Unfortunately for David Condos the inevitable comparisons to Chris Martin (Coldplay) will probably put him at a serious disadvantage. From what I have read and heard he does have some serious talent and at the young age of 21.
It's pretty impossible these days to not compare a new talent to some other established or liked artist. I try to avoid it but the first thing that came to my mind was Coldplay and Chris Martin when I listened to Condos.
Maybe Condos is trying to copy Martin or maybe his voice just sounds like that. I still like what I hear, Chris Martin in the head or not...
Too band Coldplay weren't put at a serious disadvantage when all they have really done is clone the sound of another band who actually established that sound (U2 anyone?). Just listen to Coldplay's last album and you can hear The Edge's arpeggio guitar playing all over it.... makes you wonder if there is justice in the music world...
really? i hear a lot of jeff buckley in his voice, but in the song i hear coldplay. i just think for an unmastered demo, it's pretty mind-boggling. i would think that sounding like chris martin could really only help him, even though coldplay really ain't my cup of tea either. but i couldn't get past how this was a demo and how he isn't signed or anything. that's what caught me off guard.
Yeah, Maybe some Buckley in the voice but guarantee the obvious reaction will be Chris Martin. I agree though, the track is excellent and the dude has some talent. I just hope he gets the chance he deserves without being put into a category too quickly....
I don't hear Chris Martin, I think a Jeff Buckley comparison is a lot closer to his sound and style - but the Martin similarity shows itself in "I should be lost without you" - that strain to sing at a higher pitch.
I second the James Blunt comparison. I like it, but in the same way I like Ben Folds: good music, but (as Tim said) waaaaaaaaayyyyyyy to slick of production.
i'm sure it is. it would have to be. also, i disagree with the james blunt comparison, though i understand it. i just think this kid has some chops. according to his myspace page, he also plays most of the instruments on all of this.
James Blunt, for me, is doing a purposefully creaky, annoyingly coy and delicate version of whatever it is Chris Martin does with his voice, which I find incredibly annoying. This dude's doing the exact same thing---whether it's more Blunt or Coldplay, I don't know (I've only heard that one song by Blunt), but I find it both derivative and calculated. That said, the kid's due to be a multi-millionaire by this time next year, unless the prevailing mega-pop winds change dramatically.
James Blunt sounds like an empty, hollow vacuum to me. this kid has soul in his voice -- real, actual soul and not some half-assed scratchy imitation soul either.
but he doesn't even have a record deal or anything. i guess if bloggers hate him, marathonpacks is right, it's destined to be platinum. thanks everyone who responded.
loudersoft, you're hearing something i'm not. but i'd stop way short of the "blogger hate=platinum" connection, although i'm pretty sure you're being ironic.
man I must be behind because I never heard Blunt or Ben Folds. Will admit I listen and do like at times Coldplay but that is just because they can copy U2 somewhat ok at times....
