"remove this track"
  • This is the thread where you tell fellow bloggers that you've been asked by labels/artists/PRs etc to take a track offline, in order to spare others the headache. I'll start: tracks from Herman Dune's upcoming "Giant" (which were free on the band's website!)
  • thats a bad one - the first I've heard of someone forced to take it off despite it being freely available
  • the label's also trying to contact the band to have them take the tracks on their website offline!
  • Wow, talk about a management issue...
  • I think it's pretty safe to eliminate anything whatsoever related to Interscope, due to their nastiness re: YYY, and currently with anything on Vagrant. They sent me the new Lemonheads CD, I wrote it up and put up an mp3, and now they've sent me a "notice of infringement and declaration." I know they dicked around with someone here on the Futureheads a while back, too. Keep away. They're a headache. (I had my reply and his original on here, but that just felt weird
  • Live versions of new Shins songs.... (wtf?)

Anything from Swan Lake's new album that isn't "All Fires."
  • Secretly Canadian/Jagjaguwar are usually bad news in terms of advances. (Which totally sucks since they're basically my favourite label.)
  • I was really pysched to download the Lemonheads track when I got home from work, Mr. Packs. Oh well...
  • To their credit, SC/Jagjag always put up promo tracks really early and take good care of their bands.

    no live shins, huh? weird.
  • umm, Matador. I got a big threatening to-do from Web Sheriff concerning a track from Yo la Tengo's latest. Does this mean I can't play their songs on the radio, where someone could ostensibly record them, too? (kidding, that's a rhetorical)
  • the live Shins one is really curious...care to say more, matt? did subpop contact you, or someone else?

and on a semi-related note, i thought live music was fair game...are there 'rules' for posting those as well?
  • Grand Harmonium Records asked me to remove Steve Adey's - I See A Darkness track.

My one track which was a dedication I might add...
  • Rachel - you can link to a sample of the song on his website, don't know if that's any help...

I liked the Steve Adey track I heard, which is rare from a speculative MySpace request...
  • Dr Dentist asked me to remove all their tracks immediately....the reason...i was too old.....damn ageist professionals....
  • If it's not blatant it just seems so counter-productive. I never have--and never will--work with a label that won't allow me to send out at least one mp3. Most of my labels--Tomlab, Hometapes, Misra--they are ready to play in regards to tracks. I can't believe Vagrant would act like that. Have they forgotten where they came from?
  • Thanks Simone I thought about that...But Colin got to hear it and I purchased the album...It was up for awhile before I got the e-mail. :)
  • Re: Shins Live Songs

Someone from Sub Pop emailed me and said the band heard the live recordings and didn't feel they gave a good representation of what the songs were going to sound like in the studio.

    Curious, no?
  • Tomlab, Hometapes, Misra

these labels are so awesome but nobody buys their records. bums me out.
  • Arcade Fire and Okkervil River are both also anti bootlegs of new material. (But I don't know that they would go after you for it.)
  • thank God Radiohead isn't like that.
  • thank God Radiohead isn't like that.

    haha that's funny.
  • Dave yeah Hometapes label is awesome.

I´ve just received Feathers new release and I´m delighted with their music.
    Feathers (from Miami) myspace: http://www.myspace.com/feathersmiami
  • Hometapes is a really great label...they put out great records (like last year's Paul Duncan one), but they also just seem like really nice people, and are always sending me handwritten stuff that stands out a bit among the other stuff that comes my way...
  • What do you mean nobody buys their records, Dave? To what extent? While I admit that all should be as big as a Sub Pop in my world, I would say that Final Fantasy is selling quite well as is Casiotone for the Painfully Alone. Paul Duncan has sold very well and got featured in MOJO and SPIN Magazine. Misra is probably the most criminally overlooked label of our time, but I still think he does pretty well. It's just that Misra deserves to be as big as Merge.

But getting back to "remove this track," I can understand the Shins just not liking the way the live tracks sounded and wanting it to be removed. Having said that, for me, the live arena is fair game, ASCAP and BMI be damned, in my book. I have never understood and never will why bootlegging (for free trading) was illegal. If you're making money off the artist, sure, that's a problem. But for free exchange? I don't get it. The Dead got this and that's why they became huge. They encouraged it! Would that more bands did the same.

    seriously!

this is good news, then. i had no idea.
  • It all depends on how one defines good, you know? Sound Team is selling like crap for a major label band, but 10,000+ sales for an indie is amazing.
  • Secretly Canadian just asked me to remove a Frida Hyvonen track. I knew they were sort of touchy. But in the past 18 months I've posted lots of SC tracks and this is the first time they've asked me to take one down.

This has been a really, really sucky week for mp3 blogging.

  • The Shin of course. I would say nobody should post anything about the Shin until freburary 2007. If reader ask, for a review/or you have the urge to write a review, include information why there is no track and readers hould aware subpop is thretening HM/elbo.ws

Let SubPop sort out the angry mob of fans.
  • Amy - That's really too bad. Your Hyvonen post is superb and I intend(ed?) to link to it the next time I do a post on Gramophone. It's funny, too, because I wrote about Frida a few weeks ago and had no issues. (And I've had lots of trouble from Secretly Canadian in the past.) I no longer ever post advance stuff by their artists, but since the Hyvonen album is out in Europe I thought it would be good to go.

I disagree very strenuously with the tack they've taken. They're one of my favourite labels but they're truly shooting themselves in the foot with things like this. The Frida Hyvonen record really deserves to be heard and no one's really going to seek it out based on a 85-word review in Paste, I wouldn't think. (Descriptions of "Girls with piano" all tend to blur together.) Today's Pitchfork review was well-written, I thought.
  • Posted by: lovelybelleThanks Simone I thought about that...But Colin got to hear it and I purchased the album...It was up for awhile before I got the e-mail. :)

Wow, memories. I bought this album, and it's bee-yoo-ti-ful. Should probably put in the overlooked thread...
  • I'll make a public version of this thread (artist/song name/reason) only without the blog discussion. if it is okay with sean. (just so lurking blogger can get warning too)
  • I've opened this thread up from the private status, which may be a bit of a no-no etiquette-wise, but squashed is right and besides, I think that some of the non-bloggers would benefit from seeing our discussion.

If anyone's angry at having their comments "deprivatized" please get in touch with me so I can apologise.
  • a good friend of mine is going to be working in publicity at Secretly Canadian soon - I will ask her what the deal is with their policies and see if she has any pull in changing that?  And to be fair, Secretly Canadian is pretty good about providing an MP3 from all their releases for use... just not the ones y'all want, I guess.
  • and as with all SubPop releases, there'll be a sanctioned Shins track - just not three months early.
  • Posted by: chromewavesand to be fair, Secretly Canadian is pretty good about providing an MP3 from all their releases for use... just not the ones y'all want, I guess.

After all this time, do you still not understand why so many bloggers aren't attracted by this?

  • I know I could have posted the officially released track ("You Never Got Me Right"). It's a good song. But it isn't my favorite song on the record and isn't the one I wanted to post. We've always been content vs. promotionally driven and I'm not going to compromise what I post or write based on what record companies want or need. That said, I'm more than willing to remove a file when asked by the copyright holder. But as Sean suggested, I very much doubt these kinds of requests are in the best interest of artists. And Sean, thanks for your kind words. Very much appreciated.

  • I understand it just fine.  Just as I understand why the labels send out the C&D.
  • Posted by: chromewavesand as with all SubPop releases, there'll be a sanctioned Shins track - just not three months early.

I think there should be hardline approach against labels who threatened HM/elbo.ws. Just so they don't get cute pulling C&D everytime they feel like it. (as you can see, SubPop already doing a very novel kind of warning. Pre-C&D announcement)

There should be a clear signal to everybody out thee that HM/elbo.ws are fully protected by entire mp3 community, and touching them means automatic backlash full force.  (complete stop of publicity throughout the album cycle, including pre-release, on release review, and show review. There should be nothing)

This is a matter of organisational behavior to indicate the coherency of mp3 blogs. Even adhered by 80 out of 100 top blog plus 20-30% of medium blog. This will hold.

So, I for one would argue to strongly put everything behind elbo.ws and HM right after Anthony or Ryan announced they are hit by C&D of any sort.
  • Oh, and I should add this was not pre-release (I never post pre-release tracks). It came out in the states this Tuesday. Which is why I was a little surprised.
  • Posted by: chromewavesI understand it just fine.  Just as I understand why the labels send out the C&D.

    Everyone understands the rationale, Frank.

    We just think it's foolish.

  • anybody gonna write up the sweet new meat loaf album.

those 8 minute commercials are hot.
  • Sean, I know Arcade Fire (Merge) is bound to be a bit stricter about unauthoized mp3s coming up, in light of the Shins thing.

And to elaborate a bit on the comment way back by Inhouse Radio...the licensing for radio is that a station cannot "announce" a track before it it played, because then (theoritically) someone would be primed to record it. That is why radio play and downloads can't really be compared. Radio can, of course, post their playlist after the fact. (I just found this out from Tim at Pandora...you learn something new every day ;-)
  • Secretly Canadian is my favoritest label ever to request promos from.
  • I just visted their warehouse in Bloomington last week. Nice folks. Talk to Abe (who is the blogger liaison).
  • A little slip with Thom Yorke's solo album. But that was quite obvious.

(judging the mail it seemed they wanted to lock me in a dungeon and beat me to death)

    Hometapes is amazing :)
  • I've posted Frida's "Drive My Friend" oh, 4-5 times over the last year (including like, 2 weeks ago) since I got the import and SC never bugged me about it, but I guess I've been getting lucky. Unbelievable song.
  • side bar / OT:  you know what is kind of a shitter of a conundrum?  our stats sometimes indicate that the mp3 tracks we make available as promos to you guys are also our highest selling tracks on iTunes:

    CP - The Greatest (single)

    Ratatat - Wildcat

Yo La - Bean Bag Chair / Mr. Tough

    Film School - Pitfalls

now - if that doesn't fly in the face of mp3s negatively impacting sales, i dunno what does.  (/side bar)
  • Good songs sell themselves.

what bloggers promote are the winning tracks. People don't want to buy shitty filler. And people don't buy things that people don't know or understand. You can insist on using shitty promo tracks and sue everybody who posted everything else. But in the end public won't buy the album because people only get exposed to the shitty tracks and conclude the whole album is shitty.

    Counter example:

    1. Gnarls barkley. He only have ONE HIT. and that is the singularly most posted mp3. Nobody else cares about the rest. Guess which one sells the most?

    2. Arctic Monkey. His album is posted in entirety with his most sold/popular tracks posted the most.

    3. Jenny Lewis and of course cat power. (How come you always shut up when people brings cat power vs. the blog?)

Here is a fundamental question you seem unable to face:

If an artist throughout his career sells about 3000 albums, after the internet, which people download 15,000 times, his latest album sells 3400.  In your head do you consider lost of 15,000 albums sale or do you consider the 15,000K download helps increase 400 albums?

Is download preview/increasing potential buyer or actually a lost sale?

SHOW NUMBER. I DARE you. (so far I have to say your number never adds up.)

The catalog you hold doesn't last forever. People move on. You fail to ride the current hype and cash in, your lost. Nobody cares. There is always something coming.

Your job is internet marketing. Show you can market the idea backed by pure number. Quit the hype. Everybody here is in the business of hyping. We know something too.

    and stop whining please.

    fer gawd sake. ...
