I am thinking of starting a little mp3 blog, or at least an mp3blog category on my existing blog.
Some questions:
I would love a plug in that would delete mp3's from a directory after a certain amount of time to avoid bloat. Is there something like that out there for WordPress?
Is it frowned upon to make a whole album available if you are encouraging folks to go buy it?
Ok, that link was good. I will trim it down even more. I think 3 would be fine. And maybe it is a good rule (as in the link) that finding them already available by the band and hotlinking is the best way to go. We'll see.
Thanks, dont want to be a juice bag and now I know not to post a whole album.
To clarify, what motivated the frustration was the ad nauseum repetition, not the full-album thing. I am violently ambivalent toward full-album posting, as you'll find if you dig through some old threads on here.
when i first got hooked into the hype machine, i read a great article on the ethics of mp3 blogging, but now i can't find it. i think it was by mystery and misery, but i'm not sure, and i thought i found it on the hype machine somewhere. oh well. maybe if you google it you'll be able to find it.
I know many folks (read: Eric) are bored with the topic of full-album downloading and "guidelines," but if people come to this forum to ask about it, I don't think it's helpful to ridicule them.
I don't think we all need to speak with one voice as to a specific format that constitutes "mp3 blogging," but certainly we can agree on the full-album download thing, can't we?
to answer you're actual question (and the keep the thread on track). couldn't you just create a directory /mp3 and then in your FTP client....just sort by date and remove them once a week. 15 second job.
if you're looking for a real automated way, i'm sure if you posted to the wordpress forum, you'd get some hack to work something out or point you to the right place.
Every discussion group in history has a bunch of old-timers who are incredibly frustrated when new folks ask the same questions over and over. It never helps to get angry at the people asking because it's not them who will make the next infraction, it's some other new person.
And every time, the old-timer seems baffled and frustrated that this occurs. At some point you just have to recognize it's an inevitable function of these type of communities and hardly the end of the world if a "full album" topic shows up twice a month. Are there really 20 other essential topics which are being pushed off the main page?
Just say "We've had this discussion before. General consensus is that you should never post full albums. Here's a link you can check out for more info. In the future, try searching before you post." And that can be the end of the topic.
The fourth or fifth comment on this thread pointed me to a discussion on the full-album thing.
The thing is, that that was sort of just a side question. The main question was an automated way of keeping an mp3 folder on your site tidy and regularly cleaned. Which I did search around for to no avail. But as I was writing about that quesion, I thought I would pose this other question, not knowing what I was getting myself into.
Since it has become very apparent that full album postings is a sacrilege, I realize it wouldn't be too much trouble to clean out my folder myself.
It is fun to stir up the old crankwarts though, huh?
joesepi .. . Since it has become very apparent that full album postings is a sacrilege,"
It's the internet, nothing is sacrilage. But consider the effect. A lot of those old albums are of lower audio quality, which mp3 can reproduce remakably well. And that arguably, cut on its market value. Artist gotta make a living too right?
Try posting 2-3 tracks and combine it with different songs, writing, and art work. In term of attracting traffic that works as well.
Another thing, isn't it time to explore new music and artist instead of keep posting the old one that comes with load of big label bagages?
if you need help where to find those tracks, email me or open a thread..
Thanks Squashed. But I don't understand this comment:
Another thing, isn't it time to explore new music and artist instead of keep posting the old one that comes with load of big label bagages?
I posted a band called Les Savy Fav. I know they aren't the newest hottest band, but I wouldn't call them "the old ones with label [sic] baggage".
Maybe I missed something (on this thread and in the music world)...
no you are not missing anything. You just have to check them out yourself. New music. What I meant, is not only something personally new to someone, or a recently released album, but also within context of larger music scene.
The act of figuring out if a work contribute something utterly new is half the fun. (To me at least) The reason I am responding above, that's what is currently lacking. Find those people who creates new music (yes they are online)
Maybe I am deliberately vague, but your contribution is precisely in finding new idea how to search and present music.
to put it simply : "here is album I like and I am posting the whole thing for your enjoyment" is rather boring in term of mp3 blogging. I am sure there are few people downloading it (10-20K, if you stick with it) but overall it's not a novel approach to understanding, sharing and enjoying music.
Squashed:
Ok, I understand and appreciate your input. I will take that into consideration when posting future mp3posts (which will not be full albums).
I checked out the Bricolage and enjoyed it. I read some before reading your responding post and I think it cleared up your point -- making posts that add to a greater whole.
Thanks to everyone for responding. And thanks for letting me into the forum with limited abrasions.
Yeah there are tools to accelerate the process. last.fm, musicmap, various forums, blog searches, etc.. You can get connected with people and start talking about music pretty easy.
If you find new and usefull idea, post them here. (or in your blog)
I too found Mystery & Misery's mp3 etiquette guide very helpful when I first waded out into the Sea of Blog. If it has vanished, perhaps a short FAQ on the subject would indeed be useful for neophytes.
Welcome, joesepi. And fret not - we're not always a curmudgeonly lot!
