Songbird - Mozilla Based Media Player
  • Any tried this out? It's only at 0.0.1 at the moment but is a media player very similar to itunes able to work with music stores/ music blogs.

It looks pretty promising with the ability to eventually create extensions and other dashing features including subscribing to blogs/ stream all the tracks and such (bandwidth implications) and this obvious favours blogs that direct link to mp3 as opposed to using savefile/rapidshare etc.

But mainly - it offers up options to stream/ download/ collates tracks from any given page eg. Music Blogs. This is demonstrated with La Blogoteque and My Blog - Take Your Medicine as one of the default bookmarks! Hurrah! I wondered why I experienced a strange increase in traffic.

I noticed my content was all jumbled as the web-browser can be made really small making my content overlap so I had to change that. Not easy. But I've made it so the content is the first thing you see... the point is download it and see what you think. I reckon this could have quite an impact on music blogging if this piece of software has the same impact as mozilla firefox web browser.

Mirror for this "Open Source I-tunes Killer" as the actual download site is under a lot of strain

    Opinions?
  • I've got a couple of other guys in my office to try it too .. and I think it has a little way to go as yet .. However, I agree it could be an interesting alternative ... I can't imagine anything competing with all that corporate Apple branding though! Dammit!
  • yeh its nowhere near a proper release - just proof of concept - I'm convinced!
  • I tried it, it's alright, but I prefer MediaMonkey ( http://www.mediamonkey.com ) for managing my local files..
  • I played with it a bit on a friend's PC notebook, it's pretty slick. The integrated music stores are nice. Plus, plug-ins will start appearing that will let users customize it to their taste.
  • yeh plug-ins/ extension should be pretty sweet - they're one of the reasons I've stuck with Mozilla Firefox
  • Looks interesting. I'm gonna have to explore it. Thanks for the tip!
  • It looks great, but still has some major bugs to fix (ï½?t the ï½?ï½?ï½?ent, it dï½?esn't seeï½? tï½? ï½?ï½?en links.
