As you might have heard, Twitter and Google recently rolled out their Follow Button and +1 Button, respectively. One of my favorite things having started a music blog is the implementation of new social media features and seeing them in action. With that said, I recently added them both to http://www.remixthevideo.com.
I believe the Follow Button from Twitter will dramatically increase my number of followers. Before my recent redesign, I didn't even have a link to our Twitter page, so we have a lot of room to grow and this will surely speed things up. The Follow Button is similar to Facebook's Like Box in a way that people can Follow you without ever leaving your website. You can easily get those impulsive follows, which is the main reason I have both featured on my website.
The Google +1 featured on my site is more of an experiment. I think it has great potential to increase a site's SEO. If people begin using it in large numbers, it would dramatically change the concept of SEO.
Anyways, what are your thoughts on these two new features?
Yep! I added that with the redesign. I was thinking adding Tumblr share button would help since the demographic who uses RTV is likely to have a Tumblr. I know it has been used but it is hard to tell if there has been a share or not.. They definitely could make it better.
It does affect SEO. The +1 button impacts search results in that if your friends have +1'ed something, they're going to tailor your search results so that you see those posts. That way you can blame your friend if a post sucks :-)
I'm a little biased given that I work at Google -- so optimistic that it'll have a good impact. I tried installing it on my site last night, but it didn't work well with the Ajaxed URLs :-(
Tiana, I would recommend ditching shareaholic. I promise that you will see much better sharing across the board using the official buttons and implementing them manually.
For example, to tweet something from your site using Sharaholic, I need connect to Twitter first before even pressing Tweet. If you remove as many steps as possible for your users to share and they will share more.
for the twitter thing, you only have to sign in once and it doesnt ask you again. I don't mind it, it works for me so far :), I find that people use the buttons on a regular basis so it doenst bother me so far :)
