Last night Brandon and I had a quick exchange on Twitter about our first favorite bands. I thought it might be fun to start a conversation here. I think it's especially interesting from a blogging standpoint to reminisce and see how your tastes have changed (or haven't changed) over the years.
So: Who was your first favorite band/artist?
By 'first favorite' I don't mean some boyband (I grew up in that area...) that you loved when you were 8 years old because everyone else did too. I mean the first band/artist that you more or less discovered on your own accord (or through the recommendation of a friend) and went absolutely crazy for: bought all their albums, went to all their shows you could, obsessed over, etc.
I'll go first. (uh, obviously)
Mine were the Strokes. I was 12 years old, and heard Is This It playing in some store. It all went uphill from there. As for taste change? I'd still count them among my top 10 favorite bands. They'll probably jump higher once this new record comes out. Provided it's good...
Tori Amos. I was also 12. :) I'd liked other bands (mostly stuff my older sis listened to) before her, but Little Earthquakes was the 1st album I felt was truly my own discovery and I was pretty obsessed with her for through the next 4 albums (it was all down hill after that:p).
First favorite? Alice Cooper. Only reason was because it was my older brother's favorite band, though. "Ballad of Dwight Fry" got played a lot in my house. This makes no sense if you know my current musical leanings.
First CD I ever bought was The Simpsons: Songs In The Key Of Springfield, at which point my dad told me how "I must not be into music that much". So I went on the hunt for a "real band" to impress my dad and fell in love with Billy Joel. He wasn't that into him - it's The Beatles or nothing with him - but he thought it was a step up from The Simpsons. Still in love with BJ to this day :)
I went to Borders one day at around age 11 and picked up Trail of Dead's Source Tags and Codes, Jimmy Eat World's Clarity, and Brand New's Your Favorite Weapon. I had gone through a little punk phase before then and had listened to mostly classical before that, but basically just listened to what other people told me to or random compilations of artists I didn't really know about (like the warped tour CDs and whatnot).
That fateful purchase was what actually got me into music and discovering music. If you ask me how I picked the records... I think I'd have to say it was based on liking the band names and the album covers. Fate is probably a better answer though.
I listened to music very casually as a child, though I do remember being in my living room when I was a kid and trying to do the 'I Can't Dance' dance. Ha!
The first band that really got me into music and that I had an unhealthy obsession with was Blur, however. I found Parklife in a bargain bin at a local record chain and went nuts for it. Sounded nothing like anything my friends were listening to nor what was being played on MTV/radio at the time (because back in the olden days before the internet, those outlets actually influenced what you listened to! Imagine that!). I scrambled to buy every single, cover, live album & compilation in existence. At the time, that involved lots of special orders and forking over 4x the normal price for imports, because I lived in a tiny town & our local record chain just made funny faces at me when I would ask if they had any Blur records. Every time I got my hands on an interview with them I would then seek out all the bands they were talking about, so I was turned on to XTC, The Kinks (who I only knew through their two big hits), etc. I've seen them 2 times, which is something of a feat given how infrequently they toured the states and the fact that I didn't live on a coast.
Yeah live they are pretty special. The pink and blue spinning lights on Girl & Boys is a favourite of mine...or when Albarn gets pissed and falls off stage.
I remember searching all around the place for that Japanese import Blur remix album Bustin' + Dronin - first time I appreciated remixes actually.
Yeah, Bustin & Dronin probably introduced me to the remix as well. Duran Duran's Nite Versions probably was the first real exposure to remixes, but I don't think I thought of those as remixes at the time. B&D was also my first time hearing 'Popscene' because I had the UK version of Modern Life which didn't include it.
Quad City DJs and my musical taste has gone downhill ever since. :p
But in all seriousness, I would say it was Rage Against The Machine. They are the first band I can recall as my "favorite" when I was just starting to develop my music taste.
wow i just remembered. this was the first CD i ever bought with my own money. (well, money that my parents had loaned me, considering I was 8...)

i still have that cd. ....i think this explains a lot.
If we're going for 1st purchases - 1st Vinyl = The Monkees, 1st tape = Debbie Gibson, 1st CD = Sarah McLachlan. The 1st songs I learned the lyrics to were "Don't Fear the Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult & "We Built This City on Rock 'n' Roll" by Jefferson Starship.
