The latter half of my Tap Tap piece is one of my favourite bits of writing from the last while, if i do say so myself. I agree it's a good album and a testament to Ryan Catbirdseat's ears.
The thing with lots of the things in this thread, though, are that they're good albums that people should hear - but not necessarily things that I feel people must hear...
Overlooked.... hmmm... (maybe, just maybe it's the title, but) I would say Yes! Tinnitus! by Shooting At Unarmed Men. I love that album. Oh yeah, re: Peaches. It has got to be a good thing that more moms don't know Peaches. 'Cuz I got to admit I would be hella disturbed if I walked in on my mom singing along to "Two Guys (For Every Girl)". Ick.
Care to share some of your overlooked *must*-hears Sean? So far you've volunteered nothing and I'm sorta itching to take a shot at you at this point. (Am teasing.) Not that I would necessarily have heard any of them.
Hahaha - I'm trying not to shoot down anyone else too hard mostly because I'm not sure what great albums I feel have been overlooked... The past several years I've been hard-pressed to get as excited as I used to get about whole LPs. They tend to fade and pale, for the most part, or end up feeling really inconsistent. So "must-hear" records, universally speaking, regardless of taste? Eek. My favourites so far this year are by The Knife, Destroyer, Final Fantasy, Justin Timberlake, Grizzly Bear, Espers, Beirut, The Speakers, Shelby Sifers, Jason Molina (Let Me Go ^3)... And I guess a couple of those have been ignored, but they're not really the sort of thing I would expect to attract large-scale attention.
I really enjoy the Joanna Newsom, Damien Jurado, Shearwater, Flaming Lips and Fionn Regan records but jury's out on whether my affections are growing or fading. Similarly, who knows which of the records above will fall out of favour. At the beginning of the year I was crazy for the Two Gallants album but have since become really ambivalent.
Two of my favourite recordings this year are basically demos for albums that aren't due til next year. Which is sort of sad.
would be nice to see more people getting into: booka shade, t.i., phoenix, nathan fake, alex smoke, el perro del mar, brightblack morning light, and professor murder, plus some things p4k hasn't covered yet.
Yeah, that Professor Murder EP is loads of fun (they only have the EP, right?). Booka Shade's Mandarine Girl--great, great single! The Espers record... very pretty, but I don't know, it feels slight or just decorative or something.
no question, Sean - except for booka shade, and maybe t.i., they're more top 50 contenders than top 20-25...still, it's like they dropped off a cliff and were never heard from again. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places, though.
sure, it's spotty, and downright unlistenable at points (the macy gray duet) but i haven't heard another album this year that's so sickly compelling from just the first 30 sec. if there was any justice in this world, 'lift ya skirt' would've been a #1..
and though it's certainly gotten its share of attention, i think that new springsteen album's been ignored by a lot of folks who would probably like it..
BML is a things that blog can do a real good job. It's semi accoustic, slowcore/psych, completely different texture. Very specialized sound. It could replicate the freak folks sparks.
They could raise slowly but steadily accross the net, just keep simmering. But their blowhard record company killed the wave. So by now nobody remembers what they are about nor anybody cares digging them back up... not anytime soon. Everybody already moves on.
This is self-serving, but I really think you are all missing out on a Misra Record (so what else is new). Backward Masks by Summer Hymns is one of the best records of the year, but it's subtle, so I guess it's not going to hit everybody upside the head right away. For my money, I can't think of a record I've listened to as much this year. And, yes, I'm totally biased and proud of it.
Most overlooked records of the past three years? Okay's High Road and Low Road. Those are amazing records.
And these kind of "overlooked" posts irk me in the same way that "records you didn't hear last year" end of the year lists irk me.
is it a bit shilly in here? and yeah, lucas, you're jumping the gun a bit. new thread: overlooked albums of 2007. of montreal will be overlooked. hello autumn will be overlooked.
funny, that's exactly what i picture eric to look like . . . heh heh of course, i'm sure it has some deeper meaning and that we should all know who it really is!
Ok, this hasn't been overlooked yet, technically, as it will be released on Beggars Sept 28 and on Brassland Oct 24, but this is to perhaps prevent the possible overlooking of it.
DEVASTATIONS Coal One of my favourite albums of the year.
i'm a big fan of 'vessel states' by wilderness, and 'all at once' by young people. also, 'white bread black beer'? i know it's gotten some love from critics, but ...
jon manyjars ... How do you guys hear all this new stuff? Do any of you work at college radio stations or record stores?"
just get your blog to 3000 territory (with somewhat consistent content and able to pull people buying stuff), they'll start send you stuffs. If you ask me, it's way overated, I rather make somebody do the hard work of sorting out the crap from the real deal.
If all you want is listening to the edgiest and groundbreaking material before the crowd, just dig top underground podcast and sort through high quality blogs. You get more high quality music that way and skip the fads. Faster than having to listen to bunch of random unreleased CDs. Of course it won't make you the hippest, just knowing the better quality music around.
Spin Artist of the Day (today) is one of my favorite projects we are working on (the Awkward Stage) and they haven't gotten very much attention, but I think Shane is brilliant!
Other than sixeyes, the last time I checked (granted this was months ago), no one is giving any blog love to one of the best releases of the year: Golden Dogs - Big Eye Little Eye.
You know, I just checked that Spin link, and I think they have a 30 second limit or something (totally LAME, hey, I didn't set that one up)....get the whole thing at Good Hodgkins if it's still there. That song is impossible to get out of your head.
Shane is an occasional sideman/contributor with New Pornographers in that Vancouver scene, and he works in a crematorium on the side. ;-)
Squashed, I don't understand how getting sent free records is way overrated and I send to blogs that have 40 hits a day counts if I like the way they write. I honestly don't have enough copies here to service many blogs, so I only get to send out MP3 updates. If anyone here ever needs to get on my mailing list, just email me at lucas at teamclermont dot com. But, to be honest, you will never, ever get off.
On the Summer Hymns tip, I guess I was just feeling a little down that day and was jumping the gun, as Misra Records has a tendency to be highly praised and still overlooked. I really believe in their roster.
Can I jump in with an Okay High Road/Low Road as the two most overlooked records of 2005? I still listen to those things weekly.
Summer Hymns is on it's way out now (via our list)...it IS a great record Lucas, so I can understand your enthusiasm (also the point you make about Misra is, sadly, apt).
