the bitter winter of chicago to visit him... :p
  • I wish I could wake up and be on hypem! Sadly, I usually just waken up with a plain old stiffy...

    Congratulations!
