I want to share something with you guys (and girls).
Today, while checking the Hype Machine I ran into a track by Love, "Everybody's Gotta Live." The track caught my attention and I listened to it a few times, and while reading the corresponding post learned that Arthur Lee, the frontman of Love, has passed away on Aug 3rd.
Then I also noticed that in response to this, many other bloggers have also posted their favorite tracks by Love and wrote about Arthur Lee. I've been reading these for the past hour and along with the music it completely consumed me.
Now, I am sure most of you know Arthur Lee and have heard those Love songs many times over, but for me, this was a really eerie discovery experience. I wonder, how many other people haven't?
Finding music in such a context and then thoroughly enjoying the listening and the reading is why I do what I do with the Hype Machine. Moments (well, often hours) like these are worth everything to me and I want others to have this chance as well. I don't know of another place or community where it is possible to experience raw culture in this way, but music blogs.
I am listening to "A House is not a Motel" as I am writing this and simply knew I had to tell you guys. Sorry if this is a bit of a weird read.

Amen to that Anthony, I agree 1,000% and have had the same experience! IMHO Hype Machine & Elbo are awesome!
We in Memphis were very fortunate to have Arthur Lee as a part of our community the last several years. He is deeply missed already. I'm glad that things like Hype Machine exist to expose people to the music of largely unsung masters like Arthur so that even in passing he lives on.
it's kind of strange, but Arthur bravely opted for a fairly advanced and experimental treatment using stem cells, the same treatment that Susan Butcher (4-time iditarod winner) opted for. she died this morning.
maybe if the government would allow for more of this type of treatments (instead of detroying all the stem cells), these types of procedures would be less experimental and we'd have folks like Arthur around longer. (susan too...those dog races are pretty amazing)
I think the idea is that a lot of folks probably did not know who he really was but since hearing of his departure they have discovered his music from the Hype Machine.... So, it really is the other way around; The Hype Machine provided a promotional avenue to some of Lee's music - that is probably a better way to state it.
Eric, I was just writing about what happened to me and the odd discovery experience. Yes it happened on my website and it happened to be a good example of why I take the time to work on it.
